Nameplate came standard on my STs. I think it adds a nice touch.

We did not originally include the nameplates on the SongTowers because we were trying to keep the cost as low as humanly possible. But many people wanted to pay extra and those who did not get them seemed to want them.

We got a few comments that nowhere on the speakers did it say where they came from or who made them.

So we made a decision to include them on all SongTowers and have been doing so for about a month now.

I agree that the name plate gives the speaker a nice touch. It's proud to display that these well crafted speakers are made right here in the United States by the one and only Jim Salk!

If Jim is going to be at the AudiKarma show with a set of STs and HT3s, I'll have to make it over there too!

Thanks for the information Jim. I'll be looking for the nameplates when my speakers arrive.

I live at Holly Lake Ranch, a golf community about 40 miles north of Tyler in the section of E. Texas called the "Piney Woods". In other words, in the middle of nowhere!

The Song Towers look interesting. Has anyone that has heard or owns the Song Towers compared them to anything in the Dynaudio Focus lineup? I have the Focus 140s and have thought about moving up to the Contour line (1.4 or 3.4) but thought I would explore some options.

Thanks, Bill

Make sure to check out the "Nuance, Funkmonkey, ChicagoTC Speaker Reviews": http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1014749

Some of that document is based on reviews in the "Speakerquest" thread that does look at some Dynaudio speakers (and Salk and many others).

Thanks for the links. I will read through them to see how the two speaker line compare.

I haven't heard the Salks yet but did audition Dynaudio Focus 220s. Please don't take my comments in the thread personally. I'm convinced something was wrong with the speakers I heard

TC,

I have not looked through thread yet but if you listened to the 220s and did not like them at all I would not be the least bit offended. Speakers are so subjective to someones tastes and so many other variables. But I still like to hear someones thoughts good or bad especially compared to other quality speakers. I only get aggravated if someone says a speaker (or any component) sucks but has never heard or seen it.

Ladies and Gentlemen -
Please remember Dennis in your thoughts and prayers as he goes in for surgery this week to have a defective heart valve replaced. We're all routing for you, Dennis!

So this past weekend my wife and I have went through a bunch of different woods and finishes. The Brazilian rosewood is very expensive so we've opted to go for a similar look but will use a less costly wood (Santos Rosewood with a little red dye added). My wife is still deciding whether or not we should get the SongCenter right away as well, but we're definitely go to pull the trigger on the Song Tower's. As for the look, wood and finish, here's a good depiction of what we'll get (but hopefully with the nameplates in the back instead of the front, it that's doable):

Nice! Congrats Nuance. I am a huge fan of Rosewood myself.

I would also like to see the SongTowers in a Crotch Mahagony.

Just a head's up for those who are interested.

Dennis Murphy is undergoing heart surgery today. For those would would like to send a card or flowers, he is at the Suburban Hospital, 8600 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814.

I will pass along any information I receive regarding the outcome of his surgery and his recovery.

Those speakers look wonderful Nuance.

I was planning on getting Definitive Technology speakers, but they recently raised their prices on most of their line, so I decided to look elsewhere. I am glad that I did!

I really like these Salk speakers. I plan on getting the SongTowers x4 and Center. I love the look of Burlwood, so I will get the custom veneer. Unfortunately, I am in the process of trying to sell / buy a home so I can't get them now. I figured on the 4 SongTowers vs. the surrounds since there is only a $200 difference from the SS IIs and the Towers. I like to listen to a lot of 5 channel music, so I figure that matching the speakers exactly will be the best route. I would get STs x5 if I could use a vertical center.

Any arguments against doing this and getting the surrounds?

I have been reading up on these speakers this weekend, but I haven't seen much feedback on the subs. Does anyone here have one?

I'm really glad to hear your good news. Santos Rosewood looks great. I installed nameplates on my STs after Jim sent them. It should be easy to mount them on the back of the cabinet.

Now you have to settle in for the long wait...

Everyone (and I mean just about every review I've EVER seen about Salk speakers) always talks about the long wait. How long of a wait is it typically? I mean if I have to wait 6 months for speakers I'd be upset, but 2 months probabyl not. I can imagine being antsy, but how long is the wait really?

I'd love to see some comments on this. Also does it make a difference in the wait time if you were to pick the ST's in a standard veneer color? Does Jim have any "on the shelf"?

