Viewsonic Pro8100 1080p Projector - Page 299

I'm not. I'm saying some films better mask the deficiencies in my current calibration.

A lot of scifi movies that have a more of a blue / grey color scheme don't display the problems with red as much and don't look as strange if I bring the saturation down.

The best case scenario I could imagine (not that I am expecting this) is if someone would say based your screenshot try reducing magenta in the 3d color management menu for example.

That said your suggestion is not a bad idea.

^^^ I don't call it masking .. I call it source material .. the PJ outputs what you feed it .. it's going to vary, any way you slice it .. the PJ does not change any material that is input to make it suit your tastes .. it simply spits out what the source material is based on the settings you have made ..

I know what you are saying .. an example for me would be HD "Walking Dead" .. looks muted, drab without PCS .. turn PCS on ..

Then, "Survivor" HD .. spectacular without PCS on .. much too vibrant with it on

However, both of those examples are source material that are intentionally done originally that way ..

I go for a realistic look as much as I can that holds to the intent of the director / photographer ..

Well I went through this about 7 months ago. I had (still have just not hooked up) the Pro 8100 for about 2 years when I got the upgrade bug. I really liked the 8100 and I was one of the lucky ones who had only slightly vertical banding which was 100% cured using a timer. I tried several projectors from the Epson 8250 to the BenQ W7000.

After trying several projectors I decided on a 2 projector setup because I wanted 3D but also amazing PQ and black levels for 2D. I ended up with a Epson 3020 for TV and 3D movies and a JVC X3 (RS40) for 2D movies. As much as I liked the Pro8100 it is no comparison to the JVC on any level. The JVC is outstanding in all areas expect 3D thus why I have 2 projectors. I bought my X3 new for $2400 so the prices are not bad at all.

Hope this helps and good luck when you do upgrade.

The JVC is a much better projector. There was only one area that the Pro8100 could compete and that was noise level. The Pro8100 was just as quiet as my JVC. All facets of picture quality was better with the JVC.

I still like the motorized lens shift and zoom even tho I only use it if I have to move the PJ or something.

Thanks that's actually very helpful.

I have been looking at the JVC's as well as the Panasonic AE8000. But I think I need the brightness of one of the Epson's or the Panasonic. I unfortunately have to setup in the living room and I think its not a darkened enough space for the JVC. Plus 3d is must and as much as I like your 2 projector solution I don't think my budget will allow for two projectors as awesome as that would be smile.gif

A friend of mine just bought a Epson 5020 and he has more of a family room setup and it produces a fantastic picture in 2D and 3D. Best bang for the buck. I have also seen the Panasonic ae8000 and to me the Epson wins out on pq quality especially in a room with some natural light.

Thanks, its very helpful to hear from those who have seen a projector in a real world environment.

I'm leaning towards the 5020. I will probably try to buy from a dealer with a liberal return/exchange policy so I can send it back if it doesn't meet my expectations.

I bought a few projectors from Crutchfield, very good company to deal with and they sell the Epson 5020. You could also ask if AVS sells Epson as well, if so they might be the best option since they are always helpful on these forums.

I wouldn't say I'm trying to mask discs of inferior picture quality.

What I'm saying is something about the calibration of my unit is way off in a few ways.

Movies with a color palate that is more towards the blue end of the spectrum (for a recent example Prometheus) look fine. Other discs that maybe have more red or warm tones in them don't look as good. I think its because I've cranked saturation way down to compensate for the occasional overly red skin tone (as shown in the previous screen shot example I provided).

AV Science is an Epson dealer. You should find the Epson selling for the same price from all dealers. Epson sets the selling price of their projectors. Our return policy is less than 4 hours on the projector and within 15 days of receiving, you can return for full refund, no questions asked. If you have a problem with a new projector, we exchange for the first month.

What you've said is you like the PQ on some material, and some you don't .. I don't understand how the hardware is to blame for that .. I've been a PJ user for many many years and without a doubt I see differences in source material quality / palate / etc ..

Just be sure you view the movies in question on whatever PJ you opt for to ensure that it's not the source mat'l.

Look I think everyone is getting defensive thinking I am arguing the pr8100 is a poor projector in general.

I am saying the way I have it calibrated it looks off.

Every projector is going to calibrate differently. Differences in room environment, screen choice is going to insure that one person' settings are not going to necessarily work for another.

Or maybe as was said previously I want to the picture to be brighter then most people do. Who knows.

