Before this firmware when upscaling PS2 games and selecting full screen on certain TVs (like Sony's XBR2) the image would not fill the screen but leave a black boarder, thi is no fixed and selecting full screen lets the image fill the screen

nice little fix

Might want to edit your title. It says "not fills the screen".

wow. im super excited about this. i own a plasma and am slightly neurotic about burn in. i hated seeing those borders...

Great news. I play a lot of ps2 games still. I just wish the ps3 automatically set the ps2 games to hd and 16/9. You have to do it manually in each game.
I was also excited about this but after playing around with it last night the sides are now subject to a lot of overscan and the result is that the left and right sides are noticeably cropped off now

The fullscreen mode essentially just stretches the image, correct? So before this update, it would stretch it, but basically not far enough.

I really wish the PS2 BC was like Bleem! or similar. I would love for these games to RENDER in HD resolution, like they would on a PC emulator. The PS3 should have the power for that, methinks.

So is there a way around this overscan problem now?
I noticed this as I was playing Resident Evil 4. I wonder if it treats wide screen games the same as 4:3 games?
Yes it effects 16:9 games as well as 4:3 games. I tested it on Jet Li's Rise to Honnor.

I'm not getting any clipping of the sides. Maybe because my projector has 0% overscan?
I never had a problem with how the games were before with a bit of "underscan". This was how my PS2 games ALWAYS looked on my PS2. Personally, I'd rather see all of the game then some chopped version that has way too much overscan.

My tv does not overscan at all. Those of you that have tv's that do are getting cropped sides because the image extends all the way to the left and right side (no black bars on the left or right sides on my display)

There are still noticeable bars on the top and bottom though. Because of this, the image is stretched more horizontally than it should be, and characters look a tiny bit fatter than they are supposed to be.

The point here is that they stretched the image horizontally too far. It is not normal to have a display with 0 overscan. It is more typical to have a display with a little bit of overscan and I could argue that most average joe's have a LOT of overscan on their various TV's. It seems like the firmware may have over done it a bit on this change.

I just tested Madden '08 PS2 and I see absolutely no change on the screen size from what it was before. Is this issue only with downloaded PS1 games?

So is this somthing Sony will fix with upcoming FW updates?

Most likely. With all the other problems, I'm sure we're going to see a 2.02 or something within the next few weeks, it not this week.

I don't think there are a lot of "other" problems with the update. Plus, it would be very speculative to assume that Sony will release another update so soon for an issue like this overscan problem.

Actually, the best thing for all of us to do is to send a comment into their support about this problem so that Sony is aware that this is an issue. Sometimes I think people assume that posting a problem on a message board means Sony is going to automatically know about it

I just tested Madden '08 for the PS2 and I see no difference in the screen size from what it was before the firmware update. I'm very happy with this. Maybe the OP had issues with only downloaded PS1 games??

On my Panasonic plasma, the new update stretches the game across the entire screen. No underscan or overscan on either side. However, you get very, very small black bars on the top and bottom.

Nice feature and it's definitely improved, but I'll still take be playing my 4:3 PS2 games in Justified mode. The fullscreen stretching makes the characters look way fat.

The image now stretches exactly to the edges of my projector, which has zero overscan. They should probably just put in an option in the settings to disable/enable overscan support.

Here's a tip. Turn off upscaling, and see how it compares to the scaling of your TV.

The upscaling on the PS3 is so very pitiful.
You guys keep using the term "overscan" wrong. Overscan is simply a TV issue where it doesn't so 1:1 pixel mapping. If the PS3 is cutting off the sides of PS2 games, it's a cropping issue.
Yeah my Display is 1080p with 0 overscan and 1:1 pixel ratio.

So this is a problem with peoples TV's and not the 2.0 update? I changed the overscan on my Panny 9UK and now PS1/PS2 games fill the screen perfectly on either side and when I switch to a PS3 or Blu Ray it still fits
