Viewsonic Pro8100 1080p Projector - Page 288

Ok, thank you. Much appreciated. I had to run a new cable to my projector, on some sources the old cable couldn't handle 1080p, just 1080i and 720p. Had to climb in attic to pull the new one. All is fine now with no jittery image.

Pro8100 Rocks!

Been hammering away playing Rage, after finishing Batman Arkham City!

Nothing like playing games at a buck 6 through the home sound system, and then alt-tabbing out to take a break and browse/ listen to tunage without having to worry about anything!

This thing is a tank I tell ya, I certainly hope that the next PJ I am forced to buy is at least 1/2 as hardy...in the meantime I will continue to beat on this thing as my daily "everything" monitor.
Hope to get another 16K + out of it!

Considering cost, it's the best HT purchase I've made to date.

I have just recently purchased a factory refurbed 8100 and i've discovered that it has that horrible horizontal banding.

Has anyone found a work around/fix for this. Ive tried everything recommended, like new shorter HDMI cable, a HDMI Extender, using VGA instead of HDMI, but nothing works to alleviate it.

Anyone have any suggestions? Return it is the only option yeah?

The horizontal banding if I remember correctly was not fixable. The vertical banding was easily fixed by using a timer that would kill power to the projector for a few hours a night.

Sorry you are having issues because it truly is a stunning picture without the banding issues.

Several members had to return their projectors, some several times before getting a good one. I am sure supplies are running very short so if you can exchange it don't wait to long.

Good luck.

There was never a solution to the HB problem. IIRC, one member went thru about four PJs to get one w/o HB. Good luck.

I have also recently purchased a refurbed 8100 and have run it for about 6 hours with no issues - from the experience of others whom have suffered this problem - how many hours do I have to clock up before I can conclude that I am in the clear with the horizontal banding? Thanks, matt

I'm pretty sure it was 40 hours or so .. you can always search the thread .. and I don't think you'll ever be in the clear ..

I've been user Dark Rider's most recent settings for the last few months. I am starting to like them but I did lower the saturation to 48. My biggest complaint with them is I notice even more flaws with the program material. With good Bluray/HD DVD material they look overall very good. With HD cable they seem to be less forgiving. I notice more compression flaws and overall camera flaws while watching sports with the most recet settings. Of course that could mean the settings are dead on and the flaws are more apparent because of it. I am not positive but I imagine the higher gamma has something to do with it.

Again with a quality source and the saturation turned down a bit they are very good in my setup. Thanks again Dark Rider!

I've been noticing some strange purple highlights on certain scenes, such as the edges of white clouds. I'll have to take a screenshot, anyone had anything like this?

You might want to search through this forum because I am pretty sure another user had the same issues, I believe he even mentioned seeing it on scenes with clouds such as you had described. I think a few people had him changing gamma settings but I do not remember the outcome.

This thread was very active up until about 6 months ago so waiting for an answer might be awhile. Not sure if people just lost interest or moved on to another projector. The Pro8100 is a amazing projector if you can find a unit that doesn't have any issues, unfortunately that seems to be a difficult task.

Me too. Had the projector upgrade bug recently but all the new projectors around $3000 seem to have issues with one thing or another. I know the Pro8100 has had its share of problems but I am one of the lucky one to have no banding issues and an absolute stunning picture. Maybe next year I'll pickup a JVC but for now I am keeping this beauty.

I think thread activity died down mainly because new owners are getting to be fewer and fewer .. and those of us that have the unit have pretty much settled in to where we are ..

Twice in the last 12-18 months I've started thinking about making a change .. then, when I do the research and later pop in a BD, I look at my screen and say "Why .. ??" ...

It's still that good ..

Although, a motorized screen would sure be nice ..

I also don't really have any desire for 3D which is also helping my decision to keep the Pro8100.

The only projector I might be interested in would the the 2D only JVC HD-250. JVC had refurbished models a few weeks ago with full warranty and a new bulb for $1049. I found out to late and missed it, I would have picked up one at that price for sure.

I've got no burning desire for 3-D either ..

If I'd seen that deal on the JVC, I would have been very, very tempted ..

It's very easy to fall into the "There's always a better picture" trap. It can distract you from the enjoyment of owning your own home theater because you are constantly tweaking and looking at upgrades. I did a few years ago and spent north of $20 thousand on my theater. Now I just try and enjoy and be thankful of what I have.

I do enjoy this thread and hope some of the other members come back and update their experiences with or without the Pro8100.

You know, we used to have a pretty active thread ..

On a side note, for those of you that remember Bouda, I've tried several times to contact him in Syria, he and I frequently emailed back and forth back in the day as well as PM thru AVS .. if any of you have heard or know anything, I'd appreciate a heads up ..

I remember Bouda, I also remember someone asking about him several months ago. Do you know what region he was from. I have a friend who is a doctor from Syria, he was telling that there are entire sections of the country completely unaffected by the violence and protests.

He actually invited me to visit him at his home in Damascus ..

I'll ask my friend tomorrow about Damascus but if I am correct I think that has been a hotbed for activity. I'll update tomorrow. He keeps in contact with his family there frequently.

I wonder what happened to Bouda. Hope all is well with him and his family.
I do know that Bouda was on Facebook as he asked me to get on it but I don't do FB for several reasons. If anyone here is on FB, might try that. Hope he's OK. Not sure if Assad shut down the internet over there tho.

PJ still humming along. Only problem is occasional freeze and have to unplug and replug. And there's always the backup unit.

HD cable can be 720p to 1080i, so that might be part of the problem.

I'd forgotten all about the freeze ups .. it's been a while since I've had one but man, that first time freaked me out ..

On a side note, I'm finishing up Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition BD .. I'm up to Disk 6, the final part .. (Amazon had a deal on this a while back, and with the huge amount of bonus material, I decided to go with it even though I have the BD's) ..

It has just been incredible .. there is nothing I've seen that equals the PQ / SQ on this set and the 8100 just plain delivers ..

Better in some areas, sure .. black level mainly ..

However, when you compare the feature set of the two, the 8100 wins hands down in my book ..

I don't want to poo poo black level .. but I do think it's a little overrated .. in a dark theater, which is where a PJ should be, your eyes adjust and if your contrast is good, black level becomes a non-issue if your unit is calibrated right ..

I would not make that statement in some other areas of AVS ..

Don't know if you have an interest but Amazon has the four Alien flicks on BD for $29.99 today. Would jump on it if I didn't already have them on SD.

I think we are the only ones that have encountered the freeze issue, at least on this forum.

I agree about the "black level" issue. To some it's the holy grail of PJs. Personally I like motorized lens shift, zoom, and focus.

I picked up the Alien flicks a few months back on Amazon UK for $23 including shipping to the US. Great deal and region free. I didn't know the 8100 was prone to lockups, something I have never seen.
Since there's only a couple of us that have seen it, I wouldn't say it's prone to it. Mine does it maybe twice a year. Have about 2,500 hrs on it.

Were your Alien's BD?

Yes they are BD's. Funny thing is I haven't watched any of them yet. I figure I'll get around to it sooner or later.

+1 If anyone hears from him, tell him to pop in and say hi. I hope all is well!

I too get bit every so often by the upgrade bug, that is until I see what it would cost me to upgrade to get a picture better then the Pro8100!
