it seems that when i use pure mode subs want to tear down the house. basiclly i am wondering if audessy is affecting subs response.

Yes, turing Audssey off in the equalizer menu will leave the timings and level cals in the other sections alone.

It sounds to me like you have your subwoofer turned up too loud. Look in the level cal menu and see what it has your subwoofer set at. If it gives you big negative number like -6 or -10 then you should turn down your sub volume knob down and redo Audssey. Using "Pure Audio" would disable this setting making the subowoofer louder. If you like a loud subwoofer, try turning the subwoofer in the level cal up to 0, and leave audssey on.

thank you for the reply.
i have my receiver trims at -3, subs spl leveled at 77db. i was just wondering what it sounded like without audessy. i am running twin epik towers.

If you already tested the cable and the components, then the only thing left is to double check the HDMI assignment menu, maybe the port got unassigned somehow. If that's good then it sounds like a hardware problem with the receiver, not much you can do about that.

If your still using the batteries that came with the receiver I would guess they need to be replaced. Mine only lasted about a month before it started to do the same thing that your describing. After I put in some new Duracell's every thing worked as it should and have been doing so for a long time now.

Sounds like changing the batteries will solve the problem. I'll do it.
Holding the button in for 20 seconds got it working correctly, but only for about 15 minutes.
Thank you for the help.

I'm having trouble with an HDMI switch I just bought and the 705. I'm confident it's either the switch, cable(s), or HDMI handshake issue. I bought the Olevia SWIT3x1 (Syntax-Brillian). I have everything plugged in correctly - using HDMI 1 set to DVD on the 705 and using HDMI port 1&2 on the switch with the HDMI out going to the HDMI 1 IN on the 705.

No matter what I do I can't get a signal on the 705 from either component (both DVD players). I plug directly into either and it pops right up. I plug back into the switch and nothing. I tired using the remote that came with the switch and my Harmony One.

Any ideas? Am I missing something? Anyone else using a switch or this model? I haven't tried different cables, I'm using the ones they came with the switch.

The exact same thing just happened to me. The middle HDMI input (IN2) went out.

I have a Monoprice 4x1 switch and have similar problems. Believe it or not, your components may or may not work depending on which port on the switch you plug them into (if at all). My DVD player won't work on ports 1 or 4, my Xbox 360 won't work on any of the ports, and my DirecTV HR21 works in any of the ports (I had to plug the 360 directly into my 705). I tried three switches, all with the same results.

Meh, I was really hoping this would be plug and play knowing the odds were not great for that. When is it ever that easy? I'll try a couple of other components and see what happens. The Harmony makes it easier with "activities" because I'm not so obsessed with HDMI input assignments.

Thanks for info. I'm not up for the hassle of returning this thing.

Luckily, Monoprice has a good return policy; shipping back and forth (three switches) cost me nothing.

Darn, I'm somewhat disappointed to learn that I won't be able to use the receiver's 12V trigger function the way I had thought. I have been very pleased with my 705 for well over a year now but just recently added an Emotiva amp for my front and center channels. If I read correctly, you can only use the 12V trigger in conjunction with the Zone 2 function. I connected the cable and confirmed that activating Zone 2 in the setup menu and then turning it on from the receiver front controls does in fact turn on my amp. However, this is at the expense of my rear surround speakers. I like to use Prologic IIX-Movie for most everything I watch but those channels will be inactive if I choose to use the Zone 2 for triggering my amp. Oh well, I suppose I will just have to turn on the amp myself.

if you turn off the powered zone 2 option, does that let you turn on zone 2(RCA outputs only) without disabling the surround back amplifiers but still firing the 12V trigger?

There are "smart" power strips that might work for turning your amp on/off automatically. I haven't used one, but I think others on the forum have. Search on google or amazon and I'm sure you'll find some.

The power strips are a bit pricey, at least the ones I've seen. Another option is to get a 120v AC to 12V dc converter/transformer and plug it into the switched outlet. I think the universal ones that Rat Shack peddles are usable. The thing to watch for is that often these so called power supplies or bricks do not give you good DC. Some are simply voltage reduced and 1/2 wave rectified.

Can someone please tell me what the best DSP setting is when playing a Blu-ray movie with an UNCOMPRESSED PCM audio track?

Thanks in advance.

I use a sunfire amp for my fronts and center, whihc has an auto-on feature.I did not connect the 12v trigger from 705 to amp. When I switch to cable and tune to a HD channel the amp turns on after a few seconds. But if I tune to a non-HD channel the amp does not turn on by itself..Not sure if emotiva has any such auto-on feature.

Pick the one that sounds best to you. I've gone from straight PCM, to PLIIx, to THX Select 2 and I really haven't decided which I like best yet. I'm leaning towards PLIIx. It's only been a year since I got the 705. These things take time.

I was wondering if anyone else has found that the "pre outs" for the left and right surrounds are reversed? I know you think I'm nuts or this isn't possible but I've checked and double checked. Here is how I found it.

