My cable saga continues... The moto box they sent me when I upgraded my account looked to be vintage 2005 or 2006. I wasn't too distressed that it didnt have HDMI, but I couldn't get it activated. Guy came to 'fix' things, couldn't get it to work, and brought a new box, but it was NOT a hi def box. So, back to the truck he went. He came back with a much smaller, much more recent (and underconfigured ) rng110 (pace, I think) that's their newest and grooviest entry. Activation was fine, but trying to hook up the peripherals was a bitch. There are such limited output options -- no SVideo (my 2160 is suffering mightily); HDMI and component out (but no additional audio out, so I guess I will need to get a splitter to use Video out and Component out at the same time. I temporarily swapped cables and now have the HDMI going out of the rng to tv and out via standard video to the maggie. I have the maggie connected to tv by component cable. I split the coax (I have a strong signal now - and added a drop amp so it's fine on that score) and sent one coax branch to the cable box and the other to the maggie, using the passthrough RF to the tv as backup antenna input for the television. I guess that's ok for the few channels I can get with QAM tuner on the maggie, but I'm pretty sure the signal is less wonderful from cable box. The amp helps beef it up a bit, but I think svideo would be a lot better. So, here's the question - would one of those component to Svideo converters folks are talking about do the trick here? I'm asking partly bec of picture quality, but also because for the first time EVER I got a "this channel cannot be recorded" and I'm pretty sure it's due to the HDMI connection on the RNG110. It was a repeat of HOUSE, for heaven's sake, not Pay Per View. Jeesh. So, it seems to be undermining my recording capabilities on that unit. I have others, so it's not a critical issue -- and it is more convenient to have a smaller box in the living room (the other broken one was like a battleship) . Would swapping all HDMI out for component *(using component from box to tv as well as from maggie to tv) help undermine their evil scheme? Or, would the component to svideo adapter do the trick? All I want to do is be able to use my recording equipment the way I always have in the past, and every step of the way they are making it more and more difficult to do that. Picture is ok now, QAM (what's left) is feeding maggie, so I have at least some chance at recording those stations ok, but trying to get the cable recordings up to usable levels, as well. Any suggestions?
