Thanks for any help on this.

who cares about Warner Bros anyway because so far it has been giving us many stupid Dolby Digital plus track instead of lossless. What a pain!

Currently Warner hasn't issued any statements regarding renewing their blu-ray contract which expired Oct 31 2007. At Warner's Q4 event Toshiba and HD-DVD were very visable and present at the event which had no blu-ray equipment or products at all represented...could be something in that.

I've been reading on the net that Warner was thinking of going Blu-Ray and dumping HDDVD.

That may change. If they did I would think it should certainly be posted here. The silence is deafening. Ask Penton Man over at Blu. He should know.

The Q4 Warner event 1 week ago was very public and blu-ray was nowhere to be seen. Very odd if Warner intended to go blu-ray exclusive when all visable signs were to the contrary. Warner's recent statement about being committed to blu-ray may only refer to their legal requirement to fullfil their obligation to blu-ray under the old contract. To date no contract extension with the BDA has been signed which the BDA would have reported.

I think all the new Kubricks are PCM, at least the three I purchased are (2001, Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut).

when the other option is no releases, we care. however if they go blu exclusive we should see a change on audio options.

I usually don't point out trolls but considering his post and his screen name I would say he, in all likelyhood, is the very definition. Go away.

Warner's recent and coming releases are including PCM (Kubricks, Harry Potter). T3 and Polar Express are the only ones I can recall that is a straight HD DVD port with only Dolby Digital. Superman Returns is being reissued with PCM and TrueHD on Blu-ray.

You can call me troll all you want, but no one has answer for me. Just so you know, I am format neutral, I just havent heard if they signed thier BD contract for the coming year.

No one's heard... but why would they have? The original news that it was coming up for renewal in the first place came about through the most unconventional of means; certainly not something you would expect to hear an actual news release about. Note that we've never heard or read of any other studio renewing their membership in one of these high-def organizations.

What we do know about Warner and Blu-ray though is that they re-committed to the format over last week, and they recently went in with the other key BD players in forming the royalties structure for Blu-ray. So... although there's no one that's going to be able to tell you whether they resigned or not, I'll posit that their actions don't reflect that of a company that didn't.

I wasn't sure if the "deadline" was true anways.

Just curious...has any studio issued a release that they have renewed such contracts/memberships in the past? Besides the initial "we've joind the [INSERT FORMAT] working group" releases, that is.

They have releases schedule for the 6th and 13th. If those ship, then I think we can reasonably say they are still neutral. That is until of course, until they aren't.
^dude, those would have been pressed while they still had a contract with the BDA, so I doubt that would be any indication of anything.

FYI, I just got an e-mail (Sat.) that The Avitator ordered from Warner Home Video has shipped and will probably arrive Monday or Tuesday.

i think the above poster was refering to the poster hddvds. your question was very legit and the answer is no one knows. but it does seem they are very committed to bd and they also seem no less committed to hd dvd than they did last week. they will at least wait out q4 before reasessing in my opinion. after that its anyone's guess exactly which format or which statistics they are most interested in.

It looks great...watched it yesterday. You will enjoy it.

Isn't it like $40K or something to renew? That's a drop in the bucket compared with the sales they stand to make 4th quarter 2007. Even if they were secretly planning on dumping Blu-ray next year WB would still ante up now.

Now, will they renew their HD-DVD or Blu-Ray after Q4, nobody really knows.

Is there a source for this? Just so I know where to look since this seems to get asked/referenced about 50 million times a day around here.

What exactly does renewing allow then to do? Get a newsletter? Obviosly they are allowed to still sell software even though the license is expired. There are titles shipping as we speak.

Must they renew before they encode/announce/release any titles not yet announced or something? I am curious as to why this is such a big deal since it is obviously not stoppoing new stuff like Aviator and Harry Potter from shipping on Blu-Ray.

At this point, nobody knows, and I doubt they will issue any press release about it. The only reason it is even being talked about is because of HD-DVD zealots who took that it was expiring and ran with it.

As if the Blu ray zealots wouldn't crow about it if Warner re-upped with the BDA. What's good for the goose...
