Outboard scaler for ReplayTV

I have an HDTV and its native resolution is 720p. Although I've been using a ReplayTV 5040 for years (love that commercial skip), last year I was forced to go to a Tivo Series III in order to record Hi-Def material. Not only does it do a very good job of that, but it also seems to have a much better internal scaler than the television or the ReplayTV itself. Because of that I have pretty much forsaken the ReplayTV because the picture looks so bad on the HDTV.

But recently I was watching a hockey game that I had to record on the ReplayTV due to some weird circumstances and while the picture looked like crap, I had totally forgotten how nice it is not to have deal with any commercials.

So that got me thinking: Could I get and outboard scaler that would do a passable job of converting the standard def signal coming from the ReplayTV to the 720p required by the HDTV. After doing some poking around on the web I found the DVDO iScan series but was pretty shocked by the prices involved. Then I found the Geffen Home Theater scaler which seemed a little more reasonable at $450, but that's still pretty steep for a little convenience.

So my question is are there any reasonably priced outboard scalers out there that will do a passable job of scaling Standard Def output to 720p. I fully realize "passable" is subjective, but it should be at least as good as the Tivo Series III.

I felt my question was more of a generalized scaling question and didn't really have to do w/ReplayTV specifically. I was trying to get some answers about decent scaling from Standard Def to Hi Def for something approaching a reasonable price.
