Please help with pc audio to my receiver!!!

my fiance's parent were kind enough to get us this great new laptop, and at 1600 bucks, it seems to be absolutely loaded with technology. However, I'm stunned at its lack of audio output options. Outside of connecting it to my receiver via the mini headphone jack to a pair of rca's, I think I'm sol!!!

As far as I can tell, no toslink, coax, or hdmi!!!! Am i just stuck with the mini plug or is usb somehow an option (i have no idea)? This of course limits my surround decoding to pro logic with the rca's!!!?

please help!!

You are so in luck.

I don't think i've ever found such an exact solution, that is well reviewed to a random problem i've looked at here on AVSforum.

now my "temporary" question is this: what will likely yield a better picture: a dvd through my ps2 via s-video, or a dvd through my pc via vga-vga?

Doesn't the above product simply encode DD or DTS on the fly? AFAIK, this doesn't all you to pass PCM (wav) or DD, does it?

if you're right, that could be a problem. I guess, I'm still shocked that this brand new 1600 dollar cpu doesnt have hdmi.

Definitely the pc via VGA. just ask yourself, which cable supports a higher resolution S-Video or VGA?

I'll do passthrough, but it also supports DD Live and DTS Connect, which what those do is re-encode ALL audio into 5.1 DD or DTS surround sound, so that your receiver can then de-code it.

For example if you have a video game that your playing and is in surround sound, but in EAX.

This USB sound card will on the fly re-encode the EAX multichannel audio from the pc game, into 5.1 DD or DTS.

Also just because a PC costs $1600 doesn't mean it automatically is going to have the latest and greatest everything. You can buy a Kia for $50k but that doesn't mean its gonna have a V16 lambo engine in it.

HDMI is still new to the pc world, it'll take a while before manufactures start supporting HDMI out of pcs. Sure you can find HDMI video cards but that is more for the DIY market right now.

Do those USB converters allow for pass through of native sampling rates of music files @ 44.1, or do they pass everything as 48kHz?
