I haven't seen any players advertised as part of the BF sale that I would actually want. Lots of places are advertising a Sony model for $79 that I haven't seen one good review for. I will probably watch for a deal on Amazon for one of the current Panasonic models, or I may opt for a Philips BDP-3406 for the simple reason that I know it will play all my divx discs, even though it may not have what anyone might consider great picture quality. I have not actually seen one in action.

Best Buy and Target are both advertising the 580 for $109 on Black Friday.

Eventually I want to put all my Blu-Rays on a big drive and have the player read it from there, to eliminate clutter.

Is that what you are already doing when you use your player to read DIVX discs?

I have a HTPC from which I can play anything. I don't have a BD player with DLNA. I have an older Philips 5990 DVD upscaling player which plays divx. Most of the current crop of players that will actually play divx , mkv, m2ts files, etc., will only do so from a USB port or directly from a computer with DLNA. The Philips BD player will play divx files from a disc. when searching for divx and divxHD capable players it's confusing and difficult to find those that actually will play these files from a disc. I think any of the Oppos, a Panasonic DMP-BD85, and the Philips BDP-3406 will. I have a large divx collection on disc and want to be able to play them in my living room where I don't have a PC. I have seen few user comments about the Philips, almost none here. Probably not what any videophiles would choose.

Are there any Blu-ray player deals posted anywhere here? I've tried several place here on this site. So far, striking out.

Ok, thank you. Why would they want to kill this kind of helpful info? I found the other thread first, and there is nothing there! I hope this place isn't like some of the other web sites I also visited. Lot's of high end talk, but little practical help. But thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

what are you looking for...a $50 deal or a $350 deal?? 3D & high end or middle of the road? BD players are everywhere for next to nothing. I was happy to pay $300 for a good player 2-years ago...now can buy better model for $200.

I picked up a sony br player and the picture quality is fantastic. Contrary to the negative reviews, it streams netflix perfectly.

Like most br players, it can be a bit slow to load (at least compared to my dvd players), and it is a bit noisy at startup, but it does it's job very well.

One thing you will quickly discover is that reviews on a/v equipment are incredibly unreliable. I put zero stock in them whatsoever. For any product there will be hundreds of satisfied customers who will never post a review ,and dozens of OCD never satisfied types who will complain if the packaging so much has a fingerprint on it.

I wouldn't discount the reviews completely, however you do need to ascertain whether the complaints are valid. And if there are enough reviews, a pattern will emerge.

It's a pretty good deal.

Does he need WiFi?

I agree, that is a pretty good price on a pretty nice player. It has built in wifi, and you can send in for a free avatar 3d blu-ray. Which might not mean much, but hey, it is free.

I just bought the model right below that one, Leah. I'll echo Stew and say if he needs wifi then it's a good one. If not you could step down to the 110 which only has an ethernet port built in.

Also the 201 has the little deal where you wave your hand over the top of the front and the tray opens. I guess if he's "gadgety" he'll like that.

Costco has two sales going on right now for wifi and 3D enabled blu ray players:

1. Panasonic 215 for $130.

2. Sony BX58 for $100.

Question: is the 215 identical to the Panasonic 210. Any differences?

The 215 should include an HDMI cable.

Yeah, they're identical, based upon some quick research.

I think the only other difference is that the 215 doesn't have a front usb port?

Free Blu Ray player with purchase of certain Panasonic plasmas on Panasonic's website, also B&H has similiar deal. Check if your employer has a Panasonic discount program like mine does, just picked up a Panny LED for $100 less than Amazon's price.. $200 less than Best Buy.

J&R is listing the Panny 320 for $130 and the 220 for $109. Both with free shipping.
