"IF" the filter wasn't first fortified(see above) and "IF" the dust build up was so bad as to be distracting on dark scenes then I would still choose one of the above options (or in one case the EE service machine is used until the repair is made) rather than possibly invalidating the remaining warranty by "giving it a shot, cleaning" which may cause doing serious damage to these sensitive components even using jewelers tools needed, IMHO...

Shipping & Insurance both ways maybe $60 within CONUS anyways...

Oh, that's right Bouda78 is in Syria, but still...

Don't worry about using the pleated one if that's all you can get. Just cut it out of the cardboard surround. It folds out flat and is the same material anyway. One thing though, the rating on this is 1085 which is more restrictive than the air conditioner filter which is about 700. It may restrict air flow too much. I'd get one in the 700 range. Filtrete also makes high flow filters in the 200-600 range but felt there were too thin when I looked at them.

Unless you have a Class 10,000 or better clean room, you might introduce more dust into the PJ than you remove. Then at the end, he cleaned a module w/ canned air above the panels that he'd just cleaned. Maybe this is all OK but I'll wait 'til mine's out of warranty before I try it.

Moreover, unless they use some very specific canned air, it may be more harmful than anything.

Canned air contains oil and sometimes particles, and I would think that grease over an lcd panel or particles flying around delicate components isn't what one wants...

Got my projector tonight. Very pleased so far.

Question, when I watch DVDs that are 2.35:1, the projector modifies the screen to get rid of the upper and lower black bars resulting in a slightly unfocused modified image. What setting keeps it original? It starts correct but then snaps to full screen. The aspect ratio button doesn't do it.
Thx

one thing i noticed about the air filter, mainly, its housing. look where the bottom of said housing touches, or better put, doesn't touch, the pj. dust can be sucked "around" the filter. i am going to put something to fill in this space.
oh. and as far as inside cleaning :

if they are so flagle. how to they survive shipping ? the thing i would be afraid/aware of, would be "booby traps". as in, they designed it in such a way that, if someone who didn't know, would damage something.

and. what about dust getting into the machine through its out ducts.

I updated the firmware. I had a scare while doing it but it is all good now. I installed it on the shelf and I immediately noticed a major problem. The lens shift does not move to the left at all past center. It moves up, down and to the right but it won't move left. If I move it right then I can move it back to the left but not past the center. I have the projector on a shelf that is almost centered with the screen. I don't know whats wrong but something must be. Am I missing something or does this sound like a defective unit?
put it all the way left. then go up & down = ?

mine makes a some clicking sounds when i adjust it.

I've tried everything but it won't move left of center at all.
maybe it wasn't centered in the first place ???
I don't understand what you mean by that?

I have the projector mounted on a shelf on the back wall that is almost perfectly centered, top to bottom and left to right, with the middle of the screen. The lens shift goes to the right, up and down. It does not move left at all past, what I am guessing, is the center of the lens shift range.

Something is definately wrong with it. I will contact Viewsonic tomorrow morning. I'm sure that will be fun.

Gotcha. Thank you for your help.

It doesn't seem like that because it has about the expected amount of range to the right. It doesn't seem excessive that it is. It gets stuck once it is centered and won't go further to left. It doesn't make any noises or anything. Nothing happens. I tried it using the controls on the projector itself as well as the remote. As soon as it hits the center it just stops moving. It is receiving the commands to move left because the lens shift screen stays on as long as I keep pushing the left arrow.

Are you absolutely positive you're not using all your left/right shift range. I was actually doing the same thing you were until I realized there isn't much horizontal shift. It's about 10% each side. Not saying you don't know what you're doing, just look in the manual and see exactly how much shift there is and make sure you're not getting all of it before calling Viewsonic.

go to page 23, can you choose anamorphic 1 or 2(I cant remember when they're grayed out)? You may have the setting on one of these options, if so change it to normal. I dont know what else to suggest, other than make sure your source is outputting the correct ratio
post #1816 of 8980
I wish there was a way to post videos here. I could show you exactly what I am talking about.

Something is wrong with the unit I received. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. This is my third projector. I have more than a general understanding about them. It isn't a wrong setting or operator error. There is no lens shift to the left of center what so ever. I understand the anamorphic settings. Those have no impact on this problem.

Again, it moves up, down and to the right the amount I expect it to. It will not move left past center at all. It should move the equal amount in each direction. I have the projector pointed properly. I am not off by much if at all. I could find the exact center of the lense shift range by measuring how far right it goes and how far left. Unfortunately it doesn't go left at all past center. There is something wrong with it. I wish there wasn't but there is. Now I have to deal with gettng this resolved. I should have waited for the Epson 8100. Both Epsons I've owned worked perfectly out of the box.

