Other than the 360 A0, there are no other HD DVD manufactures. thats why. Onkyo and ventuer are supposed to come out soon, but I don't think they are yet, and the Onkyo at least will be quite a bit more than $200.

If you look at the Black Friday Sears ad, it says "Available at most major stores and Sears.com. You could probably just buy it without waiting in line.

I haven't decided if I am going to get up and buy it online or pick it up that day.

If you have an HHGregg in your area it is still the best BF deal. It's what I plan on doing.

I almost did that at my local Sears. They had an A2 driving a 58" Panny plasma. I didn't have time to get it right then, so came back the next day. A different sales associate was trying to restart the player. He said the thing runs 12 hours a day 7 days a week, and had a tendency to freeze up every so often, so required reboots. I figured it wasn't worth the risk.

That might be a smart decision and I understand the reasoning, but I also wonder if it is because they've never bothered to update the firmware? I'm willing to bet that most places that have HD DVD players on display don't have them hooked up to a net connection and don't bother to do firmware updates with an iso CD. All of the listed problems might have gone away by that simple process. Most of us on this forum that got boxed A2s did the firmware update within 24 hours of unpacking it.

Anyone find great prices on HD-XA2? The best I've seen is at Amazon for $479. Seems like a good price but I'm always looking for something cheaper

Just found an A2 floor model, running, with no remote.
Was tempted, but hesitated due to some obvious risks.

I think you were smart. If the thing is running 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, it could have couple thousand hours on the drive (the only moving part) by the time you get it. That would be equivalent to 5 to 10 years of regular home use.

they said they will price match even after the sale price has ended.
and i specifically spoke about black friday.
this just seems a bit risky. you know these csr's are clueless.

I had no clue about this. So Toshiba is basically the only standalone HD DVD manufacturer? This really depicts how early on we are in this hidef format battle. Gosh...! I was clucless.

Yeah, thats thing with price matching - if they don't accept the BF price, then you're stuck with what you have at a higher rate.

I called Sears in Hackensack for A2's ($90) - every sears in N. NJ is sold out of them.

and extra $100 wont kill me, for pc of mind, a remote, 5 free movies(7 if its a A3). I wont mind the weaker optical, cuz i'm just gonna pick up a 2808ci.

i wouldnt hold my breath thinking that ANYONE will price match on BF or refund any amount you overpaid before BF even if it falls within the 30 day return or price match window. I wouldn't even try to order it online because there is no way they would give you the limited quantity price online. They would be sold out immediately and be backordered for ages.

find it at a sears if you can, thats about your only chance.

the BF add for Best Buy has the A3 listed for $199 ($100 off) with 300 and Bourne in the box and 5 more free HD flicks via mail in rebate. note sure if this a good enough deal for most, but thought i would pass it along.

circuit city is having a 3 day sale and HDDVD players are on sale!

I don't see why they won't match their price within the 30 days, even if it is BF. It's still price matching! Just in case they are being difficult, my A3 is still unopened, I will return it for a refund and tell them what I think about their price match guarantee!

Did I miss the sale price? $200 for an A2 and $279 for an A3 isnt considered a sale anymore.
