How do I......

My HD upgrade has been done by DISH today. PQ is great. How do I get my 5.1 surround to work from my audio receiver? The receiver it's self has no optical or digital coaxial type of plugs. As far as I can tell only thing back there are RCA type plugs. I've heard that if I use these it will not reproduce true Dolby digital surround? The back of the TV has from what I can tell by the owners manual a digital audio out that should in theory connect to the same type of Dolby digital in connection on the back of my receiver. I guess what I'm saying or asking is there a way to get real 5.1 surround with the receiver I have now? TV is a Panny TH-58PX60U and the receiver is a Pioneer VSX-D606S if that helps out anyone. There is something about AC-3 connections back there but again I have no idea.

Your receiver HAS to have at least one digital input!! Look at the back of the receiver near the AC3 connector you mentioned. The digital coaxial connector (and optical) should be marked "Digital" - just hook up a coax cable (like RG6) from Dish receiver to your AV receiver.

Just looked at the specs on this receiver. It only has one Digital Coaxial input and no optical, so hopefully your Dish unit has a Digital Coaxial out, then you'll be set.

ok but what in the world will i be looking for around the AC3 connectors? They all look like RCA type plugs and all are color coded with black.

Sure but they should have labels. If you cannot read them, they should also be indicated in a diagram in the user's manual.

His inputs are AC-3/PCM digital in, assigned to LD and DVD, and AC-3 RF-IN for LD.

Connect the Dish coax output to the digital in for LD or DVD. If yor Dish box only has optical, there are converters that you can buy.
