Any Battlestar S1 reviews? - Page 5

It was 4 episodes. So I'm guessing 4 'TV hours'. Maybe they added some deleted scenes so it could be 4 hours.

The biggest issue I have with the US theme was that the UK theme was the original theme, but the US theme was inserted in Season 1 for american audiences in fear they "wouldn't get it."

So basically the UK theme is the real theme, and the US theme is the dumbed-down version. That's what irks me, and enough people complained and now the US version uses the "real theme."

Whenever I hear that people don't like the "Real theme" my first thought is that they might be naive of its significance. Guess that doesn't apply to you, sorry.

I mean, how many shows out there that are dramas, sci-fi dramas, make allusions to Hinduism, Mormonism, Christianity, and Islam?

This is seriously the best BSG release I've seen to date. The grain is dialed up as always and in some scenes in the Mini-series, it's somewhat unpleasant but otherwise, this is the best I've ever seen the BSG video.

LexInVA.. I know this may be a hassle - but would it be possible to post a picture of HDDVD BSG (via digital camera) on your HDTV?

How is the sound quality?

So was there a review on it or not? lol.

PLEASE it is urgent for me to know this. on the back cover says that it is subtitles in english, french, and SPANISH.

Universal droped this month ago, can anyone confirm that indeed it is subtitled? cuz A LOT of fans in Spain want to import it!!!!

Score-Picked up S1 and Razor today at BB. First store wouldnt price match Targets price, so I went to another and they did it without problem. What was amazing is that BB wants $99.99 versus printing out Targets online listing of $69.99 or a 30% reduction! This trick works like a charm 95% of the time. I only had one other occasion where they wouldnt do it. Once they see the big red Target logo on the printout, they price match without hesitation, even though many times Target doesnt carry in store these titles. But it is in their computer and thats all the BB drones know, so it works.

I'm gonna watch Razor tonight and the mini-series/pilot this weekend again. (Havent seen the pilot for over a year)

I would say that if the box says it has Spanish subtitles, it has Spanish subtitles.

Otherwise I suppose those Spaniards are going to need to learn some English.

well I don't mind the subs at all, but a lot of people here need them cuz they won't learn english just like that for a show, and also Universal Spain hasn't published anything for 2 months now and wont be doing it so untill Bourne on January 30th!!! so people just DON'T wanna wait (things get a HUGE delay here, take for example Matrix, just got released TODAY here in Spain)

I don't have a surround sound setup in my bedroom and I'm using the 360 add-on connected to my older 720p LCD projection TV (yes I know it's old but I have had it for ages and not used the HD functionality until recently) so you wouldn't be able to see much that would give you an exact idea of quality. I do however have a 60-inch SXRD Sony 1080P display in the other room that I can move it to if you really want me to give you an up close and personal evaluation of the video. That being said, for the setup I am currently using, the audio sounds pretty damn good. This set has me salivating for the next two seasons and I know their HD release depends on sales of this set. I haven't reached a seriously action packed episode yet but I'll take a close look at The Hand of God shortly and I believe that one will set the benchmark for this first season HD release in terms of A/V quality.

LexInVA maybe you can answer me if the show actually brings the spanish subs that are stated on the back cover??? if not you anyone who has it please!!!

Imeldhil, sorry, but there are only French and English SDH. I got disc 1 from Netflix today, and that's all there is.

Thanks for elaborating. I get it. What's interesting is they went ahead with it from Season 2 on, and most people prefer the "real" theme, so Americans must not be so dumb after all. 'Cept for me, that is.

The first time I read the translation of the prayer, I developed more of an appreciation for that version. Still like my dirge, though.

Aaaanyway.... I wish someone would post a professional review of this set! I'm supposed to get it for Christmas, but it would be great to have a nice in-depth review to whet my appetite.

I'm about 1 hour into the 1st disc, and I'm quite impressed.

Sure, there's a ton of grain in a lot of scenes (50% or so), but it's intentional and works well imo. There's plenty of scenes that are nice and crisp. I also get the sense that the audio quality somewhat follows the video in certain scenes.

