I'm having some misgivings, even at the price.

DTS: I understand it doesn't decode, but will it pass the DTS via optical to a tuner if the output is set to stream?

WS/Lbx/etc: You describe the recordings as WYSIWYG. My source will be the DVD recorder's own tuner (I do not have a STB, but have a cable provider), the TV it is attached to is 4x3 so wide programming will need to be viewed letterboxed. The thing is I do not want to record letterboxed, I want to record anamorphic so burned discs will be optimal quality when viewed on other displays. Is this possible? (Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I found your explanation a bit confusing.)

You said when recording natural 16x9 as as 16x9 wide recording played on a 4x3 TV:

This is unclear. Are you saying there are black bars added but the AR is slightly off, or are you saying the image fills the screen top to bottom, and YOU are unable to tell the difference in the AR.

Finally, it sounds like only single layers discs can be used, not DVD9s.

Btw, this unit was boxed Feb '08. I'll let you know about the tuner if/when I get this set up.

Edit: Also has anyone tried to hack the firmware to give better functionality (such as DivX over USB)?

If we could hack the FW we would shut off the test for CP among other things.

I asked earlier if this will work at recording and would I be able to have a picture of what I recorded. I am not using this to watch DTV just to record and watch it?

What happens when you press the DTV/TV button on the remote.

It switches from DTV to Analog but no sound on analog only on DTV.

But you get audio and video when TV is switched to TV input (antenna)

Ok, back to ground zero.
Shut 3576 and TV off.
Disconnect HDMI cable
Connect Component cable from DVR to TV
Now double check red to red, green to green and blue to blue
Connect audio cable L/R red/white from DVR to TV
Turn both DVR and TV on
Set TV to component input
Do a skip 1,2,3 and setup the DVR again.

Now what do you get.

I have both a 3575 & 3576. I am looking to pick up a spare recorder.
I can get either the Philips 3576 or the Magnavox 2160 for about the same price $250. Which one would you choose? I am using analog cable presently but may switch to satellite in the near future. Thanks for your input and suggestions.

I have both 3575 and H2160 IMO I would pick the H2160 maybe because I use it as a workhorse. Never a problem with either.
I am connected to DirecTv HD. In your case maybe the 3576 just for parts compatibility.

With the Philips already, I'd certainly go for the 2160 cuz it can operate side-by-side with the Philips, w/o remotes clashing, and ops are basically the same. A few features are better in the 2160 also, as listed here.

Gee thanks auskck and wajo. One vote for each. I guess I'd better sleep on it before you guys make me get one of each. Of couse donations would be accepted for that.

Same thing no picture but I do have audio. Don't know if this matters or not but the picture I get is a fluttering black screen.

Do You think I should return it?

Wajo - do you think the Magnavox is better? I need 1 more recorder should I get another one of either the Magnavox/Philips or just and recorder with a tuner but not with a HDD since they are cheaper and it is just a backup recorder.

I'd go for the Mag... I think they learned from the 3575 and 3576 a little... and it's prettier!
Auskck - when I change from DTV to analog I only get channel 2 and when I try to change the channel it goes though looking at the inputs of the recorder not sure why. maybe this more messed up than I think. I also do not get any sound from analog. Also when I push the audio button on the remote it does not display anything.

I'm with wajo go for the magnavox I can't remember any problems reported other than user problems maybe 1 DOA but I can't recall.
Looks like your box has internal problems getting video from the tuners. I think we have gone through all the possibilities. First one we have seen with this problem.

Auskck - First Thank You for the link and also all your help. Look at thread sent to Wajo. What would be a good less expensive recorder with ATSC tuner, I just need a back up for the odd time I need to record 2 programs at the same time. but would want to play back on Samsung HDTV
