I also have the exact same problem, starting probably 8 months ago. It only seemed to happen watching cable though, but that could just be coincidental. It sends my dog into a blind frothy rage every time it happens too.
More recently I will occasionally get loud pops and the receiver will shut off. This makes me wonder if this isn't all related to overheating. For now I have just stopped using the receiver for day to day use and only fire it up for XBOX and movies, and there have been no problems. Thinking of just getting a Denon, but would rather not spend money on this.

That can be an indication of a capacitor failing, sounds like a cricket.
A cap flipping out would cause this noise through the speakers, or are you just referring to all the bizarre sounds caps themselves can make when they're on their way out?
