When you get a chance,. would you check the FW Versions in your new 515's using the SKIP 123 procedure here, "FW Version Check Only" at the beginning.

I'm interested in seeing if they have BE Version 727V or 724V.

I'd also suggest you put your 515's thru the paces before boxing them up for the future.

If any of you are Slingbox users you should upvote this (http://answers.slingbox.com/ideas/1089) and maybe the people at slingbox will create a remote for the 515.

They're boxed up still. I'll take a look tomorrow and post back here.

What do you suggest I do to put my 515's thru the paces?
I'm thinking I will:
- Record to HDD via the tuner
- Record to DVD via the tuner
- Copy from HDD to DVD

Is there anything else I should test for? I don't really want to take the time to test all the inputs and all the outputs on the 515's. Are there any common issues I should test for?

Those sound good, and may be all that's needed if your OTA. If your a cable sub., also check for tuning issues:
1. Does it find all expected channels?
2. Does it consistently keep working if you shut off while tuner is on an analog channel? (If it doesn't, do a Soft Reset as described here.)
3. Do recorded shows on the HDD play back w/o dropouts?

J&R is sold out on 515 refurb's right now. Let's hope they get a new supply after Walmart sells off their current supply (167) of new 515's.

The firmware version that was installed in the refurb 515 is HD6A269727V1E. This is the unit that appears to have some sort of software issue with the HDMI/Fun Link CEC.

I wonder if the lastest FW is installed as part of the refurb process. I am not home right now and I don't know what firmware was installed on the new 515 that I purchased mid to late November. I will be checking it as soon as return home.

Thanks for the help!

Is this what you're looking for?

Sling it to your PC Anywhere

The 2160 codes should control the 515.

Ok, I'm in for another refurb. (J & R says it's in stock again). I was going to get a new one for 'posterity', but Walmart price was $50 more, plus shipping, plus tax, and up to now I've been very pleased with refurbs (all 2160a) from J & R. $199. + free shipping for 'friends'. Hard to refuse. Hoping it's a ready-for-prime time purchase!

Forgot to ask - I have mostly 2160As that I did one firmware upgrade on ... about to tackle those and an early 515 with whatever firmware shipped on it. Think I will update all. Do I need to do interim updates before installing the latest one(s) ? So far, I've not changed much -- except update to get rid of the error code when finalizing on the 2160As -- but it would be nice to be able to title recordings (I've gotten spoiled by the 515). My 515 tuner is not in use (cable box only), so I never had the problems others have experienced with the tuner glitches. It's been a champ. This was the Skip 123 info on the firmware it shipped with.

You can go directly to 727V... 2160A, 513 or 515 ONLY.

Make sure you download all available FW ZIP files and keep for possible future upgrade or downgrade (in case you don't like a new FW).

not sure I understand - 727V for the 515 only, or can it be used on the 2160s too. Sorry to be slow.. I'm out of practice

727V was released for the 515 but it can be used in the 2160A and 513, as described here.

Heads-up: Last batch of new 515's is being produced this month!

142 left at Walmart from previous batch.

gotcha, thanks. And 72A is the backup. I was just wondering if I needed any interims, but from the docs it sounds as though the 'superFW" can go back to 72A, which already fixes the finalizing error, no need to go back to "original' firmware, then apply the fix if reverting. I thought I had all these, but I'm going to download everything for the 2160As again, just in case!

Is there also download for the old 515 firmware ((HD6A269724V1E) 724V, or no need to get that since 727 supercedes it.

I really hate that they're giving up on this... I guess I understand the marketing rationale, but clearly there's interest, and since they have the exclusive product to fill the niche, you'd think they'd want to keep things going for awhile.

724V is OEM FW and we have no ready access to OEM FW. A "reversion" of 727V has been proved on 2160A and 513 machines so by all means download all currently available ZIP fles (and instructions). The latest instructions on the FW page here were made more 'generic" than past ones so they'll apply to all FW updates, just FW numbers will change.

The FW Update help file has details on everything related to updating, and the FW List shows the FW progression in each machine..

Important Notice:

Production of these Magnavox HDD/DVD recorders will end in the 1st Qtr of 2012. There are currently NO PLANS to replace them.

Only YOU can help with a last-gasp effort to keep "something" coming to replace them!
  1. Read and Post in Our Special-Purpose Thread.

I've created a new thread requesting Walmart to ask Funai, their Strategic Supplier, to produce a HDD/BRD/DVD recorder for North America (USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America).

Please add your concurrence in that thread to bolster the scope and importance of the request. Please, no personal prefs, off-topic stuff, etc., just a bunch of good will towards Walmart which has kept us happily recording on HDD for 5 years now!

