720p Projector and blu-ray

I'm considering jumping into HDM (High Def media) soon -- to better take advantage of my 114 inch diag. screen. However, I have a 720p projector (the Epson 810). I won't be upgrading the PJ for a couple of years (as I bought it about 6 months ago).

In theory, which should give you the better picture on a 720p projector -- sending 1080i or 720p from a High Definition Media player?

Also, I keep reading about 1080p/24 or 1080p/60. If you have a 720p projector -- does that matter?

Is there a dramatic difference using HDM with a 720p (as opposed to 1080p) projector -- and in comparison to standard def DVDs (I have an Oppo 981)?

I have an Infocus 7205 (720p) projector and a PS3. It may be my eyes, but I *think* it looks better with the PS3 set to output 1080i than 720p. It isn't much of a difference, if at all.

Oh, I'll add that there is a considerable amount of difference between Blu Ray disks and standard DVDs on my 720p projector.

Basically, you just have to compare between 720p and 1080i and see what you think is better...it just depends on how well your pj deals with the non-native resolutions....I have a 720p pj and both an HDdvd player(A2) and a PS3...I send 720p out from the A2 and 1080p/24 from PS3...My Optoma HD70 accepts a 1080p/24 signal.

I have never owned a 1080p native pj but there is a big difference between HI-def dvd's and standard dvd's on any resolution pj IMO.

What happens if you try and output 1080p -- do you just get a blank picture?

I have a 720p projector which is the mits hd1000u paired with my hd a2 & panny bd10a they are both connected via hdmi. For me I prefer 1080i than 720p but honestly I can't barely tell difference between 720p or 1080i they both look great to me. But I prefer 1080i set up. Goodluck.

My gears:
HD1000U
hd a2
panny bd10a
Onkyo 705
polk audio rm7500
2 rear channels (cambridge soundworks
pioneer dvl-888 (karaoke/dvd player/laser disc player)
106'' screen

caesar1 - turns out I had never tried 1080p because I thought my projector could could only handle 1080i inputs. I checked the manual and it can handle 1080p so I changed the setting and did a quick comparison on Chicken Little Blu Ray for 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Maybe 1080p looks the best, but it's more likely just in mind. Little difference, if any, between all of them with my setup to my eyes.

I think -- maybe I'm wrong -- that 1080p or 720p sent to your display would be pretty much identical -- as it would remain in progressive (not have to be de-interlaced). But both would be displayed as 720p of course -- since that's the native resolution.

What size screen do you have?

92 inches.

Most 720p projectors that accept 1080p input just downscales it to 720p (some even to 540p) from exerience the scaling is not as good as done in the player. For most PJ it is best to set your PS3 or dvd player to the native 720 of the projector... some projectors convert 1080i well to 720 so that you won't notice much a difference but since HDDVD and BLURAY are encoded natively in progressive why would you want to convert it to interlaced and then back to progressive? If you just use 720p output you skip one conversion step.

I've got a DT-400 Sharp 720P Projector. I've got an A1 and an A2 and a PS3. All of them on the latest firmware. Can't explain it, but 1080i looks best on all sources. I actually went through comparing this about a week ago.

I have a similar setup 720P projector (Mitsu HD100U) and I was undecided for a while... So I simply left it on 1080i. However, the other night I was watching a SD movie upscaled through PS3 and it was a little jumpy in spots. The chip in my projector was not de-interlacing the 1080i content and downsccaling fast enough in certain spots, making the image bounce around a little bit. After changing my output to 720P, problem went away.

Anybody using PS3 with the Panny PT-AX100U?

1) In practice, when watching BD discs, i set my 720p projector (a sanyo Z3) to 1080i. the picture looks better that way, but as others note this may vary from projector to projector. So just try it both ways with yours.

2) I also have a 1080p television, and BD discs look better on it than on the 720p projector, BUT they still look GREAT on the projector, MUCH better than standard DVDs.

I very much enjoy watching BD discs on my 720p projector and bet you would too.

I suspect that's also due to the size of your 1080p screen compared to your PJ screen.

HD TV and standard def DVDs look better (sharper) on my 50 inch plasma than my 114 inch screen. But that's because flaws are revealed more in a large screen I think.

I would send in either 1080i or 1080p. Most pjs that are 720p seem to get a sharper picture when 1080i is sent in. Since it accpets 1080p (like my outdoor pj sanyo Z5) if you like it keep it there. I send in 1080p into the Z5 and after plenty of A and B comparisons it looks better to me...

I have a Infocus 7205 and a PS3 as well. I have done a little bit of A/B with 720p vs. 1080i and to me the 720p yielded a slightly softer picture. So I'm opted for the 1080i output. Since the the 7205 uses the pixelworks deinterlacer <---Not so great) (only in certain situations including when receiving a 1080p signal) I didn't give it much testing.

How are you skipping a conversion step, if the disc is mastered in 1080P? From my experience with my setup, Sending 1080P from my PS3 to my Optoma HD70, looks better than either 720P or 1080I. This way there is only one conversion occuring at the projector.

I am. It's set for 1080p/24 and paired with Sony's entry level DG-910 hdmi receiver.

So, basically are we saying we should match the resolution of the player with the disc, except for SD DVD, which you want to upscale from 480i to 720P(if you have a 720P projector).
