That's what that means. Why are you going with such an old socket as LGA775 anyway?

No other choice in the Intel low-end segment until LGA 1155 (the new socket) Pentium/Celeron is released (H2 2011)...

My friend, shall we just agree that there's a difference in opinion of the value of this build guide? That's all I was trying to get across.

I haven't even built an HTPC and I think i've gotten 10 bucks worth of information/entertainment just from reading the past years thread. I'm amazed that anyone takes the time to develop, maintain and anwser the same questions over and over just for donations. Thanks to all the contributors who make this such a great forum.

I'm not exactly sure what 'green' memory is but if you are referring to low voltage memory then yes, I have some low voltage ADATA memory in my h55/i3 and it runs great.

the reason i picked that motherboard is because newegg is out of stock of the eVGA e-7100 and tiger direct doesnt seem to have it. is there an alternative that has some sort of integrated graphics same price range that suports ddr3?
P5G41C-M will take either DDR2 or DDR3 (I have this in my HTPC currently)
P5G41T-M will take only DDR3

Rene mentioned this on the previous page.

Other than that, IIRC, they are the same MLB you have selected. I run mine with an add-in ATI 5450, I don't use the integrated GPU.

You are lucky that eVGA e-7100 is out of stock. G41 onboard video is much better for video playback.

I am currently working on building my first HTPC and was wondering if the following components would allow for proper blu-ray decoding and playback (DTS-MA, DD TrueHD etc.). I will also use this as a mediaserver as well.

AMD Phenom II X6 1075T
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
HIS Silence H557HR1G Radeon HD 5570

along with 4-6GB of memory with a 650w PSU

far more than needed, so yes.

I found some info about ArcSoft hotkeys using an AVS forum search, as well as Windows hotkeys, but none of these seem to apply here. I've read read reviews on the case, and the reviewers go on in great detail about the display, but no mention of what the buttons do. The case looks great but I question how useful these buttons would be, or even a volume control for that matter, since the invention of the remote control.

I can't believe I stumped the propeller heads at AVS forums with this question! The Luxa2 LM200 is listed in Renethx's build list, and it has hotkeys. What do these things do?

hey tornado how is that video card with your system? how is it for gaming? i dont think ill have the card for a bit so does the motherboard come with a vga pci to hdmi out of the box or something? do i have to get that myself?

Just made my donation, just hoping there is a setup i can afford and suites what i need.

How is this "HTPC guide for sale" business appropriate for the forums? It is nothing more than a commercial product being offered under the guise of a "donation". The three month waiting period seems like a poor excuse.

If if were a true donation, then it would be optional, not compulsory. If you want to sell the guide then get your own website, don't use a free forum to advertise; it is just spam.

If you wanted, you could post maybe half of the guide, leaving out all your testing and comments, and offer the full guide to donors.

@Dussk

Thanks for your opinion. Asking a donation for the new release of the guide was a very tough decision and is subject to change if there is a better way both for me and the community. I am still seeking it...

The bottom line is that if the owners / moderators of AVS Forums don't have a problem with it, then it's ok. If you've got a problem with what renethx is doing here, it would be much more appropriate to take it up with the moderators rather than posting a negative comment in the thread.

I wonder if some people really appreciate how much time and money it takes to put together the guides that you've been providing. It's not cheap to go out and purchase parts AND take the time to test them to make sure everything works well together. Even if you were able to get manufacturers and/or stores like NewEgg to donate parts (have you explored this?), there's still the time factor. I actually owe you a donation because your guides have come in handy in the past - I've always made some substitutions to suite my needs, but you've definitely saved me some trial and error along the way.

