What reseller ratings are you talking about?

I had a look here and during the last year there is only a handful of ratings, some positive and some negative. The rating from that site is meaningless because it is not based on a large enough sample.

I see shop.com has lowered it to 109 after a rebate of $20 in that price.
Is this Toshiba's last stand?
Or is this the retailers siding with BR?

Who cares about the retailer. 109 for a A3 is a fantastic deal. There are plenty of movies out there that will never look better (limitation of source) and BB online and Netflix to rent. Oh yea, makes your old disks look better too.

I just email, I have never called them, and I usually get a response by next day. In one particular item I got 3 refunds, you just need to make sure that the price shown is from Amazon and not a third party seller. The 30 days start the day they ship the item and not the day you bought it.

I'm sure the price will fall as the list price is 149.99 and Amazon always sell for less, so people buying the units today, buy from Amazon and keep an eye on the price, just email customer support when the price drops and ask for a refund, do this every time the price drops until your 30 days are up.

I tried to get Best Buy to price match Compusa's 129 and they said that they wouldn't since they are going out of business. they looked at it as a going out of business price even though it was online.

That is 100% unacceptable.

i don't know how best buy thinks they are going to move more than a handful of hd-a3's at $299. of course they do know what they are doing. they have billions of dollars of revenue every year, and their profit is about a billion dollars a year.

systemax owns tigerdirect and compusa.com. i believe that compusa.com website no longer has any affiliation with the compusa retail stores, which were bought by a liquidator. but best buy won't match tiger direct, anyways.

of course i couldn't convince magnolia to sell me a tivo series 3 in 2006 for $200 off (would have marked the price down from $800 to $600 when their cost was only $500) with a plasma hdtv wall mount (which would have cost $500, although i would have gotten $200 back from it via a panasonic mail-in rebate) because they sold my plasma hdtv for under cost ($999 on black friday -- and their cost was supposedly somewhere between $1200 and $1400). so they gave up a $100 profit on the tivo and probably about $200-$300 on the installation, and instead they were just consigned to just sell the television at a loss. smart business sense there, my friends.

glad i couldn't convince the manager at best buy, however. i've since purchased (or been on the receiving end of) two series 3 (250 gb) tivos. one was about $550 from dell in december of 2006. the other i got from jellyfish for $400, and i will be getting a $200 rebate check back in a few months. and i ended up not wanting to wall mount the plasma hdtv anyways after getting my floor-standing polk speakers (so i want the television out 2-3 feet from the wall because the bottom of the television is below the tops of the speakers).

They have 115 ratings, and a 3.61 lifetime rating. There are enough choices on the internet, that there is no reason to buy from a company like that.

But if you feel the sample size is not large enough, go ahead and try your luck.

They don't have any in stock locally. I can get online. I was just hoping to get there for this weekend. You know how much it stinks to have to wait for a new toy to arrive.

I am more of a netflix watcher. I was thinking. 129-$22 (2 dvds on ebay)-$60 (5 DVDs on ebay)= $47+ tax of course. It would cost more for an equivalent upconverter.

I have a HTPC and would probably eventually upgrade my rig to play them, but $47 in the end really good to be able to watch HD material.

I know everyone is bailing on them now, but there are some really good movies out on the stantard

They won't give you a BR player, they'll give you a refund of your purchase price. Maybe for $10-$15, but $50 is a rip off.

Costco has the D3 for $129.99 in-store only.
The price marker had today's date on it so I'm assuming this is new.

with circuit city at those price points, best buy will have to follow suit. since many people in the general public are going to buy a hd dvd or blu-ray player at best buy, this is good news. the lower prices will increase the adoption of hd dvd. in the end, the consumers can and will decide this format war, not the studios (try as hard as they might).

Those are retail prices. Everyone will be selling at those prices soon enough, including BB.
Sony will be forced to counter offer though, and with all those exclusive dvds that BR has now... well, it's gonna drag out for a while, but HD-DVD definately has their back against the wall.
The new prices will help, but when Sony finally decides to sell players for less than 2 bones, it will be all over. Paramount and Universal has some serious decisions to make as well. Holding out could cost them everything.

There are only half a dozen people that have bothered to rate Datavis.com during the last year and half of those people were very satisfied and half were very dissatisfied. Companies like Datavis are successfully completing thousands of orders every month. That stat from resellers ratings is statistically insignificant and meaningless.

If you mean "soon", probably not. These sales are Toshiba desperately trying to sell units in the face of a bad week for HD-DVD. They're selling from a position of weakness. Unless suddenly millions of HD-DVD players go flying off the shelves (with 5 PAID movies, each), there is absolutely no reason for Sony to touch BR/PS3 prices.

I still think the HD-DVD movie prices need to come down for this to have a significant impact, though... When a movie costs 1/3 what the player costs, they're not going to be convincing people to buy in...

That said, I have a feeling this is just the beginning for player prices... I'm definitely on the lookout for an A35 or XA2 that some BB somewhere just puts on clearance for $199 to get it out of the store.

I am going to wait it out for a bit....I am sure they'll drop once the whole mind set shift....

Even though HD DVD is kinda "dead" for lack of a better word, I'd still suggest people pick up one of these cheap players. HD A3 for $150 is great considering it'll probably last a few years at which point a combo player can be had for $100. Don't be afraid of losing on this investment.

You know, one thing to consider with these huge price drops on HD-DVD players, if enough people buy them, could the movie studios not re-consider their plans or simply change their plans ? I don't mean this as wishful thinking (I own neither yet), but what would happen if HD-DVD players were to surpass BD players in total units sold ?
