The Worst Remake Thread

Here are my choices....if you don't see one you dislike listed then please put it in the thread and discuss why you didn't like it.

My personal hate is the remake of Psycho which was completely pointless and had absolutely nothing original to add to the storyline.....the casting was all wrong too.

I also thought the remake of Cape Fear wasn't very good and Robert Mitchum in the original was able to play a menacing character with just a look and a swagger and a few lines of dialogue but with DeNiro it took lot's of tattoo's and an overblown music score....easily Scorsese's worst ever movie.

As for The Fog....not a patch on the original.....interesting first half but it fails to deliver and not just because of the PG-13 rating.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. Sacrilegious. Could it have been watered down and bastardized more? Except for this movie, we've been fairly lucky with the remakes of the late 60's and 70's horror movies. eg. Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, The Hills Have Eyes (I and II).

And even though I thought Johnny Depp made a incredible Willy Wonka, the rest of the movie left me flat. Especially the Oompa Loompa replacement and songs.

Well you already know i loved The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

Anyone seen The Invasion yet ? How does that compare to other version's of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers ?

They released it without previews in the UK which is usually a bad sign.

There is no comparision, it doesn't come close to the '56 or the '78 versions! IMHO it was a complete waste of time.

What about them 90s version?

This should have been a multiple choice poll.

I'd like to vote for "Frank Herbert's Dune", that Sci-Fi Channel atrocity with a budget of approximately $12.75, spent entirely on silly hats.

Yep, even the '93 'Body Snatchers' was better.

Just for the record, those songs in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" were by Roald Dahl, so they were not so much "replacements" as were the ones in the Wilder Wonka.

I voted for "Psycho." GVS is a talented director, but his shot-for-shot remake was akin to ... well, akin to the director doing what "Master [Norman] Bates" did more audibly in the remake.

Yeah, I wasn't paying much attention to the movie itself anyway.

Unfortunately i have never seen it yet thus decided to list only movies i have seen which might be considered worst remakes.

I'm sure it probably deserves to be on the list though but would feel bad putting it there just in case it's any good.

There was a really awful remake of Double Indemnity from 1973. It was a TV movie. If you rent the Double Indemnity DVD it's on the bonus disc. Really awful, with a cast of no name actors who toss their lines out like they're still in rehearsal and reading their lines straight from the script. Worst remake . . . ever.

Seeing that Pink Panther is currently leading for Worst Remake, I have to wonder if people are actually comparing the remake to the original Pink Panther movie, or if they have one or more of the sequels to it in mind.

I rewatched the original not long ago, and its really not a very good movie at all. Though the Steve Martin remake doesn't capture the magic of the series as a whole, when compared to the first Pink Panther movie, it's much better.

I actually think "Cape Fear," "The Birdcage," and "Red Dragon" are good movies. I would even put "Cape Fear" on a best remake list.

On this list though, "The Fog" is the worst. Although it was hard to vote against "The Pink Panther."

I think it is more Steve Martin doing a bad impersonation of Peter Sellers that tips the scale.

I liked both versions of Cape Fear, though I have to admit I saw the Scorcese remake first, then the original version several years later, so that may have affected my judgment.

going old school....High Society is just terrible compared to "Philadelphia Story." I LIKE Sinatra, but this is just awful. It's obvious that everyone in it is "acting!"

And the re-make of Flubber. I'll take Fred McMuarry any day over Robin Williams in that role. Flubber comes to life...sheesh.

Both Pink Panther and Psycho are strong contenders for the worst remake. PP was an insult to the memory of Peter Sellers, and caused me to lose what respect I had for Steve Martin.
Remaking The King and I with Jodi Foster and Chow Yun Fat in place of Audrey Hepburn and Yul Brenner was also pretty hideous.

Don't you mean Deborah Kerr.....I thought it was ok because they didn't remake it as a musical.

No. Anna and the King, starring Jodi Foster.

Have to add The Shining remake. Horrible movie, although the ending was more in line with the book. I also though "The Hills Have Eyes" remakes were terrible when compared to the original. Also, can I do a pre-emptive strike for He-man?

Yah i was talking about the original King and I....starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr....Audrey was in My Fair Lady.

Did anyone see the 2000 remake with Will Skerritt of High Noon? I couldn't bear to watch. I can't imagine anyone giving that project the go-ahead.

I wasn't aware of that one. This is a case where ignorance is bliss. The original Shining contained Jack Nicolson's career-defining performance, how is anybody supposed to compare with that?

What was the English version of La Femme Nikita called? Same director, but pure dreck compared to the original.

Point Of No Return ( or change of title to The Assassin in the UK )

I quite liked it although it was inferior to the original.....Bridget Fonda was quite good in it but Harvey Keitel couldn't hold a candle to Jean Reno who was very menacing in the original.

John Badham directed the remake and Gabriel Byrne was pretty good in it.....Luc Besson was the director of La Femme Nikita....The original is just grittier and has a better music score and better acting but i didn't think it was a bad remake....just not a great one.

Wow, I looked it up and you were right. Talk about a powerful false memory: I had a very clear picture in my head of Audrey as Anna!
(Note: According to the same website, that movie was banned in Thailand!)

Wish you had added The Wicker man.
Nothing on the list is as bad as this remake was. Nothing.

PS
Just saw why you did not add it. Too bad it was so bad it could have won hands down.
