16' wide screen theater w/ 20+ seats and starfield ceiling and stadium configuration

Hello All,
I wanted to start a thread in which to chronicle the construction of my dedicated theater, game room, theater lobby and A/V room.

Here are the details of each of the rooms.

Movie Theater:
24' x 30' x 12'. We worked with our architect back in 2003 when formulating the floor plans of the entire house to purposefully design it in advance so that there is stadium seating to keep people from seeing the heads of people in front. The rear rows are not risers built as afterthoughts, but rather we built out that room about a foot-and-a-half lower than the rest of the 2nd story of the house. The theater has a 12' ceiling in the front where the screen and proscenium are located, and 10' ceiling in the rear. There are 22 seats: three rows of seating with 8 theater seats in the first row, 7 in the second row, and 7 in the third row.
There will be two “money seats” in the second row. All other seats recline and the seat bottoms become upright. These seats were bought from an actual movie theater.
Each row is a little over 8" higher than the previous row.
I have 24 tactile transducers which will be mounted below each seat and row to provide an impact to all viewers.

The speakers are complete Klipsch THX ULTRA2 speakers with LCRs, two side dipolars and two rear centers. The two center rears are both upgraded from the standard rears and are the same as the LCRs.
There are two big subwoofers with two 1000 watt amplifiers for them.

I have a 2 Terabyte Home Theater PC from EPICENTER with capability of storing about 200 Standard Def DVD movies on the hard drives, all my music, and pictures which are then distributed to other rooms in my house using Microsoft Xbox360’s as Media Center Extenders. The HTPC also has HD DVD access with the capability of having HD DVD movies also stored on the hard drives. I have attached to the computer 5 Sony VAIO firewire 200-DVD changers which are daisy chained to each other to allow for an additional 1000 movies which are displayed in the interface for instant viewing. If you are interested in more information about the HTPC, please feel free to PM me.

The projector is the JVC RS1. Not much to say about it, other than how great it is. There are numerous threads in $3000+ Projector forums stating how it is a fantastic projector.

My screen was put together about half a year ago. I actually received help from one of the long-time contributors (MississippiMan) of the DIY Sceen forum, who provided advice and helped to build the screen, as well as suggesting to create the starfield.
The screen measures about 90 inches high and 16 feet wide. This gives us about a 212” diagonal 2.35:1 screen with a high-gain screen. Unfortunately, I don't know what that gain is.
When using the 16:9 aspect ratio, the screen diagonal is approximately 221".

The ceiling is a starfield with about a thousand points of fiber optic light. It has the Milky Way, a whole bunch of constellations, and two shooting stars that span the width of the ceiling. It is painted completely in flat black.

A soffit is built around the perimeter of the theater with 3” can lights, and we have columns strategically placed to hide the left, right, and surrounding speakers. The center speaker and subs are hidden in the stage and proscenium.
Two rows of crown molding are dropped 3” so that rope lighting will illuminate the side and edges of the ceiling and the walls / soffitts.

The stage has four steps up and is built with a semi-circular shape. It is sturdy enough to allow for performances, such as karaoke and Guitar Hero competitions. Beneath the stage is hollow with a large crawlspace.

The walls will be covered by a red and black brocade fabric with a continuous elegant pattern. Hidden behind will be a combination of diffusors and Linacoustic.

The Lobby has an 8oz popcorn machine maker with wheels and stand. There is a movie marquee and we will have a candy counter and ticket taker.

The A/V room contains enough cable to allow for every room in the house to have 2 CAT5E and 2 RG6, as well as in-wall and in-ceiling speakers with CAT5E for electronic volume and source controls. It feeds signal for 16 HD DVR, DVR, and On-Demand boxes. It integrates with an HAI panel for internet control of the alarm, security cameras, garden sprinkler
automation, and lighting controls using UPB. All the audio and video components will be stored on two racks with an isolated electrical panel. It will have climate control for all of the generated heat.

The Game Room is 23' x 33' x 10' in dimension. It contains a 8’x9’ wet bar with sink. Adjacent to it is a foosball table and have a 8’ pool table with a Stroh’s Beer billiard bar light. There are two 10-person oval red felt poker tables.
I’ll try to answer as completely and as frequently as possible. Feedback and advice is very welcome.

Take care,
J.

Here are a few pictures. I’ll update this thread as we progress.

Movie Theater seat that I upholstered myself as a test:

The Milky Way fiber optics start from the front left corner to the right rear corner. Constellations are placed in the relatively accurate places and the shooting stars span left to right and front corner to opposite rear corner. The strands have not been melted yet nor pushed up to be flush with the ceiling:

Very wide viewing cone. Note that even at an extreme angle, there is minimal loss of brightness:

Thanks for your interest.

Wow, What a space. I cannot wait to see how everything turns out.

I think your theater/bar/lobby is more sq/ft than my house.

Edit : yep, between the 2 rooms, thats more than my house.

Looking great! I look forward to your updates.
Wow. That is huge! Where are the speakers going relative to the screen? Are you concerned with the hollow stage resonating (maybe it is not an issue with a stage that big)?
Man I love that bar - awesome!

I love the bar too!

The speakers will be hidden inside the columns.
Here is a pic of the side of the column. Note the hinge.

The black panel parts are all acoustically-transparent speaker cover fabric so as not to affect the sound. We even put them in the soffits to maintain consistency in the appearance, as well as to create bass-traps.

