Hi all--longtime reader and almost never post, but the Viewsonic 8100 thread kills me--so much passion about the PJs and so many problems! I had to chime in.
Me too...I have an 8100. It is the 4th unit I've gotten from Viewsonic in the last few years. I used to work for an A/V dealer and originally got a screaming deal on one. It worked great but then it failed, then another, then another. Always one problem like banding or another like bulbs blowing up. On the fourth one I basically called their factory rep and read him the riot act, he swore up and down this one would not fail. Well, so far, he's right, it's been working but....
the dreaded vertical lines...the lines....arrggh....began to appear a few months ago. So now I have to do that stupid timer thing and it shuts off overnight. Lines are still there but not as noticeable. Someone earlier said yeah, once you know it's there you look for it...so I do that too. I'm stuck with it for now, at least until I get annoyed enough to buy a new projector.
All of this stinks because underneath it all this is a great projector. When everything right on it the color is great, bright, deep black levels, motion is clear and smooth, everything. Years ago we had it set up along side several other units like a 1080UB and a JVC DILA, all ISF calibrated. Viewsonic had the best picture hands down. Now something more current wins, but it's still a good projector. I just wish it didn't have so many problems.
