I'm feeling a little guilty. Today I received and set up my second 515 from Amazon that I've bought in the last month. This last one was the second to the last in their stock. You might be patient and wait a while because you have to pay sales tax at Walmart (depending on where you live).

The tv was connected to an antenna in case cable went out, plus I could watch a 4th show live via OTA.

I now have the 3576 connected to OTA only as a backup.

The amplifier is at the antenna with the power injector at the back of the tv/3576. 50 ft RG6 quad shield between amplifier and injector. High quality 2 way non powered splitter connected to injector. 3 ft RG6 quad shield, 1 to TV, 1 to 3576.

The thing is Samsung tuners are some of the best and it appears the 3576 has one of the worst. I had no problem with the analog or QAM tuner when using cable.

Looks like you've pretty much covered all the bases.

Have you tried switching RF inputs between the TV & 3576? Did you note any change in the 3576's performance? Also, a direct connection from power injector output, before it's connected/injects into the passive splitter?

As you stated earlier, if the missing OTA stations are low-powered (analog or digital) about the only thing one can do is install a better directional antenna array or install an antenna rotator if station transmitter/antenna is more than ±60 degrees off your antenna's fixed path, or.......($$$$) both.

If your on good terms with your local TWC service rep, they often carry test equipment which is capable of giving a readout of a specific channels signal strength.
(ah....Didn't you mention earlier, something about a cable reception problem?)

Wish I could be of more help.

You can "Checkout with Amazon" at J&R. That's how I bought my refurb 515.

But our engineer doubts the reliability of the data.

I recommend;

Does unit ever search digital channels for time?
Does unit ever use subchannels for time?
Does unit search disabled analog (turned off) channels for time?
If digital channel is set, does unit use xx.1 or search all sub-channels?

Thank you.

My bad analog channel is only bad Monday to Friday. On weekend auto search found a less bad channel I would like to use. If I can find it.

Oh I sure remember those- I went through three different VCRs that purported to have auto clock set (via PBS signals) before realized that they were always FUBAR. So I developed a permanent "VCR user clock checking" habit whenever setting up a timer recording....

BTW, I set my new 515 to auto clock set OFF, and checked it against the STB time signal after one week: a drift of 1.25 seconds!! Oh my, that means my DVR will be FIVE SECONDS SLOW after a month, LOL. A whole minute a year... I think I can live with that.

I also have the 515 plugged into an APC UPS for extra protection & backup. It was one of the few things that was untouched 10 days ago after a nearby lightning strike that fried two telephone handsets, an exterior cable TV splitter, and my Internet modem; and disrupted my air conditioning, landline, alarm system, and irrigation timer.

Have you considered installing a "Whole House" surge protector?

I have one of the wired "whole House Surge Protectors" pictured at the bottom of that page, altho mine only cost ~$30 many years ago. My local power company installed it on the incoming power lines at the house for free. They used to carry the suppressors themselves but will still install them for you if you buy one from your local elect. supply dealer... your power company can prob. advise?

That and a new surge-suppressed electrical box have kept us safe from some very close lightning strikes so far.

Unfortunately, we have Progress Energy (aka Profit Energy) which offers a meter-based protector for $6/month plus $45 installation (plus tax), which then gives you the privilege of buying their individual surge protectors for $79 apiece (plus tax) [my APC ES550 UPS units can be purchased (on sale) for $40]. Major scam.

Or I could buy the $168 Leviton unit and pay a licensed electrician >$500 to install it- Sheesh.
My best bet, when I'm home in a storm, is a special anti-lightning-strike dance I learned from an old Native American.....

Since the 3576 is not a primary device for me I'm not going to spend a lot of time or especially money trying to get the missing channels.

I was simply trying to say that my Samsung TV's tuner is much better than the one in the 3576.

515 pulls a lot of signal strength. My old set up had splitter splitting the entering cable between the set top/dvr and a Panasonic DVDR. Worked fine. Rather than doing the recommended set up with the cable going to the DVDR and then to the set top, I just installed the 515 the same as I had with the Panny. All of a sudden a number of digital channels were crap, unviewable pixilation. Changed to the recommended set up and voila, everything was fine again.

Guess I should follow instruction from the get go. ;-)

Amazon store credit is only good for Amazon, not any third party sellers. But thanks for the tip anyways. Now that the 513 is so low I just may buy that instead. With my luck as soon as I do that they will get more 515s in at $220.

If you do a lot of time-shifting, I'd advise waiting for the 515 as long as possible... the pre-titling of recorded shows is invaluable to me with ~34 hours of weekly shows timer recorded. If you ever used a recorder for a full weekly workload that didn't pre-title, I believe you'd wholeheartedly agree! I also think the diff. in remotes is worth $50 alone (altho you can buy the remote separately for the older Mags)!

Yeah the upgrades I have read here from the 513 to the 515 really make me lean towards the newer model. I have a Sylvania Bluray that uses that same exact remote as the 513 and I am not a fan of it. I went OTA about 8 months ago and been using my beloved faithful 2006 Panny DMR-ES15 as a DVR (with a converter box to line-in 1 via composite) which it certainly was not meant for. I do not record that much TV but this current setup is really getting tiresome and 3rd rate. Man do I hate decisions like these...

