Anyone using an ND filter on their Pro8100 with a DaLite High Power screen ?

P. Centrals calculator shows 26fl for my application, which is at 75% bulb life brightness ; I'm wondering if at 100% & new what fl this would translate to and if that might necessitate a filter ???

Sitting @ 12' , PJ @ 15.5' , w/ 100" HP screen ...

Any shared thoughts on the usage of filters would be appreciated ...

TIA

I'm at 12' feet, PJ@13.5', with 92" about .8 gain. I run at normal and find the brightness to be perfect, you're high gain screen may be too bright...hard to day but I'd think you'd be okay on eco mode. What's the gain on the HP?

Hi again,

The HP gain is 2.8 retroreflective optimum , dependent upon actual setup = I should see 2.1 gain and would be using eco mode which the calculator shows to be 26fl...

The question would be, when new I might want and need to attach a ND filter to the 8100s lens to effectively target this 26fl and remove it at say, 75% bulb life brightness ...

Some projectors are more or less adaptable to filters, is my understanding ?

Thoughts / experiences, please advise~

I will probably use the old trial and error method, but I would appreciate some 101 direction(s)...

Thanks in advance ~

I spent a few hours tonight investigating the noise issue. Ran Shooter, The Watchmen (Blu-ray) and Dracula, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon(Standard def)

I also compared it to my Epson 720, same room, same screen.

With PCS turned on, the noise was significant over my Epson. With PCS off, the image from the Viewsonic on normal and Epson on Livingroom mode(very highly tweaked I might add) were pretty much identical(Except for the deeper blacks and truer color tones on the Viewsonic). Color saturation was almost identical. Note this is using the user setting on the Viewsonic for color and other settings. I had LTI and CTI turned off, sharpness at 50. Also HQV detail enhancement at 2. I have been using the basic RGB color adjustments contrast, brightness, etc.. posted here by bouda78

The auto PCS is basically doing three things. Applying increased saturation to each color, tweaking the gamma curve, and applying edge enhancement. Basically, the PCS edge enhancement is causing most of the issue. On Auto, I believe it to be about at 2. Going into PCS user, I was able to increase saturation, played with the gamma curve, and left edge enhancement at 0. This gave me the benefits of the PCS without the increase in noise. I can't recall my exact settings and didn't save them, but will get into it more when I get it tweaked to my liking and post them here.

So, in general ,the noise seems to be standard for LCD's with my settings above without PCS turned on..of course the higher lumen output on normal accentuates it as well. My Epson puts out only 380 lumens in Theatre Black mode and the noise is very hard to see. I'm guessing this pj is putting out close to 800 lumens on normal in user mode.

Hope this helps a few people out, this really is an excellent pj, it just takes a lot of tweaking to get it the way YOU want it.

Well right off the Viewsonic has a massive lens, you're looking at 3.5" across. That's big $$$. The lens is inset as well so it's a tight fit, there is less than 1/2 inch to grab onto. The glass itself is only 2.5 inches, so maybe you could tape it on the front somehow?

Ahh, I see, $$$ and/or duct tape ...

I may just as well put those $$$ into a 120 HP screen to tame the fl and rather than a fixed shelf , go with an adjustable length mount to tame the actual gain...

Thanx for sorting out some thinking here, guy!

Here's an update on my situation:

One of the steps I took in trying to resolve this nightmare AVR<->PJ issue was to take my Pioneer AVR 1019AH back to Best Buy and while there I found out they had the VSX-23TXH (Elite) for 100 off AND I was able to use my 12% Best Buy Rewards certificate so I got it for about 200 off the current retail price.

Anyway, my problem persists if you can believe it or not.
This Elite AVR is simply sweet, especially with the 2 HDMI outs I can definitely use (regular every day viewing on an LCD HDTV and all the good stuff on the projector (once I get it working)).

So basically, now with this extra HDMI out I was able to try the following:
AVR = Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH
PJ = Viewsonic Pro8100
HDTV = LG42LB5D (42" LCD)

PS3 connected to HDMI "BD" input on AVR.
HTPC connected to HDMI "1" input on PJ.
HDMI "1" output from AVR connected to HDTV HDMI "1".
HDMI "2" output from AVR connected to PJ HDMI "2".

