Why does it take 10+ minutes for a HD-DVD to start playing

I am using the Xbox 360 add on. Every time I put a new HD-DVD in to play, it takes sometimes over 10 minutes for the movie to start. It has to be doing something from the Internet because when I unplug the 360 from the Internet it loads instantly. Why are these movies taking so long to load up stuff from the Internet? I put in Evan Almighty and just had a black screen for over 10 minutes, couldn't get it to load, had to disconnect from the Internet. I put in numerous other HD-DVD's and it takes forever. Transformers at least gave me the loading screen that it was doing something but it also sat there for about 13 minutes. Its definitely not my internet connection, tests show I get about 18 mbs. What in the world is it doing that takes so long?

Evan and Transformers (and Knocked up for the record) both have online features that require a cookie. When your not connected, it doesn't even bother looking for it. When you are connected it should only take 10 minutes the first time you load the title, after that it should be faster. You can also go to the system blade and set your player to never accept cookies, I believe that will stop it. If your not using any of the online features it shouldn't be an issue.

I switched to an A2 over the weekend (suprise suprise) but I don't have it hooked up to the internet, I haven't had any issues with Transformers so far.

It is possible that the disc has new features that need an update to the Xbox to play and use properly, so it goes to the web to get the update and apply it before playing the disc.

Whenever HDM takes a few minutes to load there is a message on the screen telling me what's going on. It's strange you have a blank screen. For example, I get messages that read cookies or web content.

I have the 360 AO as well and the only movie that didn't load quickly was Transformers because it had web enabled content.

My equipment pales in comparison to many around here but I must say Transformers was, by far, the best looking movie I have seen to date.

Can you give us a list of the "numerous other HD-DVD's" that also take forever to load? To my knowledge, only the newer web-enabled ones need to do the download and it's a small subset of the roughly 350 titles out there. I'm not saying this isn't happening to you, I'm just trying to get more info on which titles. If your list includes titles that other people haven't had a problem with then it might be another issue.

I have the Xbox 360 add on as well, and I've seen the slow initial load times on a small number of titles in my collection. Whenever it is downloading something there's usually a screen indicating that it's loading (there isn't a blank screen). The only titles that I can think of off the top of my head are:
- Heroes
- Transformers
- Evan Almighty
- Knocked Up

William, if you unplug your 360 from live when you watch movies, it should not update...A little hassle to deal with, but it should fix the problem.

Again - even easier than that, just disable cookies in the system blade.

It doesn't take that long at my house.

Like said it should just the first time, id just unplug the xbox from the network and load the update later.

I have the 360 add-on aswell, and mine only took like 2 minutes on the 2nd disc of heroes. Never any longer than 30 seconds on any other films. <<<<Knocks on wood>>>>

Bunch of BS.. it doesn't take 10 min. I downloaded the cookie in less than 1 minute. If you don't have adequate bandwidth (dial-up for example), you shouldn't try to use the online extras.

Transformers did take WAY TO LONG to do its thing the first time I played it in my x360AO..not sure if it was 10 mions, but it was way longer than "less than a minute".

I did not have a blank screen though..it said it was downloading(6Mbits DSL)

FWIW, download on my Xbox with Wi-Fi took a lot longer than my Xbox connected with Ethernet (my cable modem speed at the Wi-Fi house is faster than at the Ethernet house, too). My guess is Wi-Fi had interference and a lot of retries.

It's very possible there will be small differences in download times, but if it takes him 10 minutes than something is wrong with his setup. I use RR - it's very fast where I am because I am the only person on the line, so it's definitely an internet speed issue. Why would it be anything else?

I have 18mbs download speed and 6 mbs upload speed, tested and verified via 3rd-party sites. No problems with uploads/downloads. Play on-line games a LOT, no lag issues, no problems, runs awesome.

The only title that gave me the blank screen was Evan Almighty, it was just black. The other titles give me a status bar or says loading, etc.

I timed Transformers, it was 11 minutes. I timed Knocked up, it was 13 minutes. I stopped Knocked up during its process and went to the computer and did an analysis/test of the connection/bandwidth. I hit 18.6 mbs download speed. Went back and fired up the DVD, and 13 minutes later the film started.

If its downloading a cookie, how can it take this long to download a simple quicky. I can download a fully playable game demo (over 1 gig in size) to the 360 in minutes. Is it the studios are hit hard (this happened on launch day for Transformers and Knocked up) so perhaps thousands of people are hitting thier servers to get the updates???

I've had this happen with Heroes DVD Box Set, Children of Men, Knocked Up, Transformers, and Evan Almighty. To me, that is "numerous" and shows a trend of U-control movies. Just wish I knew what it really was doing, if it needs an update to the movie, then cool, I want it to so I don't want to unplug it. I might disable the cookie thing then and just enable it when I want to do U-control. If I disable the cookies will it still do udpates to the movies?

I've got a 20mb cable connection and Transformers took about 10 minutes to run the first time, so it's not a bunch of BS. Maybe because it was the release day?

Could the problem possibly be your network speed setting on your player? I've only used Transformers and It only took about two minutes with a 1Mbps cable setting, also I use a 1Gbps network throughout the house.

Thanks, I hate when people just call BS and have no clue.

I think it might be a release day thing, because some now say it only takes a few minutes.

My 360 add-on is 4-5x slower (or more) in HD DVD network access than the D2 that's on the same network connection.

My guess is that the D2 can contact the movie company servers directly, while the 360 has to redirect through Xbox Live, which somehow slows things down. A lot.

Is your Xbox wireless or wired to the network?

I use the add-on in an HTPC and I click "cancel" for the web update and from disc entry to title screen it is 12 seconds.

Yeah, things were pretty slow on release day and the day after but they seem to have picked up substantially---the Sector 7 downloads, which were fairly small, took forever but now they come fast. So it may just have overwhelmed the server or something. I thought it had completely locked up on release date but it did eventually download things.

The 360 and D2 are both on the same wireless connection. Only one device at a time uses the connection (only have one powered on at any given time.)
