One solution might be to run the Dish video directly to the TV into HDMI input 2, with only the audio going to the receiver via optical/coax. Then your PS3 and X360 can go to the receiver first, then out from that to the TV into HDMI input #1. Then yo ucan have GAME mode on your TV input 1, and not on input 2. The PS3 audio is still going to the receiver via HDMI so you get the good audio for BluRay etc, and you arent "losing nything" witth the Dish tv audio since it would only be DD5.1 anyway which an SPDIF optical/coax can carry fine

Scarecrow thanks for the reply. I'm such a noob when it comes to this stuff. If I understand correctly I still wouldn't be able to take advantage of the TV's "game mode" because the TV won't see the PS3 or Xbox connected.

Scarecrow after reading what you said It makes more sense now. I see what your talking about. I'll give it a try thanks for your help.

still having the TivoHD audio problem. running HDMI out into input #1 on the 705. sometimes I will pause the Tivo then hit play and the audio will not produce. if i hit fast forward or rewind it comes back. same thing happens to me if i change sources to the Tivo and it's paused, then hitting play.

any ideas? some reason the 705 wouldn't recognize the Tivo audio? this is the new Tivo HD. thanks.

I'm really thinking about getting one of those Harmony remotes. I'd love to be able to turn on my receiver, ps3 or 360, and tv all with 1 button press. I think I'll look them up on eBay right now for a cheap Buy It Now price.

EDIT ::

Is there a reference link for all the different kinds of Harmony remotes? I don't know which one I'd want/need...

I've got the 670, and it's pretty nice when used with my Direct TV HR-21, 705, Samsung 5271, old, cheap DVD player, etc.

Thanks everyone.

Well the best answer would be to experiment w/ all the modes to find the ones that you like best..... or you could just be lazy and set them all to PLIIx and you'd get 7.1 playback no matter the soure's intended channels

And you should bitstream from the HD A3

is there any button on the 705 remote that would pull up a dvr list for my recorded shows? id hate to drop 150 bones for a stinking button.

I've read through a LOT of these 189 pages, though not all, and I do not recall seeing this issue addressed. I've got a Harmony 670 that works well with my components. I've got HDMI Audio out set to 'ON' by default for everyday TV watching and video gaming. When I watch movies, however, I have to manually go in and change the HDMI Audio out to "OFF" in order to listen to the digital soundtracks. I'd love to be able to program the Harmony to change this setting automatically everytime I switch back and forth, but cannot seem to find how to do this.

Anyone have their remote programmed for this? If so, can you give me a step-by-step or point me to instructions elsewhere? I'd much appreciate it.

i'd call Harmony, they're pretty good about that. but if there is no one button command for the 705 remote (which i don't think there is) you may be able to set up a macro. otherwise you may be out of luck.

i'm curious as to why people choose to not have the sytem run audio for TV viewing. i just use it for everything, why not have the best sound?

Basic question here. Ok... so I just bought a PS3 and I also have a Panasonic BD30K on order. I plan on comparing and only keeping one device. So far, using the PS3 and getting the HD audio via PCM works just fine (even though I prefer bitstream). My question to you is... can any Dolby Digital or DTS capable receiver broadcast lossless HD audio (Dolby TrueHD/DTS HD-MA) through PCM? Or do you have to have a receiver that can decode lossless HD audio via bitstream?

I reiterate the comments of why would you NOT want to enjoy the lovely surround sound on EVERYTHING you watch!

However, to answer your question there are a couple of options... you could try setting up a sequence in an activity that does the required button presses to work your way through the menu and turn on the setting (and another sequence to turn it off). However a sequence is limited to only 5 commands which might not be enough.

The other (better IMO) way to do it is to learn an IR command for the Onkyo 705 device - if you learn in RAW mode you can actually learn multiple key presses from the original remote into the one command. This will get around the fact that a sequence can only have 5 commands, and also being at the Device level rather than the Activity level means you can use it across multiple devices and even add it to the start/exit of activities etc if you really wanted to.

Some tips for doing this are to write down the required key presses (eg MENU Up Up Enter Right) or whatever. Make sure to practice practice practice! Since you are learning in RAW mode it will be played back at the same speed you did it when learning... so it's best to get it as fast as you can before trying to learn it.

One issue you will have is that the Onkyo setup menu "remembers" which submenu you were last at. So you would probably need to have your learned command assume it will always start from the top of the menu, and to put the selection back to that point after flipping the HDMI audio setting. And obviuosly if you fire the sequence/.macro and the menu was not at this initial starting point, you will end up going to some other thing in the menu and changing the wrong setting!

