omg! do want!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bToFrYPukXk

my main worry was the ion would be too big for livingroom or kids bedrooms and if your going full size might as well go roland. but that thing is barely bigger than the normal rb set. love it!

Man, I've got a lot of songs to replay. Obviously I was pretty far off on my recollection of songs using the green pad as a tom.

Hands on with the ION kit:

Frank on the Ion drums

The drums have been my big passion in Rock Band: I always wanted to be a drummer but never had the money, time, or talent to pursue the dream. In fact, I was one of those sad folks who anticipated the game by playing along to the prerelease gameplay videos with pencils on my desk. And while I may never try to transfer to a real set, I will without a doubt shell out $300 for the Ion Drums. After only a single song, I can't see myself going back to an old set without pining for the Ion.

First of all, this set is huge and durable. This isn't just a piece of plastic. It was stressed that by adding an Alesis brain to the set, you have a high-quality electronic drum kit. The unit I was playing on was covered in wires and ties keeping the complexities tightly wrapped against the sturdy frame. The cymbals were adjusted a little low for my taste at first, but everything can be moved around: the pads can be spread out, the cymbals lifted and lowered, the pedal moved up and back at will.

While the pads felt good, the cymbals were amazing. Crashing down on the crash cymbal to end a special was amazing, even if it took a while to get used to the idea of playing both vertically and horizontally across the set. I also had some trouble with the new pedal: hits only register if your foot is right at the end of the pad: oftentimes I missed a few notes because the tip of my toe (I play heel-up) was too far from the top.

Without question, the Ion drums are a luxury that only a few will truly buy in to. But there's simply no denying the fact that the new set looked, sounded, and felt great. If you want to get the most out of drumming in Rock Band 2, you need this.

Thanks for making me drool, Jokell.

I'm really just sick of the old drums already. My drums have been broken for over a month and my RMA is nowhere in sight. I borrowed my friends drums, which have been hardly used, and gold starred seven songs on Monday, but then last night they're dropping notes on red already. So now I may need to give my friend my new drums and RMA his. I don't even hit that hard.

The red and green pads exhibit a lot of problems on these sets. It seems like a fair amount of that is the vibration due to them just hanging out to the sides. Over at Scorehero somebody's come up with a mod that's a couple of support struts that sit between the legs for the base and the outer edges of the outside pads. Apparently that helps quite a bit.

My stock kit is now not staying up at the height I set it at (the locking pieces come loose and it drops down). Getting highly annoying, because it only happens during a song.

Those ION kits can't ship fast enough for me.

You may want to call EA. I've RMA'ed my drums twice (about to the third time) and I've received the drums within a week both times.

The only thing I'm even considering out of that batch is the MIC. If it has equal or better sound quality than the stock mic, I may have to get one.

I wonder if it will fit into the clip on my mic stand, though. At least they thought to put a locking button on there...

So we know that GHWT has more unique inputs then rock band, so my question is... will the Ion kit with extra cymbals take advantage of this and map them as unique inputs or just copy em? And is anyone sure if you can just USB from the Ion kit to the PC to make them work as electric drums? If this is the case.. my god is this a buy.

First point - we won't know for sure unless someone from either camp (Activision or ION) says one way or the other or until they're both released.

Second point - since it's a standard 360 controller you should be able to hook it straight up. No reason to think otherwise at this point.

How's this for ya? http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/xbox-rock-band.html

LOS ANGELES -- Own Rock Band instruments on Xbox 360? They'll work with Guitar Hero World Tour.

At Activision's E3 press conference Tuesday, Guitar Hero director Brian Bright told the crowd that if they already owned guitar controllers and drum controllers from "previous games" on the Xbox 360, they'd work with Guitar Hero World Tour.

What Activision didn't say is how that will actually work, considering that Rock Band drums have four pad inputs and Guitar Hero World Tour has five.

UPDATE: Here's how it'll work. Speaking with Bright after the conference, I found out that the game's five-button drum track, shown above center, will be compressed down to four inputs if a Rock Band drum controller is inserted.

