Lately I've been browsing NewEgg and seeing that BD burners
sell for about the same price as standalone players. Seeing as how I've got a computer already connected to my TV, I've thought about replacing the DVD burner in that machine with a BD burner.
Now I realize that there's the HDCP crap to deal with, but has anyone here any experience with playing BD movies on a drive built for a computer? Must I be using Vista with its DRM support to play commercial movies on these devices? Is the quality comparable to a standalone player?
I use Linux about 99+% of the time, but I don't think it's yet possible to play AACS encrypted movies on an open platform even though the encryption scheme has already been broken
. I'd be willing to boot Vista for those times I want to watch a BD movie if that would make everything work and work well.