Also, I want to mention that the settings Bouda listed look way off to me. I only have one hour on mine so that could change but it doesn't look good at all at those settings. The dark mode appears to have way too much red and the bright mode has way too much blue. It also has a ton of video noise and overly saturated colors at those settings. As of right now I am not impressed at all with this projector.

Here are some screen shots I've taken now that the projector has been set up with some basic calibrations for a while. My camera does seem to have a hard time capturing the really dark scenes, the Dave Matthews concert looks MUCH better in person.

timfrommass congrats and great pics.

as for my dust problem its was solved thanx GOD , i opened the pj by my self with this steps and i didnt notice any sealed thing that can cause avoiding warranty. also i dont advice any one to try this unless he is so far away from the service ( at the other part of the earth like me.

first open the cover( strip his clouthes off ):

then turn it upside down ( to get another position and enter ur screw driver and gently open it because it still virgin ( there are 10 screws):

dont forget ones at the back

remove the front cover so youll see the under wear :

also remove the screws and youll see the real beauty :
dont forget to unpluge those strips:

take very good look at each part , isuggest to take pics to not forget each wire pluge:

unpluge those carefully:

under the left side of the board there is two wires so pull it slowly and unpluge them :

then remove the board so you've reach the lcd panels:

take out the plastic that holds this very silly filter that causes dust inaddition to his stronger brother the outside one that need clean every 50 hours:

with air compressor ofcourse add to it water filter blow between those holes then with a carpet vaccum cleaner also clean between holes ( do not use any dry clean substance or liquid cleaner just air cleaning :

after that reinstall everythin in order and turn on the the pj if didnt send it for service just kidding, and enjoy dust free bolbs.

advice to all cover ur pj with cover that comes with it after every day use ofcourse after cooling out just to ensure nothing happen to it i know its a bit over protection but just for ur own long term service free use.

best luck too all.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

I wouldn't have done it myself, but that satisfies my curiosity

Thanks

bouda78, very ballsy, but very cool nonetheless. I definitely wouldn't try it during the warranty period, but if I ever get severe dust blobs after the warranty period expires, I'd certainly consider it. It actually looks pretty straightforward.

I think the better approach though is to do what many have already started doing, look to better aftermarket filtration. The 3M Home Depot filter seems to be a great start.

timfrommass, I'm still working on putting some screenshots together myself. My PS3 Slim should be in today, so I'll finally have a full 1080p source to work with. I was able to get some good captures off cable and sd dvd (the Reon certainly does an amazing job), but 1080p is where it's at for the best captures. The only way to really capture accurate dark scenes as intended is to shoot in manual mode. Your captures are good, but a bit overexposed. I'm guessing you were shooting aperature priority?

Hello gents,

What's the word on availability for these babies. I know the supply is starting to dry up but are there any vendors that still have a decent supply at a decent price. I want to get one now but I have to wait since I'm in the middle of a home purchase and I'm stuck for another 2 weeks. I hope I haven't missed the boat on this one.

Thanks

Tiger Direct still has them in stock at $1299. Not sure if you can still get the Bing cashback thing with them or not. A couple of people have said they don't like TD but I got mine from them and it went smooth as silk. Ordered from them 5 or 6 times over the years, never had an issue. YMMV.

Thank You LandShark, that gives me some hope that they won't run out before I can get one. I've been lucky with TD as well.

timfrommass, I can see vertical banding in your screen shots. Are those really there or are they caused by your camera?
I talked to a Viewsonic rep online about my lens shift problem. Basically all she could tell me was to do a "master reset" and try again. I will do that when I get home but I HIGHLY doubt that will fix the problem.

I believe it is a mechanical problem with the lens itself. Not a software related problem. I guess I have to go through the motions first though. I am going to contact TD to see what the return procedure is just so I know what to expect.

Question on standard DVD with hdmi connection. My dvd player will upconvert to 720p and I did this with my previous projector. What is the best method with this projector? My previous projector was 720p, so it could use the signal as is but not the Viewsonic. Should I send the 480p standard signal to the projector?
Thx

Ideally you want to send 480i for sd dvds. The Pro8100 has the HQV chip which will do a much better job scaling than almost any dvd player's chip. Not all dvd players will output 480i over HDMI. If yours won't then try each resolution and see what looks best to you.

Sorry, but I don't think that you do. The only abnormalities are in the two shots of the sky in the first Kung Fu Panda shots. If you look at those they are not even vertical... even so that must have been caused by the camera as they weren't present on the screen.

If you are actually seeing vertical banding, please point it out because I surely don't

I contacted TD. They gave me a RA number and emailed me a return shipping label. Hopefully I can get this problem resolved without having to return it but at least I am all set if I have to.