There's also a MIDI jack on the back of the drum kit, Bright said, which will allow gamers to play Guitar Hero with any electronic drum kit by simply plugging it into the controller. You can also hook up a second drum pedal if you want to play two bass drums

Granted, I'm making an assumption here but knowing about them condensing it down to 4 drum lanes makes me think this is a total go.

Anyone see the clip of the guys playing 'Hot For Teacher' on Guitar Hero? The drum part was insane. The opening guitar rift was pretty crazy too. Those guys were pretty damn good. Nice to see a demo with the folks playing on expert and knowing what they are doing.

I actually sort of like the portable drum set idea in that link also. One of the major things that always held me back from getting it is that I don't know where I'd store all the stuff when not playing. (Pretty much all spare storage space in my apartment is used up.) Still, I don't know if I'll get that or not, but its an intriguing idea.

I wonder if adding one of the Mad Katz cymbals to the RB2 drum kit also lets you keep all 5 notes in GH:WT. I really hope so, otherwise, no matter how much better the RB2 kit is, I'll probably get the GH:WT one, just so that I can get the full experience in both games.

actually that portable drum kit could be a great modkit starter. I mean a controller brain already seperated with leads and sensors that can be applied to any surface(actual drums maybe?)

Will it take the add-on cymbals?

Were they playing imaginary drum beats that were just inserted into the chart for the sake of difficulty?

Yeah Alec Van Halen isn't exactly known for his "incredible diversity" on the skins. Hot For Teacher is just double bass eighth-notes I think, with the occasional extra beat thrown in so it gives that "engine idling" effect...then its just straight to the 1-2-3-4 on the hi-hat and backbeat on the snare. By the way that beginning part, played on a single bass, would be tough to do with the rock band pedal..unless you had ankles and calves of steel. Those modern metal drummers could probably pull it off...me, i'd need double kicks

Go listen to the drums on 5150...they're pretty bad (part of it is that they are also terribly mixed), a really good song IMHO...but that guy needed a few more takes to get both the sound and his rhythm down. And by "bad" I mean lots of not-quite-on beats, like he's a half second off or something. Again, could be the mixing and reverb they added or something...but it still sounds whacked when you listen to it on headphones. Its one of the few songs I can think of where the drums just sounded...wrong, like I'd have said "Dude...dont drink tonight, come back tomorrow, and do it again!".

yeah I'm a bastard like that

Actually on Hot For Teacher he's playing like a shuffle on the double bass. This video has a very similar beat and explanation.

NIN 3 pack = instant buy. Hell it'd be worth it just for Last or Burn! But both of 'em, plus another song... nice.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELL YES! I can't wait for Tuesday! I still have to buy The Who pack, so it's going to be a costly day. BUT MORE NIN!! WOOOO!!!

And such good songs. I'm one of the 7 people who actually enjoy Capital G, so I'm looking forward to that one, too.

I love how Activision made their game backwards compatible with the Rockband instruments, but wouldn't let Rockband release the patch to make GH guitars work with RB. Stay classy, Activision. Oh, and go **** yourselves, too.

Hahaha. So right...

And I probably won't be getting the NIN pack. Not that big of a fan. Besides, I'm still busy with the Who songs.

I am confused, the GH 3 guitar works for me for RB? But I can only use my RB guitar with GH3? Has something changed?

Yes, Activision is allowing Rock Band instruments to work on Guitar Hero World Tour.
More NIN? Really? I will probably pick up Last. I do love me some Broken.
Man, every time Harmonix draws me in with the RB awesome, we see an announcement like this from the GH camp (it's GH: Hendrix for those that can't click through). At least I've got an era of renewed interoperability (maybe) to look forward to. Hopefully they do that one right. Hopefully this also signals a possibility of getting Hendrix into RB (he had a song covered in GH1, so at least there's some possiblity, but I worry that these artist centered titles also involve exclusive deals). If I weren't so lazy in regards to changing discs, this probably wouldn't concern me.
