Widy City HT Construction Thread

I’ve been dreaming of my own HT for about 5 years now and did lot of reading on AVS. Time has come to implement what I have learnt.

Opportunity came knocking suddenly and I am now left with 3 months to complete the project or my wife will take the money away.:-)

I need all your help and advice on completing this DYI project. Please contribue !!

The HT will be mainly used for Movies and some sports.

Current Plan

• 2 Level Seating
• Bar in the back
• SMX screen
• Sony VPL projector (TBD)
• Speakers (Budget …around 3k for 7.1) – need your help picking for my HT size.
• Amp – thinking of Yamaha ( Budget 3k).

Framing Questions:
I had initially thought of doing DW+GG+DW but I have a bedroom right above my HT and want more sound proofing.

1. How much would a RSIC + HAT channel offer to sound proofing if I add it to my plan?
2. Can I do the Ceiling with clips and rest just the drywall or do I need to do the complete floating room concept?
3. What is the ideal placement (distance between them) of Clips? I want to make sure I buy enough clips.
4. Guestimate on how much would it cost for the Clips?

Sound Questions:
1. Can I put the SUBS in the stage or would they be better beside the Screen?
2. If I put the SUBS on the stage then do I need to decouple it with Screen Frame?
3. I would like to leave the media room in its place and that would mean running 50 ft cables for CRL speakers to be placed behind the acoustic screen. Would I loose quality if I do this?
4. What are some good audio cable options for this length?

I would do a RSIC clip ceiling, with double layer DW and GG. then use double layer and GG on the walls. Use stagger stud for any shared partition walls, regular for those facing the concrete foundation. Secure the top of the wall framing with RSIC 04 clips.

I would also think about an alternative layout where you put a sit at bar behind the last row of seats instead of facing the back wall. For extended seating comfort (Super bowl) you want to have a bar in front of you.

Go to the PAC international web site for pricing and installation guidelines (spacing).

I see from you picture that locale must require metal conduit for electrical wiring (Pain). Also you need to do some research on how to isolate the room from a HVAC perspective. If you just take off a supply from that metal main trunk running the length of the room it will act like a window open to the bedroom above.

Also note that you plan on boxing in an HVAC unit. Do your homework on ventalation requirements if it is gas/oil. If it doesn't have a direct outside air supply you need to have it open to adjacent spaces which will be a noise issue for the theater.

Speaker cables will not be a problem you just need to use a sufficient gauge In-wall rated copper wire. Don't let anyone tell you you need to spend more than about 50 cents a foot.

My room is this exact approach. From a performance perspective, I am still under construction, so the testing is limited. But so far, only sustained LFE at high levels is noticed in the room above is audible, even then it was not disturbing,

I would also caution that HVAC needs to be a factor in considering your isolation needs.

Yes it is all one piece. it took me 15,000 Ft of 0.75mm fiber optic to create it.

I have 3 shooting star lanes, 1 moon module and 1 twinkle module.

If I had to do all over again. I woudnt make it one piece. you may see grids with smaller pieces but the assembly will be easier

hmmm.. not really.. i am almost there.. some pics of the bar. I used fiber optic cables to illuminate the bar counter top. I used pour-on to seal them.

The finished product came out better than I expected. worth the effort

I looked every where for sound proofing doors. they are quite expensive. I finally went with a regular entry door. Solid Core.

The door is custom ordered from Menards. It works amazingly well to sound proof the room. I painted it to match the room and added decor.

I installed 54 pieces of 2W night stand lamps to create the Illuminated Cinema Identity Sign. I could have done back light, chasing lights like the pre fabricated expensive one's easily but I didnt want to make it too fancy. The lamp sockets are daisy chained to cosume single outlet.

There is still bit of work left to put the signange on top like in the picture.(Hollywood).

It's entirely up to you, but you'll no doubt get more traffic & feedback if you embed your photos directly into the thread rather than attach them. With 70 gabillion threads on AVS, lots of folks won't have the patience to open up so many photos individually.

Honestly I spent less then 2 seconds on the thread after seeing I was going to have to click links.
