It will disappear if I cycle through the inputs on my TV, but this most recent time it came back in about one minute.

It could be a CC setting for digital CC background color or opacity set for Black (with no CC to display)???

Check your SETUP > General Setting > Display > CC Style > User Setting and make sure it's OFF.

If that's not it, let us know?

OK, I set it up like it says on page 16 using the old VCR (that was easy) and I must be the biggest goober because I still do not get a setup screen. What am missing?
I have the TV on ch 3 and have tried it with the VCR on and off.
Thanks for the help

Does your TV have line inputs, like Yellow RCA for video + Red & White RCA for audio?

Yes, I plugged in the RCA jacks. I know it is something simple I am missing.

How do you get your TV signal: antenna, cable, or satellite?

Why are you using pg 16 of the manual?

Since your TV does have RCA jacks, why can't you connect as shown in sketch #1 or #2 in this link depending on how you get your TV signal... LEAVE THE VCR OUT FOR NOW...(click here, please)?

You probably need to change the input mode on your VCR in order to view the line input. The method of doing this varies depending on the brand.

On many VCRs, you can tune to either your highest or your lowest channel number and then press the channel up/down button to view the line inputs which are normally identified as L, L1, or L2.

If that doesn't work, there should be an input select button. On my remote, there is a button labeled i.select. Pressing that button should allow you to select the appropriate line input.

If neither of these methods work for you, then you will have to check your VCR manual to determine how to view the line input.

Much thanks for your incredible work on this thread.

I also have both the 3575 & the 2160 [known as the dynamic duo]. The USB input on the Philips machine is very cool and saves a step in being able to directly view your slide shows and listen to music dumped from your computer, without having to first create a CD or DVD to do so.

That said, I've only used the feature once in the 14 months I've had the Philips. Whether it's worth the extra $50 is a personal decision.

My recommendendation: Get one of each while they're in stock!

I found a setting that can produce a random black box on the TV... it's in my LCD TV's CC setting. The remote has a CC button, and pressing that goes thru CC1 thru CC4 then TT1 thru TT4, which is a teletype setting. When I set my TV for TT1, I get a large black box, then a small black box that grows depending on if the program has TT data (I guess).

Maybe you've accidentally set your TV for a TT setting in its CC menus, and since TT appears to be very random, depending on the program, it might appear at odd times?

Also, as I posted earlier, check your 3576's SETUP > General Setting > Display > CC Style > DTV CC and > User Setting and make sure they're both OFF.

My TV has no RCA jacks that is why I used page 16 or used the VCR

Make sure the cables are plugged into output on the Philips. Then, look at where you plugged the cables into the TV and it should name the input. You need input 1 or aux or aux 1 on the TV. Look on the TV remote for an "input" key and press that until you see the Philips.

Then you need to find the proper way to set your VCR for showing what it's receiving from the VCR input to which you attached those RCA cables, as suggested in posts above.

My Panasonic DVD/VCR combo has an "Input" button as well as a VCR/TV button. Check your VCR's remote for some way to select the line input your 3576 is attached to so the VCR can modulate the 3576's signal thru the VCR coax and on to the TV.

Thanks wajo. I won't be able to check this all out for a while because I am going in for surgery in a couple hours and will be in the hospital for at least a few days. As soon as I can some standing I will get back at it. Most likely will buy a RF Modulator instead of using the VCR.
Thanks again, Jim

Is there a way I can copy divx files from a DVD or flash drive to the HDD.

I don't have any DivX files so haven't tested them, and the manual doesn't say anything about copying DivX files, just playing them. However, I'm fairly certain that, if you can play DivX files on CD or DVD from an external player to a line input on the 3575/3576/2160, it should record them. I've played music files on CD from an external player and recorded them on my 3575... even w/o the video cable connected so I could get a lot more music on the DVD.

According to the manual, a DivX file on a USB device can only be played, not recorded?

I wish I did have some DivX files cuz it sounds like a very interesting test subject (I love tests!). I'd like to:
  1. Load a DivX file and see if the Dubbing option is available like for a video DVD.
  2. Play a DivX file in the DVDR and see if DIRECT DUBBING works to dub that file to the HDD.
  3. Play a DivX file from an external player and see if it copies to the HDD like a VHS tape or a music CD.
Maybe someone with DivX files can try one or more of these tests?

Let me know what you get as it does not give the dubbing option for moving files from DVD to HDD. Only reason I want to do this is so I can save the movies to the HDD instead of swapping DVDs each time. A nice convenient feature. I do not have another DIVX player so I cannot test recording from one player to the other which I am sure it will by play & record feature.

I have 3575 and love it and am looking at getting another unit too. After looking at Sam's price on 3576 and Walmart's 2160, seems better to buy 3576 from Sams. Price difference is much less then $50.

I'm fairly certain also that playing and recording from an external player should work, but you can try the only other option with the DIRECT DUBBING button... start the DivX file playing in the DVDR, then press the DIRECT DUBBING button (bottom section of remote)... doesn't matter when you press the DUBBING button during the playback, if it works, it'll copy the DivX file from its beginning.

Getting another 3576 is good if you don't plan on using them in the same place since the remote will operate both units at the same time. If you can separate them enough, it should work.

Much better is getting the 2160 since they can be side-by-side and operate independently since their remotes are model-specific.

I'd just like to know when Wal-Mart's price on the 76 went up to nearly $300. When I sent my 75 back to be fixed/replaced and almost immediately went to Wal-Mart to get a 76, I don't recall the online price being that high.

(Does sound like the price I found at the store tho'. Of course, the manager gave me a break and let it go for 20% off... silly silly lady. )

What's the Sam's price on the 76? (Can't even find it any more on their website.)

Hi. I'm new here. Just bought a Motorola H2080MW8 (which I belive is the 3575) from Wallmart online and have a few questions. (Manuf. July 2007)
I'd like to know if I put a larger HD in this unit, would the firmware support it?
Is there a firmware update for this box and if so, where can I download it?
Also, I have a motorola cable box from Time Warner and the remote doesn't seem to have a code for this model. One code lets it power on and off, but does not support any other functions.
The remote is identified as OCAP.
Are there any region hacks for this. The old Apex was great for this. It died and so did the Samsung combo unit. That's why I bought this unit to finally get rid of VHS forever.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

The 2080 is a Magnavox and is last year's 80GB HDD version. Here's the thread for that unit.

This thread covers the new Philips designs for 2007 and 2008, the DVDR3575H/37 and 3576, and the recent addition of the Magnavox H2160MW9, which is a clone of the Philips 3576 with a 160GB HDD and same operating characteristics.

Click my signature for lots of organized info on these units.

Here's some interesting, early news on the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 in Las Vegas starting Jan 8 2009...

Philips is Out!

Funai is In!

The only "Philips" you'll see at CES 2009 will be at the Funai booth.

Philips/Maganvox may not be the biggest brand name, but when it's the only hard drive and DVD recorder to choose from....

Thanks.

That sort of stinks.

Just a few months ago you could search no matter where you were and then (I guess) find out if the item was available in your local store.

Maybe people complained that it was getting their hopes up, only to find out they couldn't buy a particular item in their local Sam's.

Right now, with new 3576's going for $248 and new Mag 2160's going for $240, your $224 for a 3575 might be a little high?
