Backlighting a projector screen

I've read a little about backlighting TVs and saw a couple nice pictures of home theater screens that were backlighted. It seemed like a nice affect.

Do folks just use rope lighting? Does it look cheesy when it is done? Just curious.

I was thinking about using a paint screen (Goo maybe), but building out on a 4x8 platform and backlighting the platform. I saw some mention of LEDs, but I'm not sure what kind.

Thanks for any info.

I was just thinking about doing the same thing you were (installing rope lighting to my existing screen) but also putting it on a dimmer so I could adjust it to the best light setting to enhance the picture quality. I have a 100" dia. screen I built with plans off ebay. The border is black synthetic velvet so it's not as expensive as cotton velvet, but just as black. It looks very professional, so I thought about running the rope lighting just around the inside border of the velvet so it can't be seen. Anyone else done this to their's?

Daniel, A dimmer isn't a bad idea. I didn't think of that. That's probably a good idea. I thought rope lighting just plugged into a socket though. Do they have dimmers for sockets?

yellowblanket, do you think it makes any difference? The picture looks good. Part of the interest in the lighting is to stop people from wanting to turn on a light in order to do something, like get popcorn, etc..

Do you find that you still turn on a light during a movie to do a task?
