only problem im having is a type of oddity in sound
also Im pretty skilled in HT so I did set it up right and using the RTA system as well
Great sound
When I hook up the receiver to my LCD ( samsung 650 series 46" )
and I use any source at all that plugged in and transmitting info
and I turn the volume past 75 On the right front and sub I get a hum
If I unplug the tv to hdmi on the receiver, HUM past 75 just on those 2 channels
I tried grounding and ungrounding the whole setup

Its only when I have any source such as DVD player via cox and cable box via Coax and cd player via rca when i hook the damn thing up to the tv via the receiver hdmi out I get that silly hum
Now when there is No info being passed on the digital ports like when I pause TV The hum is gone until It transmits data again

This is my first onkyo product and I want to love it but this issue is making me want to ebay it and save for a pioneer elite or something better..

Let me know what to do, I bought it used..otherwise, flawless

My setup is as follows:
Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver
2 Cambridge M80 fronts
1 Custom built Center
2 Cambridge M100 backs
1 JBL Venue 15 sub
1 Pioneer H400K 1080P upscaling dvd player via coax
1 Atlanta scientific 8240HD DVC DVR box ( time warner ) via coax
I have tried unplugging the cable box as well to make sure its not a cable ground issue
Its ONLY when I hook up the tv to the receiver or the other sources
so if Its DVR to TV via HDMI and DVR to 705 via coax I get hum and same if I run from the DVR to 705 to tv via HDMI loop through
same issue with dvd player

Let me know,
THANKS!
Pat

Pat,

I started noticing a hum through my sub and fronts after changing my over-the-air TV antenna setup. Although the antenna is grounded, there must be a ground loop, a well-known source of 50-60 Hz hum.

I managed to isolate the source of the noise to the RF cable coming into my TV, which is connected to the 705 via HDMI. I eliminated the hum by installing a Jenson Ground Isolator (http://www.jensen-transformers.com/datashts/vrd1ff.pdf) available for ~$50 from numerous sources.

In your case, you would install the isolator between your incoming cable line and the cable receiver/DVR. If you want to read more about this issue, it's covered in the FAQ under "Why is there a loud hum in my sub?"

Hope this helps.

Boy I wish I was as lucky as you, J.

Pat stated: "I have tried unplugging the cable box as well to make sure its not a cable ground issue. Its ONLY when I hook up the tv to the receiver or the other sources.... so if Its DVR to TV via HDMI and DVR to 705 via coax I get hum."

If he disconnects the coax from the box and the hum goes away your suggestion should work. But he could do a service call to the cable guy and get one for free. I have some from when there was a cable line voltage problem and I was using my Yamaha RX-V1 and a kid loaded up on these. It worked! This problem was corrected long before I purchased the 705. But... I think he's been thorough with his diagnosis. Its the 705.

I am compelled to share my experience, if for no other reason than to get it off my chest. I will never buy anything from Onkyo again. Last November I replaced an older Denon with the Onkyo 705. 4 months later it crashed and burned so I sent it to DTR (the closest repair facility). Getting it back took about a month and a lot of follow up, but ok...not too bad.

Then in June, it flakes out again (overheating seems to have been the problem). Back to DTR. A month later, no word. When I ask I'm told that the part needed to fix it is no longer available, but they'll see what they can do. Are you kidding me?! The thing was introduced only a year or so earlier. Another few weeks go by, no word. I bug them again. Nothing new. I call Onkyo and ask them to take it back and give me whatever is fair in terms of pro-rated value (I would have taken anything). No can do.

A month or so later I contact DTR and they contact Onkyo. Magically, the part is now available (or perhaps the guts of another unit) and they are going to fix it. That takes a few weeks and I finally get the unit back in early November. That's 4 months for a warranty repair on a unit that had already been in the shop and was about 7 months old when it crapped out the second time.

In the interim, I bought another Denon and have since given the 705 away...I would have felt guilty trying to sell it. I sincerely hope all you owners are enjoying the Onkyo (which I liked when it worked, btw) and have better luck than I with reliability. But if anyone ever asks me, or is looking at this thread for feedback, the combination of quality and service have turned me off Onkyo forever.

After a month, I finally got my 705 back from the shop. Both HDMI boards had to be replaced and they performed firmware update to 1.05, all covered under warranty. Why they didn't get the 1.06 firmware update I don't know.

offbeat question........ I have the 705 and just for giggles I looked at the 706 on Onkyo's website. It states that the 706 has 7.1 chanels where as our 705 has 7

What is the difference between the 7.1 and the 7 ?
They both have 7.1. .1 referes to the number of sub preouts.

