Best choice sub $500 receiver?

What would be my better choice between the Onkyo TX-SR605 ($469) and the Sony STR DG910 ($424)? I have a Sony SXRD 50KDS-A2000, Toshiba A2 HD-DVD, SA- 8300HD cable box, and a Sony upscaling DVD player. I don't need upscaling in the receiver because I think the Sony SXRD does a very good job of upscaling and de-interlacing on its own. I will likely use the receiver in 5 channel mode without a subwoofer at least initially. My side speakers are Cerwin-Vegas with 15" woofers.

Since you say you don't need any upscaling capability and you don't need the ability to unpack high def audio bitstreams since the A2 can't send them anyway, I'd say DG910. It will handle the lossless audio PCM from the A2, has three HDMI inputs (vs 2 for 605) and transcodes composite and component analog video signals to HDMI without scaling.

Thanks for the reply. Could be that the DG810 will do as well if I can get along without the on-screen menues.

If you go with the DG810 you'll also give up the transcoding of composite and component analog video signals to HDMI. It may or may not be important to you but that feature does allow you to connect all sources to the DG910, have just one cable (HDMI) going to the TV and do all your source switching using the DG910.

Thanks. Looks like I'll go with the DG910. However, I will still need a few more cables. I need to have the TV fuctional without turning on the receiver (WAF) so the HD8300 will keep its component connection to the TV and I'll run the HDMI to the 910 (we don't need suround sound for the evening news). I will also need an SPDIF audio cable from the TV back to the receiver for the times when I want to watch network TV OTA using the TV's very good internal tuner.

Picking up the 910 from CC today (last one in stock in my area).

Got it. Very satisfied so far.
