Make sure the BD30 is the last thing turned on. This is not techincally an "error". The BD30 is not sensing any HDMI connection and the U73 is the code for that. The way you make sure you don't see the U73 message is by turning everything else in the chain on first, BD30 last.

Also double check your HDMI cables. I had some excessive "stress" on my cable for the BD30 (thick Series-1 Blue Jeans Cable) and it was causing intermittent connections which in turn cause the U73 error.

Once and for all, the BD30 does not decode True-HD

Perhaps "decode" isn't the proper word. The BD30 passes these signals (including dts HD MA) to a receiver via bitstream over HDMI, but the receiver must be capable of processing the signal or no advanced audio will be available. You will only get dts or DD. I think of what the receiver does as "decoding," but that may not be technically correct.

You will not get advanced audio from the BD30's analog outputs. (IIRC, your BD10 does this, except for HD MA.)

In any case, my answer to the question is appropriate, as are the others that said the same thing. The HDMI 1.2 receiver he was considering will not give him advanced audio when connected to a BD30.

I bought this player on Monday. Can I update the firmware? Is there a firmware on this? If I can update it, how do I do that? Pretty newbie question but I've never thought about updating firmware on anything

try reading this thread, or better yet, the giant thread about the 1.6 firmware update for the player. later.

I appreciate all the quick feedback on this topic. I'm in agreement with Macfan's response, as that is what I understood. BTW, I already own the BD30. What I need to figure out is which of the newer crop of receivers, which brand will hook up with the BD30 and give me the TrueHD sound? Is anyone here usingone of the the latest models from Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha, or Onkyo and able to output TruHD successfully? Thanks!

Yes you can. The BD30 will deliver LPCM from the analog outputs if the Blu-ray disc has such a lossless audio track.

The Onkyo 605/705/805 series are HDMI 1.3 compliant and will decode True-HD and DTS-MA coming via bitstream from the BD30. I use a 605 and it works great. I know there are a number of other AVR choices that will work also.

The Yamaha RX-V1800 and RX-V3800 both do. I have the 3800; works great with both my BD-30 and XA-2.

Today seems to be my day for semantics. Again, I don't think of PCM as "advanced" because it's been around in one form or another for so long, going back at least to Laserdisc days. But I'll quickly concede that is my personal (mis?)interpretation, and most people would probably consider the 5.1 or 7.1 versions as advanced. And, of course, the BD30 does pass 5.1 PCM through its analog outlets.

Pickings are still a little slim, but there is likely to be many more to choose from at a wider range of price points in the next few months. I'm sure most manufacturers will be on the bandwagon soon. I know Sony has announced some low priced versions. Meanwhile, there seems to be a number of happy Onkyo and Yamaha owners here, several of whom have already responded.

Not been announced formally but expected to msrp for $600. The real comparison is this:

*single 2.0 compliant player that decodes everything via HDMI and analog at $600

vs

*Yammy receiver, which takes up a lot more shelf space
*interconnects between Yammy and your Rotel
*a big PITA factor in operation of the system
for $500

I know which I would do.

How so?

Current receivers that decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA:

*Pioneer Elite 91, 92, and 94 TXH
*Denon 2808, 3808, 4308, and 5308
*Yamaha 661, 663, 1800, and 3800
*Marantz 7002, 8002
*Onkyo 605, 705, 805, 875, and 905
*Sony ES 5300 (and others I think but I couldn't care less about Sony)

Seems like quite a selection to me, price ranges from $400-$5000. There's a few pre-pros out too.

Several models by Sony and Pioneer have been announced for the next months as well, all under $1k.

Lots of options in AVR land for HBR decoders. Check out the AVRs that support HDMI Audio Multichannel PCM (MPCM) and/or HBR Bitstream Decoders thread.

Less options in Pre/pro land. Check out the thread below.

Add Yamaha RX-Z11 to the list.

Yamaha THR6190B = RXV1800 so add that to the list too.
Denon 988 does as well I believe.

rynberg,

what sound would i get if i go 6-channel out from the bd30 to the 6-channel input to the rotel rsp1068 on bypass mode?????
Thanks for all the suggestions. That's the info I needed!

I don't believe the yamaha 661 decodes the formats. I could be wrong, but I believe that is what the upcoming 663 will do.

Ok guys I have the weirdest problem with my player, Last night I was about to watch a movie when I noticed white speckles on the blue Panasonic screen. I'm using a monoprice v1.3 HDMI cable hooked to my Onkyo 805. The weird part is, That ive had my player hooked up for a little over a week now and this just started to happen, could the cable go bad that quick? So what I did was use the HDMI cable from my XA2 and the speckles where worse . I bought these v1.3 cables at the same time just last week, but I see no speckles using my XA2. For my last try to get the speckles to go away was too use a old monoprice HDMI cable that ive had for a few years and bam no more speckles . So how unlucky am I get 2 bad HDMI cables in one week? Oh and by the way the cables are only 3 feet long so distance ant a factor. I think its kind of odd it took a week for this problem to show up, has anyone else had this happen? Thanks again Ryan

here are some pics of my setup:

^^^^ no help on your issue, but dang i wish i had an HDDVD player that would just bitstream and not internally decode the audio so i could see TrueHD light up when i play the Matrix!!

Your kidding, right??
Ok, first an apology for being a newbie. I'v been reading this site for a while. Believe it or not there are a lot of "average' people looking for info to get through the AV maze. Been waiting and waiting and now looks like I only have to think about a Blue Ray player. I understand the Pany BD30 'does not decode TRUEHD'. Simple and practical question: What is the practical downside to this, what will I hear as a difference between true HD, or will I hear any difference? What am I losing , again is there enough of an audible difference, or am I looking at this totally the wrong way. I should get 5.1 and 7.1 through HDMI, correct? I have the Sony 5200 receiver and just got the Mitsubishi 4900 projector. Hopefully won't offend anyone, but for all of us out there who get less and less particular as we get older, do I get the BD30 now or wait for the BD50 (by the way I enjoy watching movies, look at the deleted scenes and bloopers and really don't see a future for me where I need to be on the internet through my blue ray player). Thanks for some practical clarity.

Never confuse the impossible with the highly unlikely. It could happen. But still, dould you have a strange bend in your HDMI cables that could damage them? Or could you have a physical problem connecting to the pins, like a spot of dirt or grease on your player or receiver? Maybe a slightly loose connection that vibrates with high LFE? Just some thoughts.

YOu don't care but others might. Sony STR-DG 2100, can be bought at Amazon or B&H, both authorized dealers, for around $800.

In your case the only reason I could see to wait for the BD50, would be if you're uncomfortable burning your own update cds. With the BD50, you should be able to update over the internet, with the BD30, you have to burn your own firmware disc.