With AVR set to output from both HDMI outputs at once.
HDTV set to HMDI "1".
PJ set to HDMI "2".
PS3 is source.
Image appears on HDTV, nothing on PJ.

Now I switch PJ over to HDMI "1" (HTPC).
Voila, picture appears.

I tried different cables (all which I know work 100% - tested).
I tried manually forcing the outputs from the AVR instead if just saying "both at once".
I tried different input/output combinations.

So in summary:
Still no damn working AVR<->PJ connection.
Any Source -> AVR -> HDTV *works fine*
Any Source -> AVR -> PJ *no video*
Any Source -> PJ *works fine*

Called Pioneer and Viewsonic Tech support on friday.
Pioneer was closed, their voice system announced "holiday" so it seems they decided to have a 4-day weekend, great.
Viewsonic tech support is 24/7 except designated holidays but they have no idea what could be going on, my case has been 'escalated'.

If by Wednesday next week Viewsonic and Pioneer can't tell me what's going on then I can only conclude I have a funky projector because although it works direct with sources and not with my AVR I'm on AVR#2 and I tested its outputs and I know they work.

Zasy99 - Good luck with getting it resolved. Sounds like another frustrating HDCP handshaking issue. HDCP has created alot of issues
post #399 of 8980
zasy99 i think there is something wrong between your ps3 colour space and pj colour space, try to set your pj to auto color space and choose ps3 to rgb and then try ycpr, or set both pj and ps3 to rgb ,then set both to ycpr, because the elite vsx-23 and 1019
support 48-deep color , so the ps3 but the pj supprt only 32-deep colour , so when you set your ps3 to auto and connected to the avr the ps3 choses the best mode 48-deep colour and recevier is compatibale with it but the pj is not . or there is something wrong with your pj try to updated to the latest firmware 2.51 and if you done it reupdated again may be something wrong with the 1st one.

You're looking at $120 for a Hoya 95mm filter, not what I would be spending money on for sure. Just try it with your screen, I think you'll be okay in eco mode. A review online said they measured 350 lumens in the least bright setting, that's not very much.

On the bright side, you've got a good setup for TV watching with ambient light

Does anyone know the access code to get into the Service Menu?

I'm wondering what settings are available, especially considering this is/was targeted at Custom Installations.....maybe an installer program via windows?

So, I am going to need to buy a home audio set up with a receiver and I am probably going to go with an inexpensive Onkyo. The only reason I need to do this is because my current surround sound system has no HDMI and I am going to need that to pass audio through for the projector correct? Any one think I would have handshake HDCP issues with this receiver? http://www.abt.com/product/40347/Onkyo-HTS3200.html

Thanks.

Ok, thanks. That is a nice system as well and if it should work (hopefully) with this projector I may go with it as I have a gift card to this site that I need to use.

sorry ZachHD the onkyo i pick 7.1 but dosent support dts-hd try others that i posted those all support the HD league

Ok thanks .

Some of those don't have receivers? Don't I need one to get audio/video to the projector?

That is one thing I am unsure of, would it go Bluray player to projector, Dish Receiver to projector, or both to a receiver then 1 out to the projector.

I get what you're saying but then why does the PS3 -> PJ direct connection bypassing the AVR without any change to settings work fine?

Also, HTPC or Xbox360 -> PJ works fine, as soon as I route them through the AVR though the problem happens, no video.

I tried all various PS3 video modes when connected direct from PS3 to PJ, they all worked, none worked thru the AVR with the AVR set to dual HDMI out so at least I could see what I was doing on my TV at the time.

That's it, PJ is going back, just ain't compatible and/or something wrong with it.

Hi, where does the image land when you just put it on the table, without lens shift? trying to determine how high I can mount this or need to be upside down (ceiling mount)

IanS -- As muzz said, I have the Mitsubishi HC5500, and I plan on keeping it for at least another year or two. From what I've read on this thread, the Viewsonic Pro8100 is a very good PJ. This surprised me, because past Viewsonic PJs (OEM-ed from other Mfg.) haven't been that good. They apparently found a good source - way to go Viewsonic ).

finthen -- Although the Pro8100 is a very bright PJ (especially for a H-P screen), you should be able to calibrate it for much lower lumen output. First, use the Low Lamp (eco) mode, that will cut the output by around 20% to 25%. You said that the PJC calculator showed 26ft-L. That is not too bright, and you should be able to dial it down (see below).

