Why so few DVD+HDDVD discs?

Any idea why there are so few HD-DVD releases that play on regular DVD players when there's good options for doing so? I honestly think this is a bigger problem for me adopting HD-DVD (or Blu-Ray) than the format wars.... I can't quite get over having to pay nearly 2x for the disc for it to only work on one of my six systems

This will be reticified very soon with the introduction of the TL Twin - 3 layers - 1st is SD and the next 2 are HD - all on one side - will hold a 130 minute movie.

It just got final approval from the DVD Forum. Expect to see it being used next year, with the addition of the DL Twin - 2 layers - one of each - holds a 95 minute movie.

because they're too expensive, because they don't always work in all players, and because it's easier to damage either side with small fingerprint scratches......
