I think this is great - they said no one wanted these recorders, and yet...

" if you build it..."

Just think what would happen if they put a significant number of these units on the store shelves.

Probably not much. It would not be well promoted, sales staff would not be educated on the features, and the Walmart shopper demographic isn't there for the electronics.

That said, I'm very impressed by the sales. At the current rate, why make a newer model unless is it significantly more advanced? We can only wish.

I'm ready for the HD version. Think it will ever come?

Right now, a HDD/BRD recorder is "more likely" than a new generation of the 515 HDD/DVD recorder. I've lobbied my ass off for the HDD/BRD, but it's all up to Funai now... they have our "prayer list"!

No.

Maybe better audio via DD 5.1 since most of that exists for DVD support and Tivo never sued anyone over better sound. I would suggest you not try the BV/ZAT-980H either. The PHD-eZ1 is vaporware.

Be happy the 515H exists. I surely am. I also have a 2160A with a 500Gb HDD, so I have a backup that works just fine.

OMG, not this again. I hope this time people will stifle their instinct to regale Funai with reasons why they can't or shouldn't bother! Let them decide... they're very smart too! Some personal pleading for Wish List #2 would be far better!

Walmart sold ~325 ea. 515's yesterday, restocked this morning with 400-500 more... so far!
Edit: Another 400 or so this afternoon.

Thank you, Funai!

I also have the same lockup problem with my second 513unit as airguy did. Audio video starts to cut out then a few minutes later and the unit goes into a hard lockup. I'm not sure if it only happens on power up or not.

Do the other non 5xx units not have this problem. It seems unbelievable that a simple poweron procedure with two units would cause such a hard lockup. I'm not willing to go through what appears a month long troubleshooting effort like air guy did to try and fix it, I'd rather just find one that works.

Few people makes much post about this issue at walmart.com, amazon.com and this thread, but we could not re-produce such problem in our labo.
We are sure that this trouble is happen under perticular condition.
Once an user meets this problem, he must meet it even he replaces unit.
We want to find what is the perticular condithion so that ALL US user can use our product without problem.

Please let us investigate your home whom meets hung problem.
Because I can ask to our Los Angeles engineer, I hope I can receive kind offer near LA.

Thank you for your cooperate.

Yes.. I have this problem and this is the second unit it has occurred on. I am in north Dallas, tx.

All I can tell you is that Funai is aware of the problem and is working on it. If you can, I'd advise keeping your unit for as long as you can w/o missing a return deadline.

Mag. could do a firmware fix that woud always put the 515 unit into the digial mode when the unit is turned off. I wonder if never turning the 515 off will cause reliablity problems and how much power it would use? I sure wish this would be fixed. It could be that a bad run of VLSIC chips (Could have been a bad wafer during the semiconductor fabrication) are in some of the units, I may try a third 515 in a month or two and see if I have any better luck..........BY the way has anyone had this problem with a 513? Other than the HDD size and the remote control they are the sime I think, wajo is that correct, and if so and there are no blanking and freezing problems on a 513 that could point to a bad chip run in some of the 515s..

Yes I have had the same problem with the 513s. I'm wondering if the 2xxx and the 3xxxx models are bug free. I'm waiting on a 3 hour!! Reset mode now to see if I can live with remembering to switch to FTC on power up. However most of my recording/watching will be done on analog so if the recording power on procedure also locksup this one has to go back as well.
Wajo thanks... We'll see. They been looking at it it appears for over 3 months. Is tough to make changes for only a few users.

Have any of the other models here exhibited the same behavior? I just want a VCR replacement that's rock solid.

It took so long cuz they had to get someone who complained to get ahold of their machine directly. When it first appeared, they even offered someone in the LA area, where their engineers are, to send one of them to a particular user's home to analyze, but he never responded. SO... they had to search and plead with others (like 234's post you quoted) who might be more cooperative, obtain more than one problematic machine, then analyze, test, retest, etc., etc.
Yes, I have a freeze problem on one of my 515s. I'm lucky to go a week without having to do a soft reset. I have had only one freeze with my other 515, when I was first setting it up. It is always set to L1 so it may have something to do with being on an analog channel.

It's a real pain to have to redo the timer programs. No use spending any time naming a planned recording when you have to redo them every week.

I'd appreciate a test just to be sure: do the SOft Reset after leaving unplugged for 1 minute, then if no joy, ~10 minutes or so. This is just to make sure this problem can't be solved with a simple nondestructive method.

Several people have tried to revive their machines with that method, but they failed until they did the full Soft Reset procedure.

Since we don't know the true source of this problem, I've been trying to think of ways to reset w/o the long waiting period... unintended consequence of us asking for MORE power backup time!

I am still pondering if this is the right set for me. I have an older 26" crt hdtv, which has component and a DVI input. I currently have one of those HDMI-DVI cables, which I could use, if need be.

I have read that this unit will upconvert dvd's to 1080p through HDMI. Will it also upconvert OTA recordings?

Will this unit only upconvert via HDMI, or will it do it through component as well?

