I went to Wal*Mart at 6:00 this morning and was the second one there. They had plenty of Playstations, but I am glad I went when I did because I had a lot of movies to choose from, that by 8:00 were all but gone.

I picked up:

So it worked out pretty well for me.

He's talking about the 40GB model, which is normally that price. The 80GB is $100 more, and adds a few features.

Ditto -- at my local Wally World, they had 3 PS3's available and a great selection of BD movies -- surprisingly we were second in line until 7:50 when two more showed up and only one was turned away. What a bargain (and I am not a gamer).

Amazon has a buy three BD movies and get a free remote that I will take advantage of next IF it is still available.

I just came back from my WM. There was no one on line and the store manager did not have a clue about this deal. She had to go on-line to see it. She found it and I got it. The store in Roxboro NC had about thirty movies to pick though, all of which I did not have, so these are the ones I got:

I showed up at my new super walmart this morning around 7am. It took a bit of effort on my part but was able to snag two of the whopping three 80gb PS3's. I did get to choose my 20 movies and ended up with this.......

The Manager had to override all of the movies and my 2 receipts don't even show them, plus I got two "Gift receipts" for each PS3. I should be able to return them and just keep my 20 movies. Then sell the movies I don't want.

They had 2 or 3 left, and were following instructions from a print out for ringing it all up.

Is the rebate form inside the box, or what?

Got this deal at the Troy, MI walmart and no one else as around when I got there at 8 AM. They had 4 left after I bought one. I tried to sneak in the Shrek 3 HD DVD in my 10 movie selection, but the guy caught it and said BR only.

Found out about the WallyWorld Secret Sale yesterday late p.m. After going by the closest one yesterday and calling all three Wally Superstores yesterday and into the night, nobody had any left (supposedly sold out already to shrewd "in the knows"). But I persisted thinking they've got to have some (at least the min. 2) and saving them for the deal at 8 a.m.

Went to the closest store at 7:15 this a.m. and same story . . . no 80 gig PS3's. Used their phone to call the next store and she said, "are you the one that's been calling during the night"? I said yes and she said she'd hold the last one for me until 8:15. I busted it knowing they'd be others there with similiar stories. Sure enough, I got there right at 8 and two other guys were already there (one was there at 7 a.m.). But, they were holding one for the first guy there and the last one they were holding for me. The other guy was starting to get upset, saying he didn't know that they could be held, but I gave him the ph. to call the last store. The clerk knew the clerk at the last store, called them on the other guy's behalf and got them to hold their last one for him as well. So off he went and all three of us got the deal.

Very fortunate that they were kind enough to hold them (which they're not suppose to do) and especially for me getting into this PS3 frenzy at the very last minute.

P.S.

Got some titles that I wanted and some that I didn't, to hurry with the transaction. It took them about 30 min., as it was, to figure out how to ring them up as no sales. I plan to exchange the "don't wants" today at other stores. Hopefully they'll have more of a selection.

Just got back from my Walmart here in California. They didn't receive their PS3 shipment, so I got a raincheck. The "official" movie deal is you get Spiderman 3, Night at the Museum, Gost Rider, two movies of your choice, and 5 movies via mail-in offer. This is clearly documented on Walmart's web site. Those of you who got to choose 10 movies got a "special" deal courtesy of ignorant Walmart employees.

Thanks for the coupon site. Is this the only place you send off to for the (5) free disc? The clerks didn't give me a coupon, but thought it was in the box, as well.

LOL, the same was said for HD-DVD just a few weeks ago. Given the difficulty of this deal, I suspect many more people got in on the $99 A2s.

You mean HD. I bought my A2 for >$98 from there. Skipped this deal since it's still $500.

I'll buy a PS3 when they get under 200.

Was going to ask my mother who lives in south utah to stop by the wm down the street from her house to pick one up this morning, but I reconsidered after the expected mayhem.

On a whim, I called the store by them at 9:30 this morning, and got the reply 'sure, we've got a dozen or so systems left, and a whole display of movies' when I asked if there was anything left.

Happy as a clam since nothing in Canada even comes close to this deal.

Now I just need to get rid of the ps3. (no use since I don't play games)

Sounds like demand for this was nowhere near what the A2 at $98 sold.

