A2 stuck at firmware upgrade 10/36

Thread Starter
I, like a lot of other people, got an A2 today from walmart. I am in the process of upgrading the firmware (was at 1.2) using the internet. Things seemed to start well, started downloading at 1/36. Got up to 10/36 fairly quickly and it's been stuck there flashing for three hours. The manual says not to turn it off in the middle of the upgrade. I know the upgrade is slow (I have read 30 to 40 minutes) but this is ridiculous. I have a 10mbps internet connection so that shouldn't be a problem. Not sure what to do, anybody have any ideas?

Me too. Mine has been at 10/36 for 1.5 hours. I am debating about shutting it down and updating it with the downloadable ISO

You can turn the player off and back on since the firmware did not complete the download and did not try to install the software. You should be ok.

I would also wait to update later on tonight you have to realize alot of these would sold today and the Tosh servers are getting hammered, that is why it nvere completed.

I'm currently sitting at 7/36 but have only been going about 20 minutes.

Give it around an hour if no progress just turn the player off and back on and wait until later tonight since the tosh servers are getting hammered.

DO NOT SHUT YOUR PLAYER DOWN unless you want to take the chance on bricking it. I'm sure everyone and their brother is downloading the firmware upgrade from Toshiba's servers right now. It will probably take longer than usual, maybe a lot longer. If you want to burn a CD-R, get it below.

most likely the server is getting pinged hard by new A2 owners downloding the latest FW vs. 2.5

The 1/36 to 36/36 download then subsequent 1/5 to 5/5 install has taken approx 35 min (historically speaking for the past 10 months).

For those who are comfortable with the process, you may prefer to download the firmware as a ZIP file to a PC and then burn the unzipped ISO as an image file to CD-ROM.

If this interests you -- there is a sticky above that discusses the procedure.

PS. As long as your internet update is still in the download phase, it should be safe to abort it. Just don't touch it even with a ten mile pole after the firmware install count begins.

Mine was stuck at "Downloading 6/36" for an hour, so I just powered it down. I'm going to go the Cd-r route.

It has not completed the software download so turning off the player will do it no harm, all 36 download steps have to downlaod in order for the firmware to start the install. If he turns it off all that will happen is that when he tries again it will start at step 1of download

Correct once it starts displaying step 1 of 5 that is when the software install starts and DO NOT TURN IT OFF.

I am sure you are anxious to use your new A2 but you and tens of thousands of other A2 owners are all trying to update your firmware at the same time.

I advise you to go sleep, leave the player on all night and check it in the morning.

You MIGHT be able to get away with turing the power off and starting again, but I would not risk it if I were you.

For those of you who have not updated yet, the CD burning method is probably the safest way to go until the load on the Toshiba server dies down.

This has happen to me when I first got my A2 I turned it off and burned the ISO, no problem what so ever.

I guess this is an indication of just how many players must have sold today!!

Any help for me?
I just plugged my in and it is stuck on the welcome screen. I tried to unplug it for a while and held down the power button, but nothing helps. All it will do it beep at me. I hope this one is not DOA because obviously I can't exchange it with WM being out of stock.

Just to update, I unplugged it and used the cd-rom method to update. Worked fine, the player is at 2.5 with the iso on the cd it only took about 10 minutes. Thanks for the help.

Did you wait long enough? At bootup it sits there for over 30 s.

Yea, for others, definately burn the iso to a cd if you can. You can download a free program to do it and, if using CD-RWs, you can do it as many times as necessary. I do it this way just because it's simple and goes a WHOLE lot quicker than through the ethernet port.

I did. This unit is for my parents, I have had my a2 for a few months and it works perfectly.
I guess this one is DOA. Dang it.

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds and let it reboot...hopefully that works...

It's nice to see members actually helping people here again. Lets keep it that way guys.

I bought the A2 this morning at Wal-Mart. Tonight I had some trouble getting the firmware through the ethernet port. I downloaded the iso file on my PC, wrote a CD using iso-burner. The updated from CD only took about 20 minutes. My one and only (for the moment) HD-DVD, Batman Begins, played beautifully.

Good luck to everyone else!

I got my A3 today. I started downloading the firmware about an hour ago (little longer actually). I now have "10004050" on the display and nothing on the TV itself. Did I torch this thing or what?

Does anyone know what this means? Is it (relatively) safe to try a hard reboot and use the iso?

I just bought the a2 and I am trying to download the latest firmware through the ethernet port, however it says download failed. please try again later. Is something wrong with my internet connection or is the site just getting hammered?

Sounds like Toshiba's servers are getting slammed, I also recommend what Rob said.

I'll also add a caution too, It'll sit on Step 5 of 5 for quite a bit and make you think it froze up, DO NOT SHUT IT OFF. eventually it will power off itself and be ready for use.

Update: It finally started downloading. I'm at 5/36. Crossing my fingers.

Try rebooting it. If you get past the welcome screen try burning the Iso I believe the Toshiba Servers are being overwhelmed.