I am glad for the suggestions. I tried a few different combinations of suggested color temp settings, pcs settings, picture settings etc. I didn't find anything I was any more happy with. So I went back to how I have been running in the past couple years.

Which is mostly ok, just a little desaturated. I am happy enough with it. But I thought I might bring it up in case anyone else had been having similar difficulties.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I never thought you were slamming the unit .. I just don't understand your believing that any one set of calibrations can be the end all / be all for each and every source used .. nothing more, nothing less .. no matter the unit, source material is going to vary ..
I see what you are saying. Maybe for example you wanted to calibrate in such way to really bring out green while watching the Matrix trilogy. But then those settings would look funny on any other disc.

But a well calibrated projector shouldn't "need" to be calibrated differently for each disc (maybe for a different source though such as the cable box; which IE I do calibrate differently for).

I brought up some examples of movies that are more "blue" as an example of stuff that looks better because I think the problem with my calibration is red.

Another example of a well reviewed disc that wasn't so great on my system was the dark knight rises. Including some of the imax portions.

Based on the comments I am seeing I am leaning towards my room environment requires more lumens. I kill all the lights and only watch at night. But my room environment is tough. I have flat white walls and ceilings. I have a 55 inch plasma on a reflective black glass stand on one of the side walls not far from the screen.

I don't think I am going to want to repaint since I live in a rental. I am however looking into devising a masking system to work with my cheap pull down screen. So hopefully that might help.

But that said I am upgrading at some point this year. I am ready to go 3d. Plus HB is an issue on my unit unfortunately and that is also really starting to bother me.
Whatever you decide, be sure to come back and let us know how it works out, especially if you go 3D. If it's going to be a while, you really out to try one of the cal DVDs.

Not sure since I never figured out how to use the User 1 & 2 memory settings (never tried very hard), but you might be able to use that feature to tweak to different types of sources.

when i am drinkin my beers and listening to tunes. all the tunes have a different "sound"(same genre). i have to tweek the bass to make them sound better. you are having the same problem. but the pj is harder to tweek, so you have to find a way to do it, or live with it. with good source, my pj looks STUNNING (except blacks could be a little better. but i try to enjoy the movie. and not fret over the image). i think you should get some paint for the walls/ceiling, and move or cover that plasma. all this would only cost ya about $50 and a little work.

but i don't blame ya for wanting 3D. my next pj will be 3D. probably when the house is about finished = couple years

IDK, I see what you are saying. And a little fine tuning disc to disc isn't so bad. Up the brightness slightly on a dark movie for example.

But I think you should have settings you are reasonably happy with for pretty much all movie watching (I would make an exception for things such as TV viewing, day time viewing).

Having to tune the projector for every discs leads to over tweaking and never being happy enough with your projector to just enjoy it.... in my humble opinion.

I went back to the settings I have been using the past of couple years. Then I tweaked the contrast and color saturation "slightly" from where I had it. In addition I went ahead with a plan I had to add some DIY masking for scope movies. I hadn't done this before because I use a pull down screen which hangs down from the ceiling far from any wall. So coming up with something that works with my cheap screen was not easy.

This improved perceived contrast a lot. So along with the little tweaking it made me a little happier with the picture (though I still suffer from HB and don't get the absolute best results that many here seem to get).

That said I went ahead and ordered the 5020ub. I could easily still enjoy my pro8100. But I really am ready to go 3d plus I'm looking to bump up from a 100 inch screen to a 120 inch.

That's a nice setup. Very professional looking.

Can you add a little description as to how your masking system works? It's tough to tell from the resolution of the photo.

My system just involves moving the bottom of the screen up so the lower widescreen bar is blocked. Then to block the light of the top wide screen bar I added two chains with a hook on the end of each side. To which I am hanging a curtain rod with black felt.

It's a little ghetto in appearance right now (though totally effective). I am treating this as my initial proof of concept. I plan on refining it so it looks less slapped together.
man , that setup is shlocked together. but it works well.

the masking. it is a "shade" setup. a long poll with black felt wrapped around it. hanging from 2 brackets. bolted to the screen frame. and a thin piece of wood glued to the bottom of the felt to hold it straight.

the way it works for scope movies = lense shift down till the image is at the bottom of the screen. the black bar falls off the screen and is basicly unseen. then i pull the felt shade down to the top of the image, where ever it may be.

here is the same setup when i had it in my last home, a condo.

just found this.
