I have to hand it to Robert for being so up to date on market conditions.

Apparently, Toshiba has authorized resellers to lower the prices from what I have read.

I printed out the page from compusa showing it was $129.99 and here is what I ran into.

Walmart: They only match prices in flyers and not retail prices. I had to ask for a manager on this one and he agreed too. They were selling the A3 for 298... last week it was there for $199. Jokers

BestBuy: They will no longer match Compusa because they are going out of business. They also do not match online orders. The funny thing is that I was going to order it online and pick it up the store and have them price match it and refund me.

CircuitCity: Same as Bestbuy basically. But atleast they had theirs down to 149.

They should be getting in line with what is going on. It is ridiculous that they seem oblivious to market conditions.

So I was gonna order off compusa or tiger. After tax and shipping, it came to $153. oigh

Then, I remember reading a post about this place Value Electronics. I went to their site. It was nice to see more than one or two HD DVD players listed. I didn't even know that Onkyo had an HD DVD player. I ended up going with the A3. I spent $149 period. plus I got 9 HD DVD instead of 7.

While I was on their site, I noticed they are also pretty good on HD DVDs. They have the majority of their 29.95 HD DVDs marked down to 21.99 which isn't bad at all.

I also must admit that I felt better buying it from a "smaller" business. I hate dealing with overzealous corporations that don't care of the customer.

I like the comment next to the support number... "if you would like to talk to a human being..."

Thanks Robert!

PS: I wouldn't send my ex-wife to costco let alone buy something from there. The idea of have to pay $50 for the privilege to shop there just makes me angry. I don't care if I am a "member" of the store for doing so.. All it is a way to get you to commit to only buying from them. After you pay $50, you shop their for the "perceived" value. What you don't get is the same selection everyone else is given. And unless you are going to spend a small fortune, how much are you really saving. No thanks.

I'm real close to going a head and ordering from Robert but I have to ask two things. Is the Shipping (ups) free? And when it ships will it be in a box or will it be shipped with just the A35 box? I don't want the whole world knowing I'm getting an HD DVD player....

Thanks

The absolute lowest price for the A2 which is an older generation Toshiba HD DVD was $99 at Wally World a wee bit before Black Friday. This player is slower to boot up and had a older version of firmware.

The D3 is the current gen with a very good upconversion chip BTW, and ours has been flawless playing a multitude of HD DVD's.

If you can buy it from Costco, do it for the "right to return" no questions asked policy FOREVER, and the 7 free HD DVD's!

Waiting for a sub $100 deal will NOT include the liberal return policy!

The fact that this player CAN play HD media AND is a excellent upconverter model is a bargain at the current price point.

Listen up,

You can go to Costco, join up, buy the $129 player, and cancel the membership the same day with a full refund of your membership fees.....at anytime....no questions asked.

Posting blanket statements like "perceived value" without substantiation is ludicrous and misleading. Regarding selection, in terms of warehouse businesses, Costco is the premier leader worldwide. And they were 1 of ONLY 2 retailers to REPORT A BETTER FISCAL 2007 HOLIDAY SALES REPORT vs. 2006, a testament to their client base.

Finally, buying the player at $129 and receiving a full refund for your membership IS a GREAT value WITHOUT spending a "SMALL FORTUNE!"

"Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund."

Unless the manager would try to classify this DVD player as a computer, the stated policy does not support your statement.

When I ordered mine, it free UPS ground. This is pretty fast shipping. It comes from New York so UPS.com might be able to give you an estimate of how long.

As far as packaging, I don't know. UPS usually doesn't let you ship in retail boxes. I got the 2 free extra DVD so I would assume it would all be in a box.

Are you ashamed of the player! When you get, run through the streets proclaiming your excitement..... word of mouth is a good advertising tool!

I did some research. There is one clause that they do have. You need to have the same membership. If you cancel your membership after you purchase and get a refund or cancel down the road, you lose that lifetime return policy.

It seems like a fair policy for now. What happens if they change the rules the road. Apparently, they just changed them for alot of electronics because people were abusing it. They could very well add gaming consoles and video players to that list.