Agree the comment was ill-informed, but the PS3 deal is good too. The $99 A2 didn't come with any extra movies (so I chose the A3 with 5 extra movies for $199). The 10 extra movies with this deal is arguably worth nearly $200, so $300 for a good player AND a decent gaming system (with a free game) is a pretty decent deal. If you're not interested in PS2 compatibility and SACD playback, the outpost deal was more comparable.

Posted that yesterday evening...May have failed to mention the local guys that matched was Sears. BB did this for me also once on a 70" TV deal, so if someone out there prefers local pickup, I've had no problem getting stores to match+ when I see a decent price drop at Fry.com. Not even Frys local store will match their own online deals.

Looked again today at Frys.com and this unit went back up to $399. Looks like their BR units highlighted 'red' on-sale last night went off sale overnight. Maybe only dropped to $299 for a very short while, but not sure:

I bought a PS3 with 10 I choose movies today at WalMart also. I just wanted a Blue Ray disc player to match my HD-A2 that I bought for $99.00 at WalMart also.

So what all do I need to make this PS3 be a Blue Ray Disk player?

Also, does the 80g PS3 have optical sound out, HDMI video out and can you use the controller as an remote?

What does the A2/A3 have to do with this thread? This is about what Blu-Ray players or deals that are out there.. I don't want a A2... Man if I talked about the PS3 in a A2 thread over on the HD-DVD forum I would be castrated... lol.. So keep the cheap 720/1080i players and look at all the so called Walmart deals that are now on ebay... LOL jk!

So what Blu-Rays players do they have at Walmart?

Got my lazy carcass out of bed at 5:30 and drove over the Super Wal Mart on Military Highway in Norfolk (store 1811 for those keeping score at home). Got there before 6. Other than a few dozen employees still policing the battlefield from the previous day, there entire store was basically empty.

I walked through the deserted store back to the electronics area. First thing I noticed was that they had very few BluRay movies on display. The choice and quantity was very, very poor (they had maybe 30, all titles, total). Second, no PS3s. Nowhere. Once I managed to find somebody that worked there, they had no clue about the sale. Second, they had no PS3s. Sold them all the previous day.

I was pretty ambivalent about the entire deal (especially give the totally crappy selection of BluRay movies) so I just decided to go home and go to sleep rather than kick and scream about it (especially since the was an online ad only, and I didn't have a printout)

So questions:
1) Any thoughts as to good BluRay deals right now? I'm pretty "meh" about the PS3 (have a 360, and I don't like the non standard remote). I can get an 89 GB out the door for 499 with Motostorm included.

2) Should I complain to Wal Mart corporate about this? It seems that there are plenty of other stores that didn't know about this sale, I just didn't feel like jumping up and down since a) I was tired and b) I wasn't that excited about the deal in the first place, given the really awful selection of movies at the store.

You need a HDTV with an HDMI or DVI interface and a cable to connect it to your PS3's HDMI interface. You could actually run it to a SDTV, but whats the point


Yes, on the PS3 setup, select the optical out and the included game controller works fine for a remote, but I bought the other remote anyway since it's eaiser for the wife to get her head around using it.

Did you even read what you quoted? If you had, you'd see I was responding to another post, and was actually defending the PS3 deal. Why people can't have a mature conversation on the topic without getting their panties in a bunch is a mystery to me. But anyway, to answer your WM BR players question... I only looked at the PS3, because that seemed to be the best deal. Didn't even look for other players.

Wilf_Brim: you might just keep an eye on local and online sales for the PS3 because I am sure there will be more deals before Christmas. There also will be deals like the stand alone unit from Samsung the 1400 is a great deal for $339... It is on Amazon...

It appears that this sale is so "secret" that most Wal-Marts don't even know about it. lol. BTW, looking at things from a marketing standpoint, what exactly is the logic behind a "secret sale"? I thought the goal in retail was to maximize sales....not minimize sales via strange advertising methods and making customers jump through hoops. I used to work at Wal-Mart in the early 90s and the head cash register manager (I believe they were called "CSMs") really tried to minimize overrides and what-not. I'd think corporate would not be happy with the system manipulations that are being done just to ring up this ridiculous promotion. All I can guess is that Wal-Mart is trying to gauge their online presence, but it sure seems there would be better alternatives than this half-baked idea.

It was clearly intended to generate hype, and bring customers into the store. It's also quite obvious that Sony is dictating what the PS3 can be sold for, so the only way to make the PS3 a "loss leader" is through the movie giveaway (thus, requiring the overrides). Their failure was in internal communication and execution.