I actually hadn't thought about the resonance of the stage. It is built of MDF, so hopefully that will absorb the vibration considerably.
On either side of the curved stage, just below the two front columns are spaces for the two subwoofers. There probably is concern about resonance since these THX Ultra2's are quite powerful. Now you have me thinking about the resonance of the stadium tiered flooring where the seats will be. Since we are planning on putting the transducers in the back, perhaps the flooring will rattle as well. I better try experimenting before the carpet is installed. Thanks for pointing that out mbgonzomd.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering, the windows that you see in the pics will be fully covered with the brocade material.

Here are some more pictures.

My contractor is standing on the stage in front of the screen:

Close up of the fiber optic ends coming off the ceiling. These need to be melted so that they mushroom and then can be pushed up to be flush with the ceiling surface:

More pics to come!

Wow, can't wait for more pictures. I would love to see one from the screen looking towards the rear of the room.

Holly ****! That's an amazing theater! I've just posted to comments on how many feel my 106" screen is too big from 11'. At 16', your screen is double the width of my 106" 16x9 screen which is 8' wide. If any room could take that big of a screen, it would be yours. Hopefully, this is a 2.35 screen.

Very nice theater & bar.

That is not a home theater ... IT IS GONNA BE A MOVIE HOUSE!!!!
Awsome bar and what a gaming area.. cant wait to see it as it progresses to the finish!!!
Fantastic Job!!!

Thank you for the kind words.

Ask, and you shall receive, plain fan!

This is a picture taken from the stage. Sorry for the mess, as well as the blurryness of the images. Note the risers, and how the last one is flush with the rest of the lobby and game room.

This would be the left side of the theater if you were facing the screen. I started painting the base color of the faux. It is from Kelly-Moore and is called Tropical Straw. I paint both columns and soffits with this color, and then I will faux paint the special burgundy red mixed with glaze on top of the Tropical Straw to give it dimension and depth. It will require about 5 light coats of paint.

Here is a little bit of the burgundy red faux painted on the columns. Think "Cheesecake Factory"!

The brocade fabric will be installed underneath the soffits and between the columns, covering the windows. The double crown molding, door trim, and baseboard will be painted a glittery antique gold foil similar to the grape leaves and handrail on my staircase:

Here is a better pic of the gold in the daylight. Also note the faux paint for the beige soffits next to the sky ceiling of my living room. You can see how much more depth and visual interest it adds next to the solid color soffit adjacent to it. This will be somewhat similar in pattern to what I am painting the columns and soffits, except for the burgundy color.

Thanks for tuning in!

Can you elaborate on the screen more?

Do you have any links detailing the build process, or any keywords that will help in a forum search?

The screen looks plenty bright in your pictures, is it as bright in person?

Thanks, James

Very impressive house! Reminds me of some of the casinos in vegas (in a good way , with the attention to details). The poker tables help create the feel also! I'm interested in more house pictures if you have any. Also, you may want to shrink some of the big pictures so your thread is easier to read (so one doesn't have to scroll right and left).

I love the finish of your theater. I have a similar sized room and also use a 2.40 screen that is just over 16ft wide. My problem is that we got the room finished to a point, started using it and now it is hard to go in there and NOT watch a movie so we don't get much work done on it lately. We had the benefit of having an indoor pool that seldom got used so we did what any movie buff would do. We drained the pool, built up a stadium style room, projection booth and spent way more than we should have on equipment! I have to say it is well worth it. My only regret now is that we are needing to finish the detail work but no one wants to do it I have a few pics in the members section. Of course some things have changed since the original posts so below the link, I have a pretty updated list of gear.

Hi James,
I will use this thread to provide you some info about the screen. Here is a link which describes the build:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=854134

In case the link gets broken in the future, here is the location:
AVS Forum > Display Devices > 2.35:1 Constant Image Height Chat > DIY Constant Height > The Really BIG Picture Show

I think the screen is bright in person. I would say it is as enjoyable to my eyes as the local IMAX theater in terms of brightness.

Calbear,
That will be a very nice home theater. Did you do all the planning yourself or are you working with a local dealer/installer/designer?

Hello mbgonzomd,
Thanks you for your compliments.

I will try to shrink the bigger pictures to make them more acceptable. I suppose 800x600 will do.

Here are some more pictures of my house...

The home is located on a corner lot. Photo of the front and part of the side facing south:

Photo taken from the side:

6-1/2 car garage. 1/2 car is for golf cart if you want to drive to the golf course located in the community:

Back of the house:

Upstairs sitting room:

Part of kitchen where 60" Wolf double oven is situated:

Double-sided fireplace in room:

1600+ bottle wine cellar:

I should say that it may take a little time to respond back, as we have a newborn daughter to take care of. I am also finding that editing photos takes much more time than expected.

Hello TSHA222,

What a fantastic project!
I think we are along the same lines of thinking.
Talk about a great list of equipment! I'm sure your photos don't do it justice.

Take care,
J.

Hello Grady,
I did the rough planning of the theater. I worked with my architect to tweak the details. As you can see in the thread I linked in a previous post, MississippiMan was an integral part of the screen build, the starfield ceiling, and the transducers. My contractor, Juan Carlos, provided good suggestions during the build, so the decisions were kind of on-the-fly.
Acoustic considerations for absorption and dispersion were suggested from a friend of mine in Boston who is in the business. Otherwise, everything was done by me and of course the tremendous resources here at AVSForum. I've been lurking here since 2003, before I broke ground... back when I was still in the design stage of the entire house. At the time, and up until now, I didn't feel I could contribute anything worthwhile and hence my low post count. However, I feel there is no better source of information on the planet for all things A/V.

Hi RobZ,
LOL. Each time my friends and family come over, they let me know that they enjoy spending time here.

Hi grigsby,
That's funny. There sure is a lot of tile up there.

Hi swamdog,
Yes, it is a Cayenne in the background. The other cars are in the garage. Here is a pic of my daily-driver:
