Is this the cheapest receiver that will process PCM 5.1 audio through PLIIx? I have the 605 and am really impressed with what PLIIx can do for DTS and DD 5.1, I couldn't imagine how good it would be with HD Audio. I don't know if it would be worth $300 extra then the 605 I have right now though. Now that I say that, I believe I can stick with the 605. Let me know if there are any cheaper then the 705.

If you don't have a HD player that can send the TrueHD via Bitstream (which would then be decoded by the 705 and displayed as TrueHD), the 705 will receive the decoded audio via PCM and it will have to display "Multi-channel" (as noted above in various posts). But believe me, your EARS will tell you that you are indeed receiving TrueHD.

Read the FAQ on post 1 of this thread.

the following section applies.

Topics Covered in "BLU RAY & HD DVD FAQ"

HI DEFINITION AUDIO QUESTIONS: (HD DVD & BLU RAY)
1) Why don’t I see True HD and DTS HD MA light up on my receiver when I play Blu Ray and HD DVD movies?
2) Is there a difference with letting my player decode vs letting my receiver decode?
3) Whats lossless (raw) bitstream? Isn't all bitstreaming the same?
4) I can't hear the audio in the special features section of my Blu Ray or HD DVD movies or any of the menu sound effects! How do I fix this?
5) Does my player output lossless bitstream?

PS: you know you getting true HD over PCM if you click info button on your player and it says TrueHD and tells you the audio bandwidth.. These high def formats usually stream at 4mbps or higher.

Old school lossy formats bandwidth is around 1.5mbps or lower.

thats how you know.

Anybody can compare the 705 to the Denon 2308? They look somewhat similar (minus one HDMI port), aren't they?

Good one

Numbers only tell me so much. Has anybody tried both?

I'm thinking of getting this receiver and I need to decide soon but I have a question that I am having trouble getting conflicting answers on

I have 4 devices that I would use this for. A PS3 via HDMI, HD-DVD Player via HDMI a HD Cable box via HDMI and a Nintendo Wii via component. Is it possible to connect the devices in this way at the same time? I know that inputs are assignable and there are 5 selections for video. However can the components be assigned independantly of the HDMI? Or am I just looking at a glorified 3 input HDMI/Component only receiver.

My plan would be something like this:

Device: PS3
Connection Type: HDMI
Receiver Input: HDMI1
Input Selection: DVD

Device: HD Cable Box
Connection Type: HDMI
Receiver Input: HDMI2
Input Selection: VCR/DVR

Device: HD DVD Player
Connection Type: HDMI
Receiver Input: HDMI3
Input Selection: CBL/SAT

Device: Nintendo Wii
Connection Type: Component
Receiver Input: Component1
Input Selection: Game or Aux

Assuming I cannon do it this way are these three workaround options viable?

Change the assignments to component when I want to use the Wii in the setup menu (is that a pain to do?)
Buy a HDMI switch so I can leave one input open for Component (although it kind of defeats the purpose of having three HDMI inputs)

You will be perfectly fine hooking it up as you've suggested. The 3 HDMI and 3 Component inputs are completely assignable to any input channel. The only thing you cant do is have all 6 in operation at once (because there are only 5 "input channels" on the receiver).
So component and HDMI can be assigined independent of each other even though they are both labeled Input 1,2,3. Will the Wii hooked up via component still output over HDMI (and in turn upscale to 720p). What about the audio. The Wii is only capable of analog red and white. I can use one of those inputs and assign it to the same input selection for the video?

The Yamaha RX-V661 at $499 list can overlay PLIIx on 5.1 PCM. However, it's not HDMI v1.3 so no TrueHD/DTS-HD bitstream decoding...a non-issue or deal breaker depending on which side of the aisle you sit on.

According to its propaganda/manual, the H/K 247 for $499 is supposed to be able to do a 7.1 overlay on 5.1 PCM, but reports say that as originally shipped, it wouldn't. See the thread elsewhere for more details...back when I quit following it, there were rumors of a firmware update "soon" that would fix this.

Just got all my wires and cables today! Woot! Got everything hooked up and started changing all my device settings. So far, I've not noticed a real lag on anything (I did nit-pick the 360 a bit and tweaked it ever-so-slightly). My DVDs and HD-DVDs play perfect on 0 A/V sync through my A3 via HDMI. Haven't messed with the PS3 yet, but a few trailers I had looked fine as far as the sync goes.

If my ears could smile, they would be. I can hardly believe how much better my same speakers sound with the 705. My hearing is not the greatest (gee, thanks ma ), but I can hear a LOT of details I never really noticed before. This is even more true when using THX Surround EX with my HD-DVD player and consoles! I'm loving the receiver and the new 7.1 speaker setup!

Now, a quick question. From what a repair tech once said, there is no signal loss when using an HDMI to DVI cable. Is this correct? I currently have the receiver going to the HDTV like this, but I have an extra HDMI cable. Is it worth the trouble to dig behind the HDTV?

Yes as i mentioned it is completely able to do what you want. Each channel has its own dedicated analog inputs (composite or svideo, red+white analog audio), and there are 3 HDMI inputs and 3 component inputs any of which can be assigned to any of the 5 channels. You can assign video and audio separately, you can have any mix of this. Obviously having HDMI for video and HDMI for audio is the best, but there is nothing stopping you from having HDMI for video, and ANALOG for audio (you just select "---" for the audio input assignment on that input).

And yes if you turn on HDMI Monitor Out, then the Wii input over component will be upscaled to 720P over HDMI (as well as being passed through untouched to the component output if you need/want)

Thanks for the response. Well considering that the 605 will decode a HD source to all 7.1 speakers if the Blu-ray is encoded in that way, I will stick with it because of its DTS-HD decoding ablility.

Hi All. New to the forum and thread.

Just ordered a 705 (backordered from Crutch until about dec 18). My need is to be able to simultaneously use headphones and the main speakers at the same time (wife has hearing disability). I have read many hundreds of posts here, not all, so I hope this hasn't been addressed .. then again i hope it has been solved ... I understand that there is a lip sync issue for the H/P's when H/P is connected to the TV headphone output or out from Zone 2 on the 705. In other words the L/S issue can be addressed for the mains but the L/S adjustment will not affect the H/P's. It seems that solving this can be a challenge especially if connections (box-705-TV) are done via HDMI ...Is this true... Are folks finding that they are able to use H/P's and mains at the same time using HDMI?

Also My TV (Sony KLV-S32A10) HDMI is not ver. 1.3 ... so is this an added compatibility issue regarding the syncing issue?

I will also try composite cables if HDMI doesn't work. Is there a L/S issue using composites? i.e. if there is no L/S adjustment needed (for the speakers) using composite connections then the H/P's from the TV or Zone 2 should work fine. Any experience from forum folks when connecting with composites and with simultaneous use of H/P's and mains is appreciated.

Can't wait to open up the box on Chrismas day ... if it's in by then.

Thanks for any help in this regard. I hope I didn't ramble too much. ... not a audio techie (yet).

Bob

I'm trying to get an idea what other Onkyo owners are doing for DSP modes (7.1 only).

True HD = True HD
DTS HD = DTS HD
DTS Master Audio = DTS MA
DTS-ES = DTS-ES ?
DTS=DTS ?
DD+ = DD+ ?

DD EX = DD EX or are you using PLIIX (Movie Mode), or THX Surround EX mode, Star Wars is DD EX plus it shows on the case as being THX certified.

DD 5.1 = DD 5.1 or do you use PLIIX.
DD 2.0 = PLIIX

I know this can be user preference and one can experiment, but I'm trying to get ideas from others who have much more experience than me especially with the THX. I have read where many of you use PLIIX, but that doesn't make since to me except for the 2.0 sources and maybe DD 5.1.

Thanks

Yep, thats how it works and I don't think theres anyway to display the custom name while viewing the input/listeningmode. The 805 has a 2 line display so you can see both at once.

Thanks. I can live without it, but I do want the listening mode displayed as well. It's just that my wife sees CBL selected when we actually have Satellite, and sees GAM when she wants to watch a Blu-ray movie - she gets a bit confused, but I guess I just need to give a bit of instruction and/or tell her to ignore the AVR display, and just use the remote as usual.

Personaly, I'm using PLIIx for any stereo input (that includes music at the moment since my wife hasn't sat to give me her preferences). For 5.1 inputs I've been happiest with THX Surround EX. It just seems to my ears (not the greatest) that there is more detail without drowning out the dialoge. In fact, on my last receiver we ALWAYS had late night mode on so I could hear the dialog over everything else. Not needed now (which is good 'cause it's often not available since I have most things going to the receiver via PCM). Now I'm not a techie in anyway, this is just my personal preference.

New to Forum. Thank you woots, Jeremy, and everyone else. Incredible FAQ and great community. Maybe if there were less posts I would have got earlier to the Thanksgiving deals instead of the current $650 best 705 price I just hit the button on .

While I wait I need to set everything else up. Main use will be movies on a Samsung LNT4669. I will use a Polk Surroundbar (clean and avoids room problems) augmented with a Hsu sub. I do have room for rears (whch other forums say can really help fill out a Surroundbar) and I am thinking of using my 15-year old Polk RM3000s back there. Those fine old speakers came with a passive sub wired in parallel. Is there any point in keeping this connected to the rears (for either/both of matrixed 5.1 or true 7.1) - does any significant bass ever get sent to the rears? Otherwise I don't think it has a use, since I don't want such an old passive sub messing with what the new Hsu sub will do up front. Thanks - this question affects my upcoming wiring tasks.
I'd say going with just your new Hsu sub will be fine, and ease your wiring tasks as well.
I am in the process of setting up my 705...however, in order to max out the audio, what dsp setting are those w/ 6.1 using...except for true hd and dts master, all others I have at thx surround ex...I havent tested yet but is this it option that will get me the most for the non HD audio? From this trend for those who have 7.1 seems pliix movie is the ideal for all non HD dsp setting..so would the thx surround ex be ideal for 6.1? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated...thx in advance

I'm new to HD (just ordered a Samsung 5064) and new to this forum and I'm thinking about purchasing the 705 but I just read a couple of negative comments about the video performance on CNET (sorry, forum won't let me post URL because this is my first post). CNET said:

"While the video performance of the TX-SR605 was disappointing, in our experience subpar video processing by AV receivers is common. "

Should I be concerned about this?

I plan to used the 705's upconverter for my xBox classic, Wii and dvd player.
Well I'm going to join this thread now... I almost bought a 605 refurb earlier today from Shoponkyo---just over $300, but I waited, and am I glad I did. Now, not 2 hours later--they have some 705s up. Talk about a deal--for just under $440 this baby is gonna be shipped

Yeah its a refurb--but a 1 year warranty I'm not too concerned

Now I just gotta lay the carpet in the theater...