Being that my set is limited to 1080i, do you think I will get the benefit of any upconversion, or do you think I would be stuck with 480i?

TIA for all your help.
Pretty sure my 3575 does upconverting through both outputs so yours should be the same if you get one. It will upconvert to the limit the TV can use as far as options but the conversion my TV does looks better then what the unit can do so I set it to 480p and let my TV do the work. I have a 34" Toshiba cinema series 34HFX84 CRT set myself and it does 1080i max as well so you should be fine, mine looks great.

It only upconverts thru HDMI, but DVI is the *same* as HDMI without the audio. Pressing the HDMI button on the remote cycles thru all the formats the attached TV is capable of, skipping those it can't use.

You can also turn HDMI audio off in the menus, using the normal L/R audio cables to the TV or digital coax to a receiver. (Not sure if it HAS to be turned off if converting to DVI or not.)

Thanks for the input. It looks like it might be a moot point, though. I swapped out my Tivo HD from the other room, and hooked it up to my crt via the HDMI-DVI cable, and I could not get the tv set to recognize a digital signal from the DVI port. It keeps saying "searching for signal." I can get hd from the Tivo through component cables, but DVI seems to be a bust for me.

I think my set is a cheaper, older model that does not do internal upconverting. At least, I do not see that option anywhere in the menu. So, if the Mag does not do any upconverting through the component output, then I may have to choose something else.

Wajo, thanks for all your help. Considering my situation and the limitations of my set, would I be correct in assuming I would be limited to standard 480i if I were to use the Mag's component outputs?

I want to run an idea past the experts here.

I just got a new car that has a 10gb Music Register built in. It will record WMA and MP3 files from audio CD's and, I think, from the same DVD+RW format the 515 prefers.

I also have Comcast with a bunch of commercial-free music channels.

I have not tried using the 515 yet for recording to discs, only to the hard drive for time shifting, so no experience here recording to disc.

I am wondering a couple things:

1. If I record a few hours of music from the Comcast channels to the 515 hard drive without sitting there starting and pausing the 515 to weed out the songs I don't want, can I then go back, insert an appropriate blank disc, then continually start and pause the hard drive, recording only the songs I want to keep from the hard drive to the blank disc?

2. If the above works, what would be the file type of the songs on the disc? If it's not WMA or MP3, apparently it won't download to the car's Music Register.

Even if this works, I have a feeling recording music from Comcast this way would result in one very long track or title of all the songs I save to disc, rather than each song being it's own track as seen by the car's Music Register or separate Title as seen by the Maggie. But if all this works, that's OK since, in essence, I'd have a long album of all the songs I want in one track, which could then be placed into it's own custom named folder in the Register. Maybe.

Any thoughts, gentlemen?

Well, 480p with Progressive Scan turned on.

Being the curious skeptic I am, I have to believe your TV has a setting to make your DVI output use more of the HD resolutions/formats?

Nevertheless, I think you might be pleasantly surprised with the PQ obtained with the 515 and Component 480p, esp. on a 26" CRT, and esp, if you get any digital channels!

Here's a help file on recording music to a DVD.

Getting the music on a DVD is the easy part. Using it in a car system that apparently accepts only WMA and MP3 is the hard, or impossible, part.

Tracks of music recorded to a DVD are in the same basic format as video/audio (MPEG2/DD2.0).

How to get those files into your Music Register sounds like a fascinating project, but I've got no clues here.

Edit: I don't know for sure what the AUDIO files look like on a disc, but since they're produced with DD2.0, I wonder if getting just those AUDIO files off in another format might actually be "pretty easy"???

I was thinking along the same lines. If there was a method to reset without losing program timers, this freeze issue would be a lot easier to live with. Be nice if the timer program was on the HDD, permanent like the recordings.

I have tried reconnecting after about 10 minutes without result. I will test longer intervals the next time it freezes. My freeze prone unit is now on its eighth freeze free day! But it won't last. The first indication of corruption is the clock going to the 24 hour mode and mine did yesterday. It seems this freeze-free interval is the longest I have had. I've tried to keep the unit tuned to a digital channel but that hasn't always been possible because of some analog channel timer recordings.

Another experiment I may try is recording a digital channel or L1 for a minute immediately after an analog channel recording so that the unit always turns off while tuned to digital or L1.

I assume you did the Soft Reset procedure, holding the power button on front while replugging?

If you want to leave the 515 tune in a "harmless" location w/o having to do a recording, try setting it to L3 before turning it off.

If you opt for L1, just press the Source button (or 001 on keypad) which automatically select L1, then turn off?

However, we also posted a Wish List #2 for a HDD/BRD recorder which Funai may or may not be considering for North America. They do know about Wish List #2, and they actually made some changes to the 515 based on the original Wish List. They have the technology for Asia and everyone else but little ole' North America is a hard nut to crack because we just HAD to pick a different TV system from most everyone else.

If they actually decide to produce such a recorder for us, it will probably not be possible until next year?

The real stumbling block is DRM and the TV/Movie studios.