When I bought my STs, I ordered them last August, and it took until Labor Day weekend for them to arrive. That was a little over 3 weeks. I understand that there are qute a few orders now, and the wait time might be longer. I don't think it will be as long as 2 months, but Jim Salk should answer that, not me .

Apparently, Jim has a lot of unfinished cabinets built and ready to veneer. And yes, he probably has the standard veneers (curly cherry, curly walnut, mahogany, curly maple and oak) in stock and ready to apply. The custom finishes may take longer.

I was kidding Nuance about waiting, because he has drawn out his speakerquest for such a prolonged time.

I assume the prices listed on the web site do not include shipping costs. Can anyone from the SE Pa area comment on shipping costs for a pair of Song Towers & a Song Center?

Also, I have no room for something the size of the Song Surround. Can anyone suggest a good match? Multi-channel music is a priority. Something the size of the Ascend 200SE would be perfect.

This Wed. will be three weeks since i visited Jim and ordered my STs. At the time he only had a pair of black and a pair of maple that were not claimed. I think someone on this thread got the maple set. So, as far as i know if you want black you might be able to get them right away.

Jim told me it would be roughly three weeks for mine. From what i saw he was working on some HT3's, 2 or 3 sets of STs, a SongCenter, and a set of SongSurrounds. The day before i arrived he had gotten three more orders for STs. From reading this thread i would say he's added quite a few more orders since my visit. I think orders go out as they come in, meaning that the type of veneer you choose won't bump you up in line. You should just call him and see what the wait time is now (but don't take up too much of his time, because i want my speakers soon!).

I figure on picking mine up in a week or two (fingers crossed).

Doug.

Yes, shipping is extra. To ship my pair of STs to Gaithersburg, MD cost a little over $87. You are a bit closer to Detroit, but you will be getting the SongCenter.

The SongSurround I is 13" tall × 8" wide × 10" deep. The 200 SE is 11"×6.5"×6.38". Are you sure the SSI is too big?

When I started corresponding with Jim late last August about ST's...he had 6 pairs cut out, four of which were spoken for. I asked Jim if I could come over to audition a pair, and he said he'd have a pair finished late Saturday. I asked if I could come audition them on Sunday (9/2), and he graciously allowed me to do so. I left with that pair, so my 'wait' was 2 days.
I'd agree with baumer that any wait probably isn't excessively long, but the sooner you order the quicker you'll get them. When Jim isn't busy (when is that!!) perhaps he can chime in and advise you of the current wait time.
I'm not overly concerned with the wait time as I have only put down a deposit. I don't plan to order the rest of the package and confirm for probably a few months. I'm going to be moving into a house in the fall, and will want them then. So sorry for steering you guys in the wrong direction.

My reason for commenting was the fact that SO MANY PEOPLE complain about the wait times they make it seem like it's many months before they get something. I doubt anyone is confused into thinking that they're not ordering custom speakers from Jim, and I figured they would know there was a wait. Jim obviously isn't sitting around not doing anything. I suspect his business may outgrow what he can adequately provide so I want to get mine soon enough that he doesn't outsource anything!

It used to be a 9 month wait for HT3's, it is now between 60-90 days.

I doubt there will be any kind of outsource although he may have to call in people who are not as experienced as he is to put things together. I don't know. But I can tell you I placed my deposit on March 2 for a pair of STs in Walnut. He has to stain them anyway so I asked for a tint darker than standard but no exotic color or wood or special order - just the standard walnut stained a bit darker than normal.

On March 13, I emailed for an update and Jim said the speakers were in sanding stage and would be ready by the next week. When I did not hear anything I emailed once again on March 31 and he said he was not happy with the finish and would spray them again and that the final assembly would take place the next day (April 1). That is the last I've heard.

So, IF this is normal and IF they arrive next week I would tell anyone that asks this question to expect at least six weeks from time of deposit to delivery for anything but black.

Even though yours are taking longer than mine did last summer, I felt the same during that time span between ordering them and receiving them. The waiting is intense, but it is most definitely worth it. (I say this smugly , as I anticipate going home soon so I can listen my SongTowers for another evening. I've had them since September and the novelty and wonderfulness has not worn off.)

Yes, Jim is a perfectionist, and I doubt he would be satisfied outsourcing to another cabinet maker. But if you wanted some speakers, RIGHT NOW, you would have gone to Best Buy and picked up whatever they had in stock.

Hang in there, you can wait a little longer. Its worth it .