I recently added an external amp to my Home Theater and found that when I connected everything and ran Audyssey that the rear channels in my 5.1 setup were reversed. First let me say that everything is color coded including speaker wires and all connections. The interconnect is a five (5) conductor cable that is color coded and verified with a multimeter for proper labeling. Speaker cables were moved from the Onkyo TX-SR705 directly to the new amp matching the same setup as before.

This is a real head scratcher. I'm not really asking for a solution because the obvious is to just switch the cables for the surrounds, which I did, and all works as it should. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one? I bought the unit new from Crutchfield in 2007 but never tried the pre outs until now.

Really strange...

I went through the same couple days ago. I suppose we will just have to live with it.

Until I read this email , I thought I was plain stupid for not being able to connect the cables properly to my amplifier. I finally got the correct settup eventually. I wasnt able to see the the rear inputs , but got it right by tone testing and changing inputs.

Yeah, this is something I will be looking for in my next receiver, whenever that might be. I never had a reason to use a 12v trigger until now but seeing as how I'm hooked on amps now it's something that will be essential next time.

I used to be able to get the audio from my PS3 (hooked up via hdmi) to my tv. Now i cant? The reciever has HDMI Audio out set to enabled? Is there a setting somewhere else i may be missing? Maybe something on the PS3? Audio works fine through the reciever speakers. it is just not passing it down the HDMI to my tv. Dishnetwork also hooked up via HDMI is passing audio just fine.

Just a shot in the dark, unplugged the PS3 hdmi and then plugged it again or reboot the sstem perhaps you do not have a good connection. When I first had the PS3 hooked up was not able to get true HD and found out that my HDMI input was not set in straight and that did it, had excellent sound and HD.

hey everybody. I have one of these receivers and I seem to be having a problem with it. I've read that people have had things like tivo and even an N64 hooked up using s-video and composite inputs that were output via HDMI. However, I cannot for the life of me seem to get this to work on my receiver. I checked the manual, I think I have everything set up correctly, but the video refuses to display. Here's basically what happens:

N64 is connected to any input (aux, game, etc.). HDMI monitor is set to yes, everything else is assigned to '---', you can hear the audio, and without the video cable plugged in it sends a 480p signal to my projector, albeit a blue screen. the second I connect the video cable, the signal is lost.

no matter what I do, the second that video cable gets plugged in the signal is lost, and I absolutely cannot get this N64 to display out the HDMI. Does anybody know what I could be doing wrong? Again after reading and searching through the thread it seems that other people have been able to do this without any problem, which makes me believe the unit might actually be defective. I really hope thats not the case but I've already done a factory reset and even messed with the hidden menu to no avail.

any help is greately appreciated! thanks in advance!

I live in the Chapel Hill, NC area and have a Time Warner digital cable box (Scientific Explorer Atlanta 3250HD) and a Samsung LN-T4066F. When I am watching a program on CBS (and this happens ONLY with CBS) in Dolby Digital (my receiver confirms that is the case), the sound will randomly switch to All Channel Stereo and back again, sometimes only a couple of times during an hour program, sometimes frequently enough to drive me crazy, because every time it happens there is a pause in the sound. The switch to All Ch Stereo doesn't last very long before it goes back to Dolby. This happens during the course of the program, and not just when it switches to a commercial or local network interruption. So is the receiver, the cable box, the cable company, my tv, the network?? As a relative newbie, I would appreciate some help in tracking this down. Thanks.

I dont know if it's just me, but is uncompressed PCM weaker than DTS-HD MA and TrueHD tracks???

For some reason my uncompressed PCM tracks on my Blu-ray are noticably weaker. My DSP is set to PLxII.
Has anyone tried Direct or any other DSPs?

Any advice will be appreciated.

It isn't that hard to do a workaround on this. As I posted above, get a 120v AC to 12V dc converter/transformer and plug it into the switched outlet. I think the universal ones that Rat Shack peddles are usable. It will turn on and off when the receiver goes into and out of standby, switching your amps on and off with the receiver. A $10 solution.

I have the opposite on my Pio Elite '01, no switched outlet, but 2 12v triggers that are assignable to operate on a given input selection. A power strip and a 12v relay solved the problem.

Hi to everyone

I have this strange problem- I am trying to connect notebook dell e6500 to the one of the receiver's hdmi inputs. The pc has displayport which i turn to hdmi with an adapter (displayport-to-hdmi) cable. So there is picture on the TFT screen but no sound. If I connect the laptop direct to the TV (LG 37LF76) there is both sound and picture. Has someone experienced this type of problem. Please tell me how to proceed or where to seek information.

thanks in advance
ok heres something i noticed. if I hook up my component out to the receiver and turn HDMI monitor off, it shows the video, but it jumps all over the place. changing the resolution in the hidden menu to 720p doesn't work at all. So composite to HDMI out doesn't work at all, and composite to component out works but is broken. does anybody know what could be wrong? I cant get this n64 working at all, but other people in this thread seem to have done it.

Edit - I just called Onkyo tech support, looks like I have to bring it to a service center.

If you have 7.1 setup, PLIIx is best.
