But the CDW deal is the first I've seen the 550 listed below $399, which is the new $100-lower retail price. A lot of places (Amazon, etc) still list it as $499 on sale for $399, when in reality it was Sony that knocked $100 off the retail price.

Sony, Amazon, Crutchfield all have the 550 for $399.
Rainbow Appliance lists it for $439!

I was expecting the 550 to drop below $399 after it started shipping, so I was surprised with the CDW deal for $345

Fry's has the Panny BD-30 in-store for $249. Not sure about online.

$346 for the S550, I was thinking the Panasonic BD55 or waiting for the Oppo, but that is a great price and maybe might be worth getting it.

I called the other day after reading about this deal here. I live in Chicago, and used to work at Tweeter, so I called one of the store managers I know.

All the boxed units were already sold within the region, and the only ones left were display models or service returns. Further, the price was $198, which is higher than what the guy in Florida paid.

Since I used to work there, I passed given the fact that no box would be available, probably no remote control, and the unit most likely had been stuck in a closed cabinet with a receiver cooking for its entire existence. Given the laser failures on some of the BD-30's, it was not worth it to me.

Do not forget that time is money, and my time is worth something to me.

I picked one up at Costco two weeks ago for $299, and I have a lifetime return policy for a full refund when I am done with it.

"$346 for the S550, I was thinking the Panasonic BD55 or waiting for the Oppo, but that is a great price and maybe might be worth getting it."

I'm feeling the same. I e-mailed Oppo trying to get them to at least give a ballpark date for release of the 83. Waiting for their reply.

If these kind of deals continue it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect to see some S350 at $199 and the S550 at $299 in a few Holiday blowout sales.

Here's Oppo's reply;

"We are hoping for a Winter release (November 2008 through February 2009) but we will not release the player until we are sufficiently happy with the quality of the product.

Best Regards,"

I expect the Oppo 83 to be priced in the $399-$499 range. If we split the difference in their time line it looks like a Xmas release...can't see them missing the Holiday sales season unless they can't avoid it. So, I guess it comes down to...is it worth waiting 2 months and spending another $200 to get the Oppo over the S550?

Just want to understand here.

If I do the sony 150 off deal... The fine print says that a 150 dollar credit will be posted to your card within 8-12 weeks.

Does this mean it will take 150$ off of your balance, or that you can spend 150 without adding to your card?

A small difference to some I know, but I have to replace a dead upconverter and wanted to wait until prices came down for a good one. But for 150, who cares if it isnt the best player.

After your initial "qualifying purchase" of over $300, a $150 statement credit will then be applied. This will reduce your balance due by $150. Also, for most people this usually happens within a few days of the initial charge--the 8-12 weeks is more of a CYA thing for Chase/Sony. Since it usually happens before you receive your first statement, the net effect is the same.

Yes, they do carry it. I went and looked at the one Panasonic 30 unit left in Houston, a floor model for 198. I passed on it, beat up pretty good. I did end up with a BDP1400 Samsung for the same price off the shelf, very good shape - no box, no manual. I like it so far. They also had one more Sony 300 model new in box for 198 (that was yesterday here in Houston).

Guess I lucked out here. Mine was still new in the box. Sealed outside and everything inside was still in wrappers and packaging. If it were a floor model or return, I would have passed as well.

It's $248 through Electronic Expo on Amazon but if you purchase this way you can't use the "BDPLAYER" promotion to get $50 off (at least I think, haven't tried but that's what the promo details indicate)..

Through Amazon the price is still $279..

My bad!

Plus they probably have a shipping cost.

I'll be more careful and hope I didn't get anybody's hopes up.

Put in the code bdplayer in the coupon/discount section. And I think they have to be Warner movies. I didn't try any non Warner blu-rays, but you can give it a shot and see if it still works.

Went ahead and bit on the amazon deal. Got the Sony BD-350, Batman Begins, Blade-Runner 5 disc version and The Getaway (McQueen) for about $263 shipped. I'm sure better deals will come along but I remember paying about $250 for my first regular dvd player back in 97 or 98 when they came out. I wanted to wait longer but with all the cool new movies hitting bluray I had to get in. I'm excited now.

Sony sends an Email within a couple of days then you just go to the style store and purchase.

I will just cancel the account next month.

I never thougt it would be this low so fast.

Guys the question is do I buy now? Or do I buy in November/December? I am also going to purchase a laptop in early december. I plan to spend between 750 and 1000 dollars on that and I could buy a BD player at the same time (and maybe a new monitor/HDTV). Do I wait and hope to negotiate a better deal maybe at a B&M since I will be spending a reasonable sum of money? Or do I hope to score a deal maybe at newegg on all the stuff? I'm torn as these players are getting fairly cheap now, but if I can wait 6 or 8 weeks and score an even better deal I'd rather wait.
