Toshiba HD-A2/Hitachi 50v500 HDMI to DVI Upscaling?

Hey guys,

I took advantage of Walmart's sale on the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player. Watched Transformers HD-DVD and it was great! But, of course, I have a problem. I have a Hitachi 50v500 and it has a DVI-HDCP ( 24 pin digital DVI ). I bought a Philips 6' Video Cable, 19 pin HDMI (M) - DVI (M) and when I play regular dvd's, I get a message that states that it does not support analog for upconversion. So I'm confused. Shouldn't I have the problem with the HD-DVD's if my tv is not HDCP compatable? Is there another converter cable that I should use to get the upconversion??

Thanks,

Jim

that's strange -

I have an Hitachi 50v500 and had a D2 ( an XA2 now )
which played everything without any problems

the A2 will upconvert very well over HDMI to DVI and our TV is most certainly HDCP

I wish I could help more ...

Maybe its the converter cable that I have?? The one I bought was a Philips 6' Video Cable, 19 pin HDMI (M) - DVI (M). Do you have the hdmi going straight into an hdmi to dvi converter? I'm assuming that the cable converter that I bought did not have the right number of pins!!

Perhaps if you could tell me which product you have, that would work?

Thanks a million!!

Previously ,
I had a (free cheap Oppo ) HDMI-DVI cable directly from the HD-D2(A2)
into my Hitachi DVI port - Video 1

now,
I have an XtremeMac HDMI cable ($20 Apple store) from my XA2 ,
into my receiver (Panasonic XR700),
and the (free Oppo) HDMI-DVI cable out from my receiver
into my Hitachi DVI port

I admit I'm stumped , not sure what could be the problem .

I can't understand why , it would be mentioning anything about analog when you are hooked up digitally and why only SD DVD ???
( I have never seen that message before , by the way)
on a side note , I have used the cheapest ($50) Radio Shack brand HDMI-DVI cable before with great success and they have a packaging that opens without any cutting or damage to the box
.,plus they have a 30 day return policy - you might want to at least check and see if it is a cable problem ( I have used very cheap and expensive cables with no difference )

just for kicks, when you play a HD DVD , what does your TV say when you hit the info button on the remote ?? Just curious .....
( mine says something like ...Vid 1, digital , 720p etc. ) and how is your audio hooked up - do you have any other cables coming out of the A2 ??

For the record , I have had my TV for 4 years , hooked up and adjusted in many ways and I'm leaning towards an A2 or cable problem in this situation . With my original bulb still going strong , I have had the light engine replaced under warranty ( and while I love the pic quality I absolutley hate the fan noise ) I have had no other issues with the Hitachi 50v500. Then again . I've never had an issue with my D2 either - Doh !

Its gotta be the cable. The dvi end of it has to be dvi-a! I'll try some other cables this weekend!

I'll check the display tonight. I only watched 1 hd-dvd and it looked and sounded incredible!!

I'll keep you posted!

Thanks,

Jim

Oh yea, I forgot to mention , make sure you have updated the (A2) HD DVD players firmware to version 2.7

I believe there was an issuse with HDMI to DVI in the early days , before more recent firmware updates
