You can do this easily on the channels that you can tune in without using the cable box. All you have to do is set up timer recordings on the Magnavox. The channels that require the cable box to view will require more interaction by you to record.

Some cable boxes will allow you to set program reminders or set a recording event even if the cable box doesn't have a built in DVR. These settings normally will change the channel on the cable box at the appropriate time, but usually won't turn on a cable box that is turned off. You would still need to program the Magnavox timer record settings to record at the correct time on the correct input.

If you can't set the cable box to change the channels for you, you will have to manually change the channels.

Cox cable box has 2 a/v outputs, 1 s-video, 1 digital audio out, and 1 coax "screw in" input and output.

Are the "2 a/v outputs" the Red and White audio outputs, or two separate video outputs?

How is your cable box connected to your TV now?

Yes, it seems they either arrive DOA or fail soon after. I previously got a WD5000AVVS 500GB for the 2160A and it was recognized by the 2160A for only the first Skip079 and few minutes record. Thereafter it said "Huh, what hard drive?" Had to return it and absorb the shipping and restocking fee.

Hope to have better results with the Hitachi.

The a/v plugs in the back are 2 sets of yellow/ red/ white.
The entire setup including cable box is exactly the way the diagram
Shows in the main forum. I clicked on sketch 3 "cable with box"
In the setup/ connections page. Coax to mag in, mag out to cable box
In, cable box out to tv in. Then I used the y/r/w plugs just as shown in
The sketch. I looked at the Ken.F thread again and I think I might
Try that.

Have you tried pressing the PS/IS button on remote, bottom right, 2nd button up (might have to be playing a DVD at the time)?

If that doesn't change back to Interlaced and a visible pic, try pressing and holding the SETUP button for more than 3 sec while playing... that's the Mag way of switching PS off, so might not work on a Polo?

If all else fails, just connect to a modern HDTV to get into the menu system?
wajo: Thanks, I haven't tried the PS/IS (I forgot it was there on the remote). I'll try this and get back to you. Thanks again for quick reply in the wee hours.

wajo: Unfortunately, the PS/IS button didn't resolve the problem even with DVD loaded and running. My HDTV is SONY Bravia which is where I'm currently connected. I'm exasperated!!! Thanks again.

Good Day,

On the 2160 twice I have recorded a sporting event and edited out the commercials. Then I high speed dubbed it to a DVD (tried both + and - R DVDs). On testing the DVD by playing on the 2160 and other DVD players, the sound will play on about half the DVD but no sound (picture still good) on the other half.
However, the sound will play if the DVD is played in a computer.
I was wondering what could cause this and is there any way to prevent or correct it. This has only happened twice out of many recordings and Dubs.

I have had 2 of these players for over a year now and they are awesome and so is this website. Such great info and help. Thanks!!

1. What blank DVDs are you using, and have you switched barnd/type recently?

2. Can you ckeck the spot on the HDD original where the DVD stops playing the audio and see if it's at or very near one of your edit points?

I use Sony + and - R and sometimes HP +r.
The audio does stop at one of the edit points.

Thanks for the links. They help me decide to buy this and glad I did!

Some time ago, there were ALL KINDS of problems with commercials and copy protected music, which messed with recording and playback. That, or some other glitch, *might* be causing the problem you're having now.

If your DVDs weren't Finalized, you'd prob. be able to cut a few frames off each end of the previous cut at that edit point and get rid of any residual CP'd audio with a new dub.

You might also consider getting better DVDs than HP. Some recommendations are here.

Thank you sir,
I usually always use Sony. It does seem to only happen when I delete commercials and rarely happens.
I probaby will make a copy with commercials and not finalize, then take the commercials out and check it out that the sound is OK, so if not I still have the original if needed could finalize.
I still have it on the HD so I will try further editing and see what happens.

It is interesting that the sound still plays on a computer.

Thanks again!

Dear Joe,

Thank you for kind comment.
As I moved to another states, I could not appear here in few weeks.

I wish I can support again to a person who has technical trouble.
In this time, I aimed to Freeze issue as my target.

If anybody has trouble to use or meets strange failure, please let me know.
I am not sure if I can solve all but I want to investigate.

Thank you for all users.

Moving is not fun. Update the UserCP with your new state.
Freeze issue is important. Good luck.

Is the coax pass thru in these units bi-directional? If not, do not put the cable box 2nd. If you do, things like on demand and the guide will not work. The cable box needs to talk back to the head end.

It's about time.

YES, and earlier this month, a Texas judge also reopened DishTV's 2005 suit against Tivo. (Maybe DishTV can get back the $300 million they had to pay Tivo, back in 2005)

At the Magnavox, the issue dissapears if you use the Rapid play button, then switch to normal speed.

But now I face another problem: I'm trying to edit a maggy file (VOB/MPG) file with Premiere CS3 that is well dubbed (High) an finalized on a 8x Verbatim DVD.

Premiere worked fine with many files dubbed from the Maggy to a SONY RW- DVD, but with DVD-R all that I get are errors.

Is that a common issue? For worst I checked the files with Ultraedit (hex editor) and the head - beginning of the DVD-RW files are diferents to the DVD-R, which begins with DVDVIDEO-VTS, but is unreadable for Premiere.

Any ideas? As always thanks.

Could this be the diff. between the -RW being formatted and the -R not?

profhat -

Recently I read that Adobe had confirmed there were problems within Premiere regarding handling of certain video formats, such as AVI. (Sorry, I don't remember the specific details.)

Reportedly, they now have fixes for those Premiere issues. You may want to check Adobe support, to see if any of those fixes apply to the issues your experiencing.

I posted a question on this forum on 2/19/11 and got helpful answers from Ken F. I picked up the Mag this morning from Walmart and hooked it up to my cable box and new Panasonic TV, using L1 and AV cable for the input to the Mag from the cable box, and HDMI from the Mag to the TV. (I purposely slaved the Mag to the cablebox). I set it for 16:9 and 1080p. Pretty good picture but one question: why do I have the black bars on the top and bottom when viewing through the Mag? I'm talking about regular programs broadcast in HD like NBC and CBS as well as movies on HBO which completely fill the screen when watched directly through the cable box. I can only get rid of the bars by using the TV remote's zoom setting. Appreciate and advice on this. Thanks.

Check out this help file section on recording from a STB/box, and the "Converters" section below. You prob. have a Motorola box, all of which automatically letterbox their output from Composite or S-Vid.

If you put the 515 1st on the coax and scanned for Cable (Analog/Digital) channels, you most likely have some natural widescreen program you could record, while maintaiing the line connection to the box for scrambled channels. If you order PPV/VOD thru the cable box, you'd need a bidirectional splitter on the incoming cable coax with one output to the box and one to the 515. See Sketch 3 here.
It's your cable boxes fault, not the 515. Most cable boxes only output a postage stamp output from their SD outputs. As you've noted you can use zoom on your TV but that reduces picture quality. To get full screen SD you'll need one of these devices, which also has a benefit of removing any pesky CP

If your TV is cutting off the left and right sides of the picture when using the zoom try setting the HDMI mode to 480p.

I'm not sure, but the guide definitely works. Everything has been
Running good so far. I have my channels that are in the lower
Range; 1-125 recording on input 1 and I am able to watch
Whatever I want on the cable box with the Tv input while the mag
Records. Now I just Have to figure out how to edit my recordings.
Thank u very much to everyone that put time into helping
Me and everyone else.

Thank you to all who replied to my question about the black bars top and bottom. I will see what works for my setup.
