REMINDER: Have Friends with a new HD DVD player? Educate them on Cables!

Several people at my office who bought HD-A2s from Wal-mart didn't have component or HDMI cables packed in the box. Reports from the field say that some units do have them, but apparently many do not.

EDUCATE YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY/COWORKERS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF USING THE RIGHT CABLES!!

We will see dissatisfied buddies if they plug up their HD-A2 with composite or S-video and get a disappointing picture.

They won't only be angry with the product, they'll be angry with you for selling them on this new technology.

Head off the massive returns that could potentially happen, and educate your friends on where to obtain reasonably priced, high quality cables, such as from our various forum sponsors above.

USE THIS HANDY CHART! (Thanks Sarcoptic)

VIDEO CONNECTIONS
Composite = 480i DVD, HDDVD <-----NOT RECOMMENDED - SDTV only
S-Video = 480i DVD, HDDVD <----- NOT RECOMMENDED - SDTV only
Component = up to 480p (EDTV) with DVD, up to 1080i with HDDVD
HDMI = up to 1080i DVD, up to 1080i HDDVD <-----BEST CONNECTION - HDTV and Upscaling

AUDIO CONNECTIONS
Red/white RCA plugs = 2 channel left/right audio <----- Good connection for TV speakers
Digital Optical cable = 5.1 channel surround, Dolby Digital or DTS 1.5mbps <-----Good connection for most Surround Sound systems
HDMI Cable to compatible A/V receiver = Dolby TrueHD or LPCM lossless <-----Best for surround sound systems with newer A/V receivers

IF YOU HAVE DVI INPUTS ON YOUR TV:
In some cases, you can use a DVI to HDMI cable to achieve an all digital signal path. Also, active converters are an alternative to passive cables.

**If you have a NON-HDCP DVI port, you will need to use component video.

(If anyone knows of RGB/YCbCr mismatch problems, or other CURRENT issues with HDMI to DVI converstion, post here and I'll change this note)

I think its more important to make this clear...

Video:
Composite = 480i DVD, 480i HDDVD
S-Video = 480i DVD, 480i HDDVD
Component = 480p DVD, 1080i HDDVD
HDMI = 1080i DVD, 1080i HDDVD

Audio:
2 channel = red/white rca plugs
5.1 DTS 1.5mbps = optical cable
Dolby TrueHD = hdmi cable

The number one question I think we will see is why doesn't the player upscale DVDs over anything but HDMI. Answer is its a requirement by the MPAA to not allow any sort of upscaling over analog connections. Final answer and it will never change with any firmware coming.

Good point, I'll put it in the main post.

Extremely good point! As I was answering customer questions while waiting in line for the A2 this morning (Walmart), I completely forgot to tell two older ladies about the importance of inexpensive component and HDMI cables. Dang it! My bad!!

dvi users such as myself can purchase hdmi to dvi cables or buy the hdmi to dvi adapter. works perfectly for me.

more importantly, be sure to educate others about updating the firmware!!!

I disagree - getting an HD picture is the most important first step! FW issues, though we hear about them a lot, are far less common than poor connections (especially with many relatively uneducated base buying HD DVD players today).

Yeah, it's ridiculous to shell out big bucks for cables, especially for ones that carry digital signals.

I got a 6' HDMI cable recently from monoprice.com for less than $8 shipped.

Monoprice.com ROCKS!!

I bought my A2 this morning as a gift and just tossed an HDMI cable in the box.

Yup. All the regular joes standing in line caught wind that I already had one of these, so I was quite popular. lol

Sent every single one of them to monoprice to get HDMI cables. Also told them to promptly throw away EVERY cable that was in the box. lol A few people mentioned that thier TV's best input was component (no hdmi and no DVI), I was a bit nervous that after them hearing these things would not upconvert over component that they'd walk away, but every single one said, well it'll look just as good as a regular DVD player right? I said yes and they said good enough, I'm buying this to play HD movies! woot!

Is an HDMI to DVI cable compatible w/ the DVI input on Samsung DLP's (specifically, the early model HLM's)?

Thanks,
Ron.

I am thankful that this post was not about the importance of using "high quality" HDMI cables. The whole point of the digital abstraction is that you can tolerate a lossy signal without actually having any loss in information. Monoprice/cablesondemand all the way.
