Glad you pointed that out for us, the BBC version is about 70 minutes longer than the Discovery version

No problem. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I got an email from Best Buy saying I will be getting a $50 gift card for buying a HD-DVD player. I didn't even do anything. Id guess my Reward Zone gave them the info. I hope to get the card in time to buy a few HD-DVD's. Otherwise I will get a few BDs or a PS3 game.

+1. They have to be tracking these purchases through the rewards zone as there is no other way they have my email address.

Which is exactly what they said they would be doing when they made the initial announcement....I'm not sure why this surprises anyone.

I have several HD DVD players but never purchased one from BB and I received the same email stating I would be getting a $50 gift card.

That is strange.

Got that same BB email today. I checked their 'trade in' link and my Xa2, which I purchased from them for $75 open box display about a month ago, is worth $146 trade in!
Of course, I'll be keeping it

As time passes, I think the value of XA2's will rise considerably.

Darn, wish I had known. I'm sure it will still be good though.

Definitely had reward zone credit for 2 players in the 11/2 window, but haven't seen any sort of email yet... very, very weird. Are these personalized emails telling you how much you're getting, or just "Hey, we're doing this cool thing!" sort of emails?

Try High Def Digest for reviews of both sets.

I suspect it's just a standard "this is what we're doing" email. However, after the first few of those from BB, I opted out of email notifications, so I can't say for sure.

Dear Best Buy customer,

Our records show that you purchased an HD DVD player from Best Buy™.

Recently, Toshiba announced that they will no longer produce HD DVD players, and movie studios decided they will no longer release new movies in HD DVD.

At Best Buy, we are dedicated to making sure you always have the right technology for you. That is why we will be mailing you a Best Buy™ gift card in the upcoming weeks. If you haven't received your gift card by May 1, please call us at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289).

If you are interested in trading in your HD DVD player and HD DVDs, check out our technology trade-in service at BestBuyTradeIn.com where we will accept HD DVD hardware and software in exchange for a Best Buy gift card based on its market value.

We truly appreciate you as a customer. If you have further questions, please go to BestBuy.com/hddvd.

Interesting. I received a general email about the plan but not that one. Wonder if I should call, or just sit tight... (since I'm opted out of some emails as well, although not all-- I've never figured out quite what rhyme or reason I get emails from BB )

Anyone in the pleasant hill, cali Best Buy area - I will be returning my A-30 to the store. I paid $129 on February 28, so I got in for the 5 free DVDs but missed the $50 back. You can buy my open box return. It's upgraded to 1.3 firmware and used about 5 hours only. I was only using for upconverting and figure I'll get a cheaper one (probably blu) later when prices come down. Unless I go in and bitch about the $50 back and they give it to me, then I'll keep the $50 and the player and send for the free DVDs

I got my two $50.00 gift cards from BB today. Here in Canada you have to actually go into the store to get them, but thats OK. One good thing about the Canadian offer is that the only restriction is that it was purchased after January 1, 2007. That means the HD-A3 i just bought a week ago for a reduced clear out price qualified along with my HD-A2. Nice

I wish I could do that here in the states,it makes sense because I bought the player at my local store.

Nice!

Got my email as well. Checked trade-in on my A2s (I have two). A mere $44.00, which oddly enough is exactly what I paid for my 2nd A2-a refurb. 1st player was from BB during the 11/2/07 $99 sale. So it + the 7 free discs actually cost me about $50. Total player investment is still under $100.

Was curious as to trade in credit, but have no interest in giving up the players.

If anyone was waiting for Amazon to drop the price of an A35, you better start looking elsewhere. The price has gone up to $299.99.

Looks like they are getting scarce.

I may have a chance to get a brand new, never opened HD-XA2 from my dealer. What would be the maximum price I should be willing to pay for this machine? (I have a feeling he is asking for too much and I don't want to get burnt). Please respond to my question, I really need your help and feedback. Thank you.

Hard to say since they are going for $899 on Amazon. How much is he asking?
LOL @ 899. 300 max IMO. I guess it depends on how much it is worth to you.
I checked ebay and new XA2 around $700, used in the $350 to $400 range.
FYI to any Canadians taking BB up on their offer, don't be surprized if customer service has no clue what you are talking about. Just kindly point the way to bestbuy.ca and they should be able to find the rest from there.

I just had a Best Buy open close to me two weeks ago. During the Grand Opening, I was curious to know what their opening stock would be in terms of HD players. The A30 was the only HD-DVD player they had, everything else was BR, and it retailed at $99. They had 6 in stock.

Fast forward to today, and the A30 was not only out of stock, but it had a price increase to $129. The BR players were still fully stocked which kind of made me chuckle. I asked if more were on the way and they said yes, in a couple of days.

Anyhow, I'm not biased either way, but thought this was interesting from a retail standpoint.

Must have been some kind of special. When the big announcements came down the prices dropped to $100 for the A3, $130 for the A30, and $150 for the A35.

He wants $500 + tax (13%) but to me this sounds expensive.

Would an XA2 be worth for me given that I rarely watch standard DVDs? For HD DVDs, how would the XA2 compare with my A20 and my two A30s? After I will receive the $50 back from Best Buy, each A30 will have cost me $80 + tax. From $80 to $500 is a BIG difference. Is it, hence, worthwhile?...
Just throwing this out: has anybody that got in on the last round of $170 A35s from TigerDirect, via Amazon, actually received their players yet? I'm getting the dreaded backordered response from them...

Tell him to give you a call when it reaches $300. Save your money for BD or your next display.

Ebay buyers are stupid. I've bidding on HD-DVD's last couple of weeks, and have been outbid by people paying more than what the disk goes for new from Amazon. Weird! Also Ubid still has refurb XA2s for $299.00 plus shipping, with a 90 day warranty, but Ebayers are paying much more without a warranty.

The Tempe,Arizona(Tempe Marketplace) BB store has the A30 at $99 right now, new. They had about 6 on a shelf in front of the store. All of their HD DVDs are 50% off as well.