Yea, that is what I thought also. Probably a typo in the spec comparion chart on the 705 and 706

I need some help setting up my Listening Modes after getting my 705 back from shop. I watch TV through DirecTV which broadcasts mostly in Dolby D. Most of my DVD's are BluRay and then there's my PS3 games. What should preset my Listening Modes to in the Listening Mode Preset menu? Would also like to avoid the delay and clicking between shows and commercials. I knew how to do this when I first got my 705 in March... lost some brain cells.
Sorry if this has been asked 700 billions times. Does it matter if you have it on 4 or 6 ohm setting if you only running 8 ohm speakers?

3) Why does my Onkyo 705 make clicking noises?

Take the time to set all your Listening Modes to specific options and not the default. If you leave all your listening modes to default every time the audio format type changes as your flip TV channels your receivers hops around to different DSP modes.. So you will hear a clicking as the receiver is switching amplifier modes. I have most of my stuff set to PLIIx Movie so as I flip channels it always stays in that format and I don't get click noises. Only time I still get a click is when I start up Blu Ray on my player as the player starts up before it gets to the menu.. After that no more clicks.

As stated in the manual - 6 ohm.

I read this but that's not answering my question. I want my receiver to automatically recognize Dolby D and be in surround mode. I have a 5.1 channel speaker set up. What should the settings be in the Listening Mode Preset menu first?
If I'm not watching a TV show or movie through DirecTV and it's not in DD, I like to listen in Pro-Logic. I play my DVD's, Bluray and CD's through my PS3 which is set up as DVD in the Listening Mode Preset menu. I'm a purest so I like to listen to music CD's in stereo. Everything else I want to hear in DD or better. That's where I also want the 705 to automatically recognize the source. I hope I'm explaining this right.
A perfect example is while watching the TODAY Show which is broadcast in DD 5.1 the receiver recognizes and displays DD 5.1. When they go to local weather or commercial, there is a delay and the receiver changes to DD Surround 2.0 PLII Movie. Before playing around with this thing again this morning, I had it set where it would stay in DD and no delay. That was also the point in updating the firmware.

This is how I have mine set on CBL/TV Listening Mode Preset.
  • Analog/PCM - PLII THX
  • Dolby Digital - THX Cinema
  • DTS - DTS
  • D.F.2ch - PLII THX

I don't hear any pops. If this doesn't help, hope someone else can lend a hand.

Do you have surround back speakers connected?

If yes, do you have "Dolby EX" set to Auto? page 86 of the Owners manual.
this setting is located in #3 Audio Adjust- #4 Dolby EX

EDIt: oops sorry I see you have 5.1 set-up.

the search function on this site is terrible. When searching for "pre out" it lists everything with EITHER pre or out!

Anyway. If I wanted to use an external amplifier for just the left and right channels connected via the pre outs, would the other amplifier channels still work on the reciever (i.e. the surrounds)?? I just want to make sure. Thanks.

The pre-outs are always on as are the amplified circuits.

I agree the search function could use some work. The quote marks thing doesn't always work as expected. You would have been better doing a +pre +out. That should get you results only containing pre and out in the same post.

I do not see why this wouldn't work. I have 5 channels hooked up and the BSS speakers still work.

Yea, the built in search here isn't that good. I'd recommend you use the thread tools and download the thread, and use word or notepad++ or something similar to search. Or just use the Google AVS Search at the top.

I just picked up a Panny BD35. I have the 705 with the factory DSP. Am I going to have the speaker popping problem if I bitstream the BD35? If so, how do I fix this (without using PCM)?

Where can I get the firmware update that resolves the shotgun issue with DTS-MA? The FAQ link to download the firmware says then when I try "Your 24 hour window to download this firmware update has expired".

Sometimes when I change channels on my DirecTv HR21, the Onkyo 705 flashes "Dialog Norm: +4", that channel is nice and loud.

(DirecTv is hooked to 705 via optical cable)

The 705 reports "Dialog Norm: -2" for channels for channels that I need to turn up.

This "Dialog Norm:" message flashes very quickly on the 705, so there is no way to change the value.

Does anyone have any input on the Dialog Norm: message?

I would like to "normalize" all channels sound output on the 705, is there a way?

EDIT: on the FAQ page there is a link given discussing Dialogue Normalization concerning Dolby Digital.
Does not look like anything that can be adjusted on the 705 by the user.

I have my directv dvr connected to the tx-sr705 via hdmi, then hdmi from the Onkyo to the tv. I've had no problems whatsoever for almost a year. Now, when I turn on my tv, then the Onkyo, I get no picture. The input is correct on the Onkyo and I do get a picture after I reset the dvr. Anyone have a similar issue with this??

Sounds similar to the situation I have with the Motorola Fios set-top box. Since the set-top box need to be "reset" (I actually need to do a power cycle) for the handshaking to be restored, I believe it is not the 705's fault.

So would you attribute that to the hdmi cable itself?? I'm having to do a reset about three to four times a week now. I guess what troubles me is this was never an issue until about a month ago....thx for the reply!!