But... it is still definitely better than getting scalped for $300 from BB or walmart.

I still think Robert's deal is better. When you figure in the tax savings (if you qualify), his deal is probably gonna give you 2 disks for $10 more. I live in PA so outside states are taxempt in mail order. Some states still make you pay at the end of the year... if you report it (or atleast that is what I am told)

I would feel funny returning an HD DVD player after 2-3 years because I just don't want it anymore. It doesn't seem right to me. But to each his own.

I just bought an A3 for the bedroom to compliment the XA2 in the living room. Great prices on a great piece of hardware! I just wish they would have lowered the prices a week before Christmas. I think they would have sold a boat load.

Chris....
That for sure they would have!!!
A heads up for anyone that might have missed these prices.

Circuit City is selling the A3 for $149.99 and the A30 for $199.99.Excellent deals!!!!

Either I'm misunderstanding the OPs post or your reply but . . .

It would seem to me that if HD DVD players are not listed in the 90 day exception (above) then, by default, Costco's normal return policy does apply (which is -- return at any time if you're not satisfied) . . . right? So, what am I missing here?
At amazon. Still have these in my cart to watch the price drop. These are amazon direct. Not secondary vendors. Might snag an A30 if it hits $99.

Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player has decreased from $299.24 to $289.98

Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD Player has decreased from $198.22 to $179.98

Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD Player has decreased from $147.33 to $139.98
post #2357 of 8408
Correct... Sorry this ended up in the wrong place.

Yes, you can return any item not listed at any time.

Well....

I just returned a upconverter player 4 weeks ago....NO PROBLEMA....NO MANAGER....

Your supposition has little merit IMHO attempting to classify a DVD player as a COMPUTER???? And if you haven't noted, DVD players were NOT listed in their 90 day policy....

FWIW, EVERY DVD player I've returned has been defective either scratching up discs, or malfunctioning in one way or another. True their policy can be taken to the letter and is UNCONDITIONAL which clearly supports a cardinal retail supposition where the "CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!"

As it was when they initiated the new "90 day policy," product purchased prior to the inception date are "grandfathered in under the OLD POLICY" guidelines, about as fair as you can get!

Abuse as you've hinted is left for each to decide as it should be. Walmart has a similar policy HOWEVER it is left to the location managers discretion on a case by case basis.

When Costco initiated the new 90 policy, they also "DOUBLED" the manufacturers warranty for free, something NO OTHER RETAILER does. Also they created a Costco based concierge service as another benefit. Have you ever noted how expensive these extended warranties can be?

Finally, I picked up the new DVD player for $129 plus 6.5% sales tax, will have 7 new HD DVD's, and enjoy a lifetime money back / exchange guarantee vs. waiting for an item via the mail, not knowing if it will be damaged and must be returned with the hassle to get a return authorization, etc.

Instant possession goes a long way in my book....

So is Best Buy.
I'm going to wait until the A30 gets to $150 and then I'll pull the trigger.

I recently returned a 5 month old blu-ray player and they accepted it without question. All dvd players, as well as HD DVD and Blu-ray definetly carry the lifetime Costco warranty.

I must be missing something. Today's CC ad is showing the Toshiba A-3 @ $299.99 W/7 free discs. BB is listing the Toshiba A-30 for $399.99 W/7 free. Where are you seeing these under $200 prices?

Online. The ADs were planed and printed BEFORE Toshiba's big price cut.
New MSRPs are now...

A3 = 150
A30 = 200
A35 = 300

A35 was on back-order, I recieved the email, so I guess the A30 was meant to be!

Does Costco offer the free 7 DVD's as well? If yes, How can I get the 5 free DVD's by mail?

Thanks,

I took the plunge last week. 2 days before Warner Brothers made their announcement.

The deal I got at Amazon was the A3 for $179 and "10 free DVDs". 2 in the box, 3 from Amazon, plus the 5 Toshiba.

Today the A3 is selling for $139 and the A30 is $179.

But Amazon is not including its 3 free DVDs...so, what's that, $60?

So what I guesss. I just hope this format war never ends.
