Their failure was in internal communication and execution.

You bring up a good point because Walmart tried this also with the Toshiba and there fire sale and it didn't even help them win a week in software sales yet. Also a boat load of them ended up on Ebay, I can see the same thing a happening with the PS3.

I got my 80 this morning. Went in at 7 oclock and retrieved the 10 decent movies I stashed in the hardware dept. Tues.

Good thing too, there were hardly any blurays to be had in the electronics dept.

My Wal Mart got in a whole three more PS3s for the promotion and virtually no movies.

I waited around for an hour and just as I was checking out a couple came in and asked for the deal. They went and picked out 5 blurays and 5 hd dvds.

Not much of a to-do here but at least I got my XMas shopping for myself done.

I printed coupon off of your site.

The coupon printed off of that Site has exactly the same
selection of BD DVDs and address as the coupon that I was handed by a Wal Mart sales associate when I purchased my PS23.

Went to Walmart here in California. They didn't receive their PS3 shipment, so I got a raincheck. The "official" movie deal is you get Spiderman 3, Night at the Museum, Ghost Rider, two movies of your choice, and 5 movies via mail-in offer. This is clearly documented on Walmart's web site. Those of you who got to choose 10 movies got a "special" deal courtesy of ignorant Walmart employees.

I thought the goal in retail was to maximize sales....not minimize sales via strange advertising methods and making customers jump through hoops. I used to work at Wal-Mart in the early 90s and the head cash register manager (I believe they were called "CSMs") really tried to minimize overrides and what-not. I'd think corporate would not be happy with the system manipulations that are being done just to ring up this ridiculous promotion. All I can guess is that Wal-Mart is trying to gauge their online presence, but it sure seems there would be better alternatives than this half-baked idea.

Not only that, but the sale is so "secret" not even the Managers and Employees know about it. Fortunately, WM is 5 min. from my house so it was easy to comply with the CS request that I go home and bring back the email with the sale details. I got there at 7:00 am, back to the store at 7:15, next person looking for the deal didn't get there 'til 7:30. There were 3 of us at 8:00 am for the 5 units they had so, as far as I know, still 2 units left (Las Vegas).

They also don't have any HDDVD or BR movies displayed - you have to know what you want and ask for it. Interesting system ...

Although "secret" help me obtain a good bargain, it really did not promote the BD format very much. Luckily, my local, suburban Kansas City WM not only knew of the secret sale and had their 3 PS3's ready, but also had a new rack of Blu-ray DVDs ready to wheel out at 8:00. It sounds like there was a major case of a lack of appropriate information for some WM department managers. This was a great MISSED opportunity for Sony to promote the BD format as well as to sell lots of extra PS3 games for Christmas.

i got my ps3 but they only let me pick out 5 bluray movies and said i had a rebate coupon in the box for 5 more free, but i checked the box when i got home and there wasn't a rebate in there,so i printed out the rebate form bluray.com. there was no free movies in the box.

I wandered in to the local wal-mart here in York, PA at 7:45am and was prepared to stand in line or leave because I came too late. What a surprise to find an almost empty store and I was the first one there for the deal. Talked to the sales rep, she made a call and said "we have one." Before doing that I looked at the blu-ray selection and it was pretty thin. Only found about 5 movies that I was interested in. Well at 8am, they brought out the PS3 for me and the special cardboard display which had more movies. I walked out with Spiderman3, Santa Clause 3, Mr. Brooks, Surf's Up, License to Wed, Cars, Pirates 1 and 2, Ratatouille, and Hairspray. I was happy with the deal as many of those movies were $24.96 or $29.96. If you didn't get there soon, you wouldn't have much to choose from. Some of those movies they only had 2 or 3 in there. Not sure how many PS3's they had. They just brought out the one that I bought.

Overall, I am happy with the deal and now I am "purple" since I have both formats here at home. Transformers is why I bought an HD-DVD player (free movie deal also). To me, the PS3 deal seemed like a no-brainer to me to enter the blu-ray market.

Edit: Titanfan, according the walmart website it states that the deal "includes movies such as Spiderman 3, Night at the Museum, Ghost Rider. Valid on Blu-Ray titles under $30. Additional 5 free Blu-Ray disks by mail offer is also valid."

Important words in there being "such as" and "also". For our wal-mart, the available movies were dependent on what they had in store on that display they brought out at 8am. Now I can still get 5 additional movies via the mail-in offer. So I am going to defend my knowledgeable wal-mart employees who did know what they were doing considering on the register it said "override needed for 10 blu-ray offer".

Forget the long lines with no inventory. Check out Sharp's BD-HP20, now down to $299

Kind of a no-brainer for me. I had purchased a 40gb for $340.77 at K-Mart. This deal was $531.44. $190.67 difference. I checked on e-bay, amazon, best buy and circuit city for the cheapest "NEW" prices on the 10 movies (that I was going to buy), they priced out at $221.95. That put the actual 80gb PS3 cost at $309.49. Which means I'll be returning the 40gb PS3 and be $31.28 + BC for PS2 games and the Motorstorm PS3 game ahead.

I didn't get to the store until about 8:45, there was 1 person picking out Movies and they had 4 in the case. I was picking out movies for about 15 min. and no one else even came into the electronics dept. while I was there all the way through checkout. They had a good selection of movies too.