I just got my receiver 705
first problem is i connected everything correctly but i am not receiving bass from my JBL sub, i tried a driffent sub an it still doesn't work. Is there any setup i have to do?? thanks ...

remote update*****

the 705 remote will learn the dvr list button function. you just have to pick a button location on the 705 remote where you can remember. just learned all 4 of my remotes and it works flawlessly. i can even turn on and function my xbox 360 with the 705 remote learning from the 360 dvd remote. now im working on macro for my components. thats a whole other world. lol

I bet you connected the subwoofer cable to the subwoofer multichannel INPUT. (That is a common mistake.) You need to connect it to the subwoofer OUTPUT.

i got a fan to set on top of it but it's a bit loud - i need to get some rubber feet so it doesn't buzz on the grill. mine is running at 118-120 right now after about 5 hours with 3-4" clearance on top. looks like that is normal, so maybe i'll just go fan-less.

I was going to go with the 880 because it sounded awesome but when I found out it's a 3 year old remote, I wanted something newer. So, I bought the latest and greatest, the Harmony One. CNet says it's quite possibly the best remote ever. I sure hope so.

I can't wait to get it in the mail. Retails for $250 but I got it for $190 with free UPS Ground shipping. It'll be nice to go to 1 remote instead of all the others I've got.

I have about 6" of clearance above my 705 and run a small 5" fan above it to blow air out of the shelving it's in and it keeps it under 109 degrees at all times, no matter how long it's been running. Without the fan, however, it can shoot up to 130 degrees within an hour.

Anybody? Sorry if it's too basic of a question... my apologies. Do you need a Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD MA enabled receiver (like the 705) to get lossless HD audio codecs over PCM? Or does PCM enable any Dolby Digital/DTS receiver to play lossless HD audio codecs?

If you keep the ps3 you wont get lossless bitstream you will only get lossy bitstream.

However, the ps3 can internally decode true hd and dts hd ma and send them via pcm (up to 7.1 chans) to the receiver.

With another player like bd30 you gain the ability to do lossless bitstream. Which sends out undecoded true hd and dts hd ma to the receiver ... for the receiver to do the decoding job instead.

In the case of the what kind of receiver your need. If you just own a ps3 you only need a receiver that can receive up to 7.1 uncompressed channels of pcm. (705 can do this) Also if you get bd30 you will most likely "want" a receiver that can internally decode true hd/dts hd ma so you can use lossless bitstreaming. (the 705 can do this as well)

I dont think its that its a basic question, but more like you seem to mixing up a few things

PCM is a "raw" or uncompressed sound format that has been around since ages. Optical/coax SPDIF only has the bandwidth to carry 2 channel PCM, but HDMI can handle a full 7.1 channels of PCM.

Any receiver with HDMI audio capailities should be able to receive multichannel PCM from a BluRay player that decodes the HD soundtracks internally ands ends them as PCM. Although its likely these same receiver can decode regular DD or DTS, this isnt the factor that dictates whether you will get lossless audio from say a PS3 - the fator that determines this is if the receiver can accept multichannel PCM over HDMI

The receivers that have HD audio capability, like our onkyo, means they can do the decoding in the receiver. To do this, you need a HDMI 1.3 player that can send the undecoded "bitstream" to the onkyo

The tossup between BD30 and PS3 is a personal choice - do you want a stand alone player or a games console? Do you want bitstreamed audio or are happy with multichannel PCM (they should sound the same but if you like to see the TrueHD/DTS-MA light up on your receiver, youll need the BD30). If you are into gaming AND movies - why not keep both

Scarecrow / Brian:

Thanks for the replies. I'll see if I can get the RAW mode suggestion to work.

To answer your other questions - If it were just me, I would always have sound played through my 705. Unfortunately, the wife and kids would rather just watch TV and play games though the TV speakers. There's times I would also prefer this, like when my son is playing COD4 online at 2:00AM Saturday morning and we're trying to sleep (our bedroom is right above the media room in the basement, and I don't believe the builder put insulation in the ceiling/floor joists!).
I had a Strange problem with my 705, actually two problems...

1. Something happened with my speaker settings. I went into the speaker setup and was just checking the settings and all the speaker distances were totally out of whack. they were all set to 15' and would not change. I tried this twice and could not change it. I turned the unit off and back on, then went back into the settings and then I could reset the distances and levels. WTF?

2. the "muting" button on the remote doesnt mute, it turns the volume up to maximum! I dont have a clue as to why this happens, but it does.

Anyone else have any problems like this?

thanks for the info. i'm wondering though if 120-125 would hurt it. it sounds really hot, sure. but if it's not in the realm of any damage i wouldn't worry about it.

Mine seems to get pretty hot too, don't worry about it ...

haha. well from this thread all posts seem to point to 120-125 as "normal". mine's in an enclosed stand with a glass door, but the back is open to the wall.

I may go out and buy a harmony one today. I just bought my harmony 880 around 6 months ago so this is kinda premature to upgrade so soon. I may ebay off my harmony 880.

ya without external fan that was my normal temperature too. I would agree this is near normal operating temp for this receiver.