  2. Send a Personal Request to Walmart.

Here's a Walmart HQ contact form that might work for everyone. Choose "Company Feedback and Questions" (1st column, 2nd item) which takes you to pg. 2 and 3 for info and submittal. MAKE SURE YOU ADD A LINK TO THE NEW THREAD:

    Code:
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=21516203#post21516203

I've sent my request to that contact point and will update here if they redirect it to a different contact. Here's the text of my submittal:

This is a desperate plea for you to request that Funai, your Strategic Supplier, develop a new HDD/BRD/DVD recorder for North America, as described in the following thread on the million-member-strong AVS Forum:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1388304

Funai has the technology since they sell the requested recorder to virtually EVERYONE ELSE except the poor souls here in North America.

We would be eternally grateful if you would put your considerable weight behind such a request!
These are both long shots but they're really our only hope to keep new recorder technology coming from Funai, which already produces HDD/BRD/DVD recorders for virtually everyone else!

I would be glad to help, but could you make the procedure a little easier? Where & what do I select? What should/could I post? I have a lot of email addresses, so I could virtually spam them on a small scale. Anything I can do to help.

Obviously, you can do whatever you want AFA who you contact and what you say.

My post has a *suggested* link to what appears to be the best one for such a "high-level" (HQ) request, plus suggested text, and it's probably best if all our requests went to the same place... but then, that's just my opinion.

IOW, 715 was a "foreign" object AFA the 513 was concerned, and perhaps this should be considered in all suggested approaches to solving this problem now that the deed is done?

The OEM FW in the FIRST 513's (mfg ~Apr-Jun 2010) was 718, but they switched to 72A for later 513 units... another possible complicating factor?

718 was also the 2nd user update for the 2160A, and 72A was the 3rd user update. That's why I suggested 718 cuz it was the next one up from the 715 now in the machine. That might make sense for a 2160A, but in a 513 that never had 715 to start with, ...........??????

Your situation *might* be the same as someone who mistakenly installs 72A on a 515, a FW it never saw, then tries to recover to a current 515 version?

* * * * * * *

Considering the above, I'm reluctant to suggest anything new until we think more about how to update a unit that has "foreign" FW (altho I may be overstating its importance).

Atti had a 2160A that he was installing 715 FW on and used SKIP 123 + OK (hard reset), which changed his TT Version from 4 to 5. This might be OK to try since it doesn't involve uploading/attempting another FW version... the same hard reset may "jog" your 715 FW to a point it'll accept one of the later updates... preferably starting with which one, however?

Here again there might be something to consider: 718 was the OEM FW in the EARLY-513's (mfg ~Apr-Jun 2010), but 72A was OEM in the LATE-513's (mfg ~Jul 2010 and beyond). I'd try the one that fits your mfg date, but then....

P.S. I'd like to get the 715 ZIP file from you since that's the only one I don't have.

Wajo,

I tried the hard reset followed by firmware-feeding, still with no luck -- stays stuck on FW 715. Peculiar that it would have accepted 715 in the first place. More so that it will NOT accept later versions.

Anyone with any ideas?

Just a heads up for anyone that is going to order a 515 from Walmart. Is if you first go through ebates.com to place the order, the current offer is a 4% rebate. If you do not have a ebates account, sign up for one. Hey, when it comes to money, every little bit that you can keep in your pocket helps.

What kind of disc do you have the firmware updates on? My 513 has trouble with some + discs that my 515 can handle. I've successfully updated firmware versions with CD-R and DVD-R discs. I wouldn't even attempt it with + media.

I've had a 2160a for a while and this situation has been going on since I first got it. I think I just finally got tired of it. What's happening is that my output from my 2160a is displaying a beautiful picture on my Pioneer Kuro. However, there is a tiny strip at the top of the picture that is from the bottom of the picture. It is as if the picture rolled down a bit so that the bottom starts to roll into view at the top.

I have a 2160a that is connected through my Comcast Magnavox DVR using the S-Video input on the 2160a. Output to the tv is via an HDMI cable.

Current settings on 2160a:
Video: Progressive Scan - On
TV Aspect - 16:9
Video Input - S-Video
HDMI: Format - YCbrCr

Pioneer Kuro display set at Auto

Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be appreciated.

1. Turn Progressive Scan off since HDMI sets its own formats, which includes PS when those formats are selected. This will also allow composite and S-Video outputs on the Mag to work (if/when needed).

2. I get a small line at top of my Vizio LCD when I send 1080p to the TV. I can actually see the pic shift and resize when changing format sent to the TV via HDMI. I always send 480p with best results in my analog cable system.
