Friday - Two Days from Monday

Question on anyone going with an extended Warranty. If you get an extended Warranty and the unit fails 90 days from now how will the warranty be honored if there are no "Exact Replacements" available?

Wajo - I posted to your new thread

I noticed your link includes the numbers "515", and yet it brings us to their page for the 513. Says something.

I'd hope they'd try to fix the machine in that case.

Or if they can't fix it, money back, or an equivalent replacement brand...oops.

"I'd hope they'd try to fix the machine in that case."

I hope you are correct on that.

If anyone has a big lots in their area it may not hurt to check in now and then. A few years back I picked up a Magnavox digital/analog tuner DVD recorder for $50.00

Eventually Big Lots may get some 513's

dare2be,

Did you have the ripped DVD in your internal PC hardrive when you used "VideoRedo TV Suite 4 " ?

I have made the mistake of using external USB hardrives and they sometimes can cause thruput issues that could result in audio being off.

OMG, Walmart stock of 513's suddenly dropped to 206!

They could be selling to other retailers, as we found they've done before, or this could just be an inventory "burp" of some kind.

Whatever it is, it could be really bad news!

I think everyone reading your thread has gone out and bought a unit or 2 (or 3 or 4).

On an eSATA external drive, so I'd say that qualifies as enough throughput.

To be clear, the audio was not "off" or out of sync. There was an added background screeching noise in the audio, but only for a few seconds after the cut.

The other thing I noticed after the cuts were completed is that the reported number of video frames was lower than the reported number of audio frames.

J&R has the 515 refurb listed again but shows it sold out. Maybe another batch of refurbs are coming soon.

Attractive and convenient alternatives that fit in the same or less space as a DVR and use no more dead dinosaurs to operate? Where? URL please.

In any event, it will be hard to envision an alternative solution that does not involve a PC and some non-free software.

Are you not familiar with the world of FOSS? Virtually anything available for Redmond OSes can be had for Linux as long as you have the patience to wait for new stuff, and without confounding security issues, tiny configuration windows or poorly adaptive UI experience.

You, I suppose. Me, unlikely. No blood in these turnips.

Why such resistance to pay a little more for the software to make it run the way you want. Can't have it all for free.

A "little" more works out to a lot more when speaking of opportunity cost, proprietary dependencies, multiple instances and recurring renewals, and is antagonistic to the concept of free (non-subscription) TV.

As a matter of principle I prefer to keep my money out of the possession of entities I'd rather see disappear from the face of the planet than benefit from the fruit of my labors. That means no money to the cablecos and satcos that offer no a la carte subscription programming, and no respect to the mega monopolist content owners who demand providers offer either a whole package of unrelated content regardless of merit, or nothing at all.

Like too many others, I have family suffering lack of a job or realistic job opportunity, while I'm on a low, fixed retirement income. I can't rationalize spending more money to get what is available for less money or no money. I have no cell phone, no TV subscriptions, don't eat out, use generics, shop mostly in WalMart, drive a 27 year old car, and have no corners left to cut.

In the FOSS world, pretty much everything is indeed available for no direct cash outlay. That's what I'm used to, and depend on. I do have some time and skill to contribute to keep that system and the resources it depends on working, but it requires I don't devote money or energy to any option that acts to thwart it.

Already some good discussion of options after DVDR-death, but it really needs to be in the thread started just for that discussion!?

There will prob. still be plenty of Mag HDD DVDR users coming here for info and help with their immediate questions or problems.

That "future" other thread is highlighted in the list on page 1 and elsewhere in this thread/forum, so they should be able to find it?

Can you move the posts to the new thread? I already copied some of my posts to there.

At 12:17 EST my nephew right after buying a 513 reported to me he was able to put 443 in his cart. Hopefully all it means is too many people from here filling their carts to see how many remain in stock.

I can only ask a Mod to do it. Unfortunately, the now "off-topic" posts are interspersed with on-topic posts, making it more "difficult." If they agree to do it at all, I'm sure they'll want me to point them out by post#... we'll see.

Don't move any more posts over until I hear back.

Oh, crap, only 101 now!

Oh, double-crap, ALL GONE NOW!

THEY HAD 456 THIS MORNING ~9:00am. CST

Try again at 6AM EST to see if too many full carts is the current problem. Hopefully most didn't goto scalper hoaders. That 997 from last week sure went fast if current out status is actually true, and it's hard to believe Funai would quit manufacture of something selling so well.
I'm so glad I ordered my 2 513s a couple hours ago.

Cart quantities are not held by Walmart or Amazon. WM used to in the very early days for these units, but they got smart real quick and now even post a note on how they're NOT holding them for bozos like me (who think there's always a little more time to wait).

WOW! Glad I got mine delivered from Walmart today! It was a new 513 with a June 2011 build date. Since I assumed there would be some available for a day or so (in case of worst case failure) I tried to update the FW but had the same issues reported by a couple guys about a week or so. The load progresses to what seems like the end but then quits. I tried a CD and a DVD. I guess I'll just keep it like it is and try loading the FW another time since it is working now and I have one. A bird in the hand and all that...

Thanks again Wajo for all the work and great information in this thread!

I just got a call from my local Walmart manager who said he was notified that I was looking for a recorder (based on the form I sent earlier), and he had just ordered 4 of them from his stock!

Wow! Sounded good...

However, the ones he thought I wanted were Mag disc recorders, $98 ea.

98 available right now!

I just ordered a couple of 513's from suddenly-found Walmart stock and plan to update them both to 727V.

EDIT: My prev. stated plans for updating my new 513's to SuperFW 727V have changed since Nocturnal posted that he got a new, early-513 (Apr-Jun 2011 Mfg) and went directly to 727V. His unit had OEM FW 718, the first FW any 513 had, so updating ANY 513 directly to 727V *should* be OK.

Optimist time: or maybe they are slowly unpacking the crates from the China boat.

Well, yeah. That's the whole idea behind a HTPC -- it's a dedicated box. It doesn't have to be super expensive or super powerful for video. You can get something around $300-350 that will fit the bill.

Perhaps Amazon bought the 515H's to sell for $350? They seem to have them in stock.

wajo,
while imagining my desires to record tv (cable) programs for future use, I bought a 515 about a yr ago from walmart. I am ashamed to say due to health issues, I havent even set it up yet, but plan to soon !!! Your thread here is awesome in its scope, dedication to the product, and the wealth of info provided....... I will definately be checking the setup threads yet again to get it installed.
Kelson, you and others have been a great help with the WD SMP issues I currently finished working on....

Moving on to new thread !!!!

Bill

IF those 513's are EARLY-MFG units like yours (Apr-June 2011), I plan to FIRST install 72A FW, then 727H, then 727V. This would be a "natural" FW progression for early 513's.

IF my units are LATE-MFG units (Jul- >), it should already have 72A FW, but I think I'll STILL install 727H first, then 727V.

I picked one up last week, and after making sure it was working, I updated it directly to 727V. I didn't even bother checking what version it came with (except I know it wasn't 727V because it lacked the ability to add a title to a timer recording). Anyway, it's working fine with the 727V firmware, and it was manufactured in May, 2011.

ordered my 513 today from wall mart, I love my 2160A and didn't want to miss out on the last one available ever. I was hoping for a 515 in last 1/4 2012 but i guess i missed the boat.