So basically Dussk's first or second post on AVS is criticizing Renethx who I would consider one of the most respected contributors on AVS

Completely agree that some people do not fully appreciate the time going into the guides Rene puts together. I do find it amusing that some folks are willing to put hundreds/thousands of dollars into this hobby (which mind you is an expensive hobby) yet the idea of having to spend a few bucks for support/guidance they consider outrageous. No one is forcing anyone to use Renethx's guides as there are many other sources (including doing the research yourself). As long as the mods are ok with Renethx's approach there should be zero issue with it (as a note I used Renethx's guides to help build my WHS a year a back and did send a donation)

Agreed. Way to make an entrance!
renethx started the thread and uses it to educate a lot of folks who want to do their own build. The donation is not much to ask, and it is not mandatory just to read the thread. It is easier to ignore it than to write a long post complaining about it. Sheesh.

And look how diplomatically R responds. Kudos.

Lol, I should definitely take a page out of Rene's book with some of my responses

Sorry man, I probably shouldn't have posted anything. I guess I was just disappointed that I didn't get to see the new guide.

I'll wait for the free version. Good luck and thanks for the effort.

Putting my money where my mouth is... Rene - I just sent you a long overdue donation with a little extra to help make up for some who are unwilling to help you out. Thank you for all the assistance you provide in this thread and throughout AVS Forums.

I feel your pain, Dussk. /Bill Clinton

IMO a mandatory donation isn't a donation it's a commercial transaction. I, personally, do not intend to ever participate in a commercial transaction on an enthusiast website. I understand the perceived necessity for it but it's just not what I'm about. I'll go to smokingmeatforums.com and talk about BBQ but I won't ever purchase a rub or sauce recipe. Same here. If someone posted a recipe and I tried it and said "Hot dayum that's good!" I'll gladly send a voluntary donation (which is what I did with a particular bean recipe I liked).

Hello, I've had my HTPC going for a couple years now and I'm loving it! Everything I've learned and purchased for it has come from this thread. I have a question for you guys...Hope someone can help.

I would like for my HTPC to go to 3 displays AND 3 av receivers. Right now I have 2 displays and receivers working perfectly. I am using the 2 DVI ports on my ATI 3850 for video, and both the coaxial and fiber optic onboard inputs from my motherboard for audio. Both receivers I have now will not do audio passthrough via hdmi. My next AVR will have that capability so my question is...Will this work If I buy an ATI 5750? Using one hdmi cable for audio and video to the new receiver; two DVI inputs for video, then the onboard inputs from the motherboard for audio to the other two receivers?

Among three displays one must be DisplayPort, or you have to use an *active* DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI adapter if you are going to use three simultaneously.
Thank you for your response. I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.

If I buy a 5750, I would use the two DVI inputs for two of the monitors. Then for the audio on those, I would run fiber optic and digital coaxial from my motherboard to two of the receivers...Finally I would use this *active* DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to go to the third receiver for both audio and video?

I also want to add that I am not trying to get three different feeds on these displays. I'm basically trying to clone the display to all three.

Quick question

Does cooler master geminII S fit into nMediaPC 5000B?

BTW, you are doing a terrific job and I'll send you a donation for your time and effort.

@ Renethx,

When I built my server (Chenbro SR109) I used the AMD Athlon II X2 245 with the GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H mobo. I am thinking about upgrading the CPU to a quad core and was thinking about using something like the AMD Athlon II X4 635 Propus 2.9GHz. Is there any reason you think this would cause a problem with the mobo I am using (I am also using the stock CPU fan that came with the 245) or have a suggestion for a better quad core (I am looking to move some transcoding as well as commercial cutting processes over to my WHS which is the reason I want to movie to a quad core).

I am not sure if DP-to-HDMI supports audio transmission. Usually a HD5750 card has:

- 2 x DVI
- 1 x HDMI
- 1 x DP

Connect the HDMI port to the new HDMI receiver (video+audio), one of the DVI ports to a display, the DP port+an active DP-DVI adapter
to another. You can connect two receivers to onboad audio.

Athlon II X4 is a great choice for transcoding and works fine with that mb. But the stock cooler may be a bit noisy.