Just a heads-up on the Sylvania and the remote... the 515 *Might* also operate the Sylvania? I don't know this for a fact, but just in case, you might want to read about operating multiple units with barrier, as described here?

Klugey but pretty simple, really, once you get used to it.

I may be way off base, but with Target, WalMart, Amazon and even J&R cutting prices or having special sales, I have a distinct feeling there's a new model somewhere in the pipeline and these reductions we're seeing are to reduce factory and dealer inventories.

Now, they say that new model includes............... (WOW)

The 513 remote operating both itself and the Bluray crossed my mind, which is another mark against it. In my main entertainment center I have 2 different Sony CD/DVD players manufactured 7 years apart with seemingly non-similar remotes and they are virtually interchangeable. Any barrier or separation method is totally impractical so I must keep 1 unplugged at all times. Not a big deal but I couldn't do that for the Bluray and a 513/15. The idea that a 515 could also possibly be affected never occurred to me. Crap

Yes, I reviewed my help file on Funai History and Sylvania IS one of their products, so odds are that the 513 or 515 remote would also operate it, but I have no actual experience with that combo.

I'm also not a Universal Remote user, so maybe someone can comment on that... help file here.

With the amount of components I have in the same entertainment center I suppose matching IR signals is unavoidable. I am not a universal remote user either. Unless this does become a problem I can't ever see myself getting into that.

This Worldwide Distributors seller on Amazon has a 515 refurb for $197. I've never bought from them but they have a 30-day return policy, manufacturer warranty, and 80,000 ratings at 96%. Could it be worth it?

Well, the "semi-official" or "AVS-touted Official" Mag HDD refurb seller is J&R at $209, which delivers Mags in brown factory boxes , and they come with official 90-day Mag warranty.

People have been scarfing up their prior refurb units, starting with the 2160, and have found them, for the most part, to be barely used (see SKIP codes for checking usage)... most must be "operator-error" machines. Virtually everyone who's bought a refurb from J&R has been quite happy.

Can't speak to WW Dist. as to what you can expect... until someone gets one from there, we won't know if they are "factory" refurb'd or not. If they don't come with a Mag warranty, I suppose that would be a good indication?

I think J&R's price remaining high and close to WM and Amazon's increasingly lower prices has hindered their sale, so they have retained units in stock MUCH longer than they usually did before.

Hmmm... I don't mind being a guinea pig by buying from this company. They seem pretty legit and apparently offer a Magnavox warranty. I'll gladly take some photos and post a follow-up here. What are these "skip codes" you refer to?

Most Sony DVD players usually have Unit codes that can be changed via menus to avoid this cross talk. So the remote can be changed to use a different signal and the unit can be set to respond to tht signal.

The Magnavox really needs to have some sort of unit code on there DVD's like the Sony DVD players do. There are lots of things that conflict with the Nec1 135.34 codes used by their Recorders.

I've read that Magnavox DVD recorders can use the 515H's remote, so there is a conflict there.

Here is just a partial list of other items that will also conflict
Magnavox BDP170MW8 (blu-ray)
Magnavox ZV457MG9 VCR/DVD
Magnavox MWD200G DVD Player
Magnavox-MDTR20-TV-VCR-DVD
Funai SV2000 WV20V6 DVD/VCR

Emerson DVD EWD7003
Symphonic WF20D4 20" TV/DVD Combo
Sylvania_6520FDE_TvDvdCombo
Symphonic WF802-DVD
Sylvania DVD 840
Sylvania 100B DVD

SKIP 321 for Laser Diode (DVD Burner) Usage.

Alright well I just pulled the trigger on it. Est. delivery is Aug 1-4 (next Mon thru Thurs). I'll run those codes, take some photos of the packaging, check for factory refurb, inspect for any cosmetic defects, etc. I'm assuming Magnavox has a sticker that says "official factory refurb" or something to that effect. Can anybody verify this?

Yes, these units have same remote code.
MDR515H has only a few additional key.

MrNews,

Hmm Progress Energy - I feel your pain.

From Your description of how they greedily grab every penny they can for a Lightening Protector they make me think of Verizon that greedily grabs every penny they can for any kind of extra service on the Verizon phones.

1234,
I am reprogramming my Universal remote that I can create Macros on, and it reminded my to beg for a discrete "On: and a Discrete "OFF" for your next generation Mag.

A discrete On and a Discrete OFF will move the Mag into the "Professional Equipment Category" at least in my opinion it would.

I have an Emerson LC220EM1 television in my bedroom. The "Return" command sent from the Magnavox remote operates the equivalent "Back" command on the TV, but the TV remote's "Back" command has no effect on the Magnavox recorder. Both units have Fun Link turned off so I don't think there is any HDMI magic going on. There are no other conflicts with this combination so I consider it a happy coincidence.