Second, get a calibration disc, if you haven't already. If you have a Blu-Ray player, the AVS HD 709 is recommended (and it's free): http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496. All of the details, and the download link, are in the first post (as well as the instructions for using it and for burning your own DVD - it writes a BD format to a standard DVD-R disc). You can decrease the Contrast control (adjusts the White level), so that the image will not be too bright on your screen.

EDIT: If you want to buy a calibration disc (Blu-Ray), I would recommend the Spears & Munsil disc: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1131344. It's the best of the commercially available ones.

Try that first, before you spend $100+ on an ND2 filter (= 1 f-stop = 50% cut in brightness). I also have a High-Power screen and have used ND2 filters on two of the PJs I've owned. If you decide to get an ND2 filter, send me a PM and I can let you know how to determine the size and how I installed them. I originally though I would have to get another ND2 filter for my HC5500, but I found that I could reduce the Contrast control setting, so that it wasn't too bright. You also have to use one of the dimmer settings (Cinema Mode, Warm1 color temperature, etc.). You will also have to dial down the Brightness setting (Black level) to maintain the best contrast ratio. You can't do this correctly without a calibration disk (a lot cheaper than an ND2 filter).

PoorSignal -- You can find out that information on page 10 of the user manual: http://www.viewsonic.com/assets/005/5446.pdf. Without lens shift, the center of the image lines up with the center of the screen. The image can be adjusted from well above the screen to well below the screen, as shown on page 10.

Just got mine dialed in enough to watch some football and it's looking good. Yesterday my hdmi hookup had a hiccup and all I watched was the vga input and I was disappointed by the noise. Today, with hdmi working, it looks like a keeper.

Lookin good and so did the dawgs first drive against ok state.

@ CT_Wiebe,

Thank you for both your time and comprehensive answer(s), good man! I shall take all of that shared experience and put it to good use, as well as other applicable post of yours I've read in other sub-forums here!

Also, in potential useful bulb utility I believe I like the idea of dialing down the C&B to start utilizing one of the advantages of the HP in this regard, longer potential bulb life.

@ novasol, thanks too for the name of this ND filter you posted!

Thanx folks for indulging me in my somewhat OT post!

Good day~

ZachHD yes all these systems has internal sound power to give to the speakers , also you can connect any out side source like ps3 to aux and get sound from them, they have hdmi out that pass the video signal to the pj, the thing is if you have a bluyray player you dont need this system , you can purchase a 7.1 av/recevier with hd decoding.
this is a combination between av/recevier and speakers:
recevier 7.1 hd:

front speakers:

rear:

subwoofer:

but i didnt find sony center you can order it from sony style or any other site:

this is a better compination if you already have blueray player for any future connection.

Ok, I just wasn't sure about getting the video to the projector from my Dish box and also a blu-ray player (which I still need to purchase) without a receiver to run it all through. The PJ only has 2 HDMI inputs which is enough for now since I will only have the bluray and the dish box. However, if in the future I wanted to hook something else to it, it would be nice to have another few HDMI ports such as on a receiver/speaker package. I was thinking of buying a bluray player and receiver/speakers seperate. Will have to see what money I have to spend.

Here's a few pics of my new Viewsonic Pro8100. First couple shots show the poor conditions I am dealing with..basically just projecting on a white wall, for now, in a room with light carpet and white ceilings. The first two were also taken with lights on ..enough to read.. It is definitely harder than it looks to try and match what you see in person versus what the camera takes. Need some skills in photography.

great pix man, very beautifull i think with this quality and color you dont need screen , viewsonic pro8100 (FREE SCREEN EMBEDED) .

CONGRATULATION.

Hi there have a little question about my ceiling mount....

What is the distance between wall the PJ?

Distance from ceiling 127mm (5) is that not enough?

I have not install yet but i'm not sure if it's enough and my screen will be to high...