Hey guys so with all these sweet deals, I'm kinda torn between the 40gb and 80gb PS3. My first question is, does the extra space matter? Second, do the 40gb/80gb have a Digital Audio Coxial output?

Here is what I'm deciding between:
The SonyStyle has the 80gb for $499 with MotorStorm (no Spiderman 3), and an extra controller. If you get the card it's $100 off, so $399 + tax.

Or, you can get the 40gb for $399 with Spiderman 3 but no game, and the extra controller. If you get the card, then it's $299 + tax.

So my last question is, is MotorStorm + extra HD space (40gb) worth $100? Are there any other "bonuses" for the 80gb?

Yes, the differences are posted all over the place. For the most part, it's Motorstorm vs. Spiderman 3 (included in the 40GB), an extra 40GB of space, two extra USB connections, memory card slots, SACD playback, and backward compatibility with PS2 games (currently somewhere around 85-90% and improving, vs. 95% for the 60GB, vs. 0% for the 40GB). Even if you don't care about these differences, the 10 free movies make the 80GB worth it IF you can get the Walmart deal. Otherwise, you need to weigh the importance of the other differences. I definitely wanted SACD playback, the other differences are just bonuses.

--i went to my walmart in Marshalltown, IA (they still have 3 units available as of 2pm!!) at 7am expecting a line. nothing. the guy in the electronics dept knew what i was talking about and was extremely helpful. he even went back and brought out the display of additional blu-ray films prior to 8 am to allow me first dibs. let me pick out any 10 <$30 and had the mgr override the disk costs. very pleased with walmart!!
--my WM got in 8 addtional units for the promotion and kept them behind the counter. i am glad i waited for an xmas deal. at ~$30/movie, the ps3 will only be $49 in the end after all "free" movies have been attained.

I was in my suburban WM at around 1:00 this afternoon and decided to check out the PS3 deal. There was no rush or hubub to be seen. They still had three 80gb units securely behind glass.

I asked the kid working there, he said, "Yup, any 10 BDs under $30". They did have a pretty good selection...maybe 30-40 different titles. I tried to gather up 10 I really wanted, but just couldn't make it work.

I'm not a gamer at all, and not thrilled about having a game console in my HT rack, so I decided to wait for a SAP at around $300....maybe next year.

At $500, it didn't seem like there was much interest in this deal at all.

What long lines??? More like NO lines!
Same here as far as no lines...my receipt says 2:30pm and at least mine was the last 80GB in the display case along with another 40GB but I was uber surprised to see any left. Picked out my 10 BRD and cashed out. I definitely think that the $500 price point is still above the "deal" range for the average customer. But I was happy!

You should reread the clear document on the website.

"Includes titles such as Spiderman3, Night at the Museum and Ghost Rider. Valid on Blu-Ray movies under $30, additional 5 free Blu-Ray disks by mail offer also valid. Minimum 2 per store."

Agree 100%. The local WM has no display and no mention of available BR discs - not a list, nothing (they don't play favorites, same with HDDVD). Kind of ironic as all their TV's play a BR promo loop non-stop. When I asked the Dept. Manager, he said they had to put them away because the "shrinkage" was too high. Since I don't think it's larcenous videophiles, how surprised are the shoplifters when they get home and put the pilfered BR disc in their DVD player !

"Shrinkage" is also damaged goods and goods dropped off by the customer in other areas of the store when they find a better deal or just decide that they dont need to buy the item after all. But I would say that in this case, they are probably talking about theft.

Drove 50 miles this morning and got mine. Just as the ad stated...buy the PS3 and go pick out ten under $30. Not a tremendous selection, but, I got to decent ones. I am out in the boondocks and was very pleased on the deal

I read the posting from a few days back by the WMManager, and was expecting a long list of BR disks for under $15, and a 'super, secret' deal on the Sony 300 player. Turned out that in my WMSuper store (Phoenix), the 'deal' on the Sony 300 was only $380. So I asked about the PS3s and was told $400 and $500, which was a WHOLE LOT MORE pocket emptying than the HD-A3 I just bought from Amazon for $180 with 5+5 free movies. And not mention of a sale, no listing of special prices, not PS3s on display. I was disappointed in every regard and left without buying anything. I was hoping to get format neutral, but now will wait to see if a better deal comes up soon, or if Sony is going to repeat their mistakes of the 80s when they killed the Beta format with high player prices and stiff royalties. This week, Toshiba has lured me in, while Sony has left me out in the cold, and I _wanted_ be come format neutral!

And as the 10+5 free disks making the PS3 80Gig a great deal, with Amazon doing a '3 for the price of 2' sale on both formats, I could get at least as good a selection as WM had, and get 10 disks for around $130, which just barely covers the difference in price between the 80Gig and the 40Gig. And I do not need to worry about PS2 compatibility, as I still have a PS2 from years ago that is virtually unused. I was born to early to really get into the video gaming craze, so I am mostly looking for a good video player. And I just checked the % free rebate. Like Toshiba, they are now down to pick one from 5 small sections, and almost all movies I have little interest in.

Still looking to be format neutral so I can play the Blu-ray titles I have already bought!

Got the deal at walmart at 3pm today. 1 unit left that someone returned from a sale a couple weeks ago. I saw the lady bringing it back to re-stock and asked her if I could have it.

Went to the register in electronics with my 10 movies and the guy was like "where'd that come from, they were all gone earlier, I just turned 4 people away". Cha-Ching for me! Great selection for me to choose from (about 40 or so titles).
