Question about on-line game play with XBox 360 or PS3

Thread Starter
A friend of mine and I have done on-line gaming on PC's for a number of years. We are considering a switch to console gaming using either an XBox 360 and/or a PS3 with our new HDTV's.

Is it possible to play multiplayer games on either format using direct connections between our 2 machines. For instance, could we do a co-op mode game using a direct connection rather than going thru the XBox Live or Sony's on-line servers?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well first off I cant speak for the PS3 because I only have a 360 but im sure its supported just as well. As for the 360 its called system link. Just run a cat5 from system to system and it pretty much auto detects everything. Only games that support co-op of course i.e. Gears of War, Halo, Team Fortress 2.

As for switching from PC's to consoles. I used to be an avid PC gamer and built a few high end sytems spending close to three thousand on the last one. I recently adopted console gaming and I can say I dont miss my PC much. The whole Xbox Live network is sweet as cake. Its alot like X-fire except it works, tells you when your friends are on, you can set up a private chat durring online play, invite people to your games, etc. Graphically not bad considering what it costs to build a new gaming PC and having to F@*K with Vista. Hands down I dig consoles now. You can get a new 360 with HDMI for 350 clams at amazon.com with no shipping or sales tax. I dont mean to sound like a fan boy, but easier online play, no drivers to mess with, games work the first time and every time, decent graphics, and you can get naked and drink beer on your couch while you play. its a good thing.

You can even connect the original xbox to the 360 for old games. You can connect ps2 to a bc ps3. I love system link co op games. It is a blast. There are many more xbox and 360 system link games then on the ps2/ps3. I think the ps2 has 10 lan games in all. The 360 has a good library.

I would suggest 2 copies of halo 3 for a good co op experience. Gow is also a good choice. I like rts on the pc, all others are on the console.
