BluRay is "Surfs Up" and I've chosen Dolby TrueHD within the disc's menu.

anyone?

I am 99% positive that the PS3 cannot pass High Bitrate Audio and therefore cannot pass TrueHD to the receiever.

It can decode and send the PCM, though, so you get the same result.

It cannot pass TrueHD, but I believe it can decode the TrueHD and pass the raw PCM. The result is the same either way.

PS3 2.0 update was supposed to provide True HD etc, and it did not deliver to great disappointment. The rumors for months was that 2.0 was the end all be all update. LOL and many are just pissed. Anyway it can't do it. Hopefully we are still praying that a software fix is forthcoming from Sony. Keep your fingers crossed.

True if it can, but the light will not go on. Would rather have the great sound than the light, but it may be hard to tell if the full TrueHD is decoded. Does the 4308 do 7.1 PCM, the PS3 can ceratinly send it.

How do you know for sure if the AVR is "decoding the full TrueHD" just because a light comes on?

Set the PS3 to PCM. Then the PS3 decodes TrueHD and sends it to the receiver as PCM. You are then getting TrueHD and the 4308 handles the PCM perfectly. The only thing you don't get is the little light.

The PS3 info display will show you on screen that its decoding True-HD.

From the reading I've done around the forums, it is rumored that we will get an update that will allow internal decoding of DTS-HD MA that will output as PCM. As for bitstreaming the hi rez audio to a receiver, the jury is out on IF the PS3 can even do it. Some say that the HDMI hardware in the PS3 is not designed to send this info.

I have no facts or links on this info. Just info from what I've gathered around the Bluray hardware forums over the last month or so.

The 4308 can do 7.1 PCM I believe. I'll need a BluRay to test it. I would have preferred to simply set the PS3 to Bitstream and then just let my receiver do the decoding. But when I set the PS3 to Bitstream and then chose TrueHD from the disc menu the receiver output only Dolby Digital. Disappointing. So I did go back to the PS3 menu and switched back to PCM. The bitrate was significantly higher so I was clearly doing better here. The disc menu offers True HD as well as it's own 5.1 uncompressed with the latter delivering an even higher bitrate.

It wasn't "supposed" to do anything that was hype and wishful thinking.

My point exactly.

Switch between standard DD and TrueHD and you should hear a difference.