My video path is: A35(24p) -> Onkyo 885 -> Pearl

For audio I run TrueHD bitstream into my Onkyo pre/pro to my amps & speakers. Certain space scenes pack a good LFE punch for sure, and most "regular/indoor scenes" are quite precise in the TrueHD soundtrack.

Keep in mind that this is just one hour in. I suspect the production for the actual season one is going to be even better!

My only gripe is the terrible packaging. Soft rubber center supports on a 6 panel paper flipper. wtf? I wish the regular red plastic containers had been made mandatory in the HD-DVD spec.

Good lord. I don't know what's worse. The Star Trek packaging or the Battlestar packaging. Those rubber center supports frakking suck!

Battlestar is worse. I didn't think it would happen this soon, but it did...

I feel bad for Amazon Prime members. I preordered my S1 HD DVDs with the free 'super saver' shipping, and received them today.

I went to Fry's today and grabbed Razor, too, since I missed it on SciFi. I know I'm going to kick myself when I double dip when it comes out on HD DVD.

I second that. The packaging is too theme-ish and not really practical.

But... the packaging doesn't have corners! Doesn't that make it slightly awesome?

For fans of the show that get it yes it was a nice little addition. There will ALWAYS be people to complain about something though. The companies cant satisfy everyone 100%.

I think the case is kinda cool, but I can tell just after taking it out of the sleeve a few times, the cardboard corners will get worn doing that. I really wish they would test-run these things a bit more. Oh well, if that's what it takes to get the stellar content, I'm all for it!

Back to watching BSG is glorious HD!

Yeah, well, they need to tell whoever is putting the discs on the rubber nubs NOT to rotate them when they put them on because there is nothing keeping the discs from contacting the cardboard. [EDIT: OK, there is a small lip at the base of the rubber nub, but it's barely there, certainly not enough to offset the flexing which is obviously going on when they're being put on at the factory.] Radial scratches are one thing. Tangential scratches fracking suck. A straight digipack or thinpack would have been a lot better than this (I guess a custom cut-corner digipack would have been too costly). And I HATE having to flex the disk so much every time I want to remove it. I may just buy some proper cases for this set.

As annoying as the ST: TOS S1 packaging was, at least it wasn't as bad as this.

Five of the six discs on my set had the tangential scratches you described, but mine are so deep I have a hard time believing that they are the result of the disc meeting the cardboard. It seems more like a manufacturing problem to me.

I just finished watching the first disc on my A35 in 1080/24 on my XBR 4 bitstreaming True HD to my onkyo 705. I was surprised that it didn't skip at 24p b/c alot of shows aren't filmed at that speed, unless i am crazy BSG is filmed at 24p. Let me start by saying that i have never seen the show before but decided to pick it up based on all the hype by friends and you guys on AVS. I think i started hearing about BSG a couple years ago but i never start watching a show on broadcast when i suspect i may like it B/C i want to start from the begining and prefer hard media.

Well after an hour and a half i am definitly hooked. What a great and interesting story. I can't wait to get back to watching. I think people have made to much a deal about the grain. I realize some people want all there HDM looking like planet earth, but i find the grain really adds to the auhtenticity and mood of the show. I also thought 300 looked great. People need to judge HDM based on how well it present the directors original intention not on how clear and sharp the picture is. BSG looks great in HD not to mention tricia Helfer.

THe sound quality is good and i would never critize a studio offering a high rexz track, all HDM should have lossless audio IMHO, but it definitly isn't Batman Begins or 300. I just don't think the show has the type of production that can afford the sound design of top hollywood blockbusters. Don't get me wrong, BSG sounds really good, it just isn't the best AQ i have heard. Surrounds are definitly effective, especially in the space battle scenes, it just doesn't have that sustained surround ambiance you hear in the best HD DVD has to offer. The above is not a complaint, just an observation. The HD presentation of BSG is really impressive, and the pip is really cool and informative from the couple of U-control scenes i watched. Overall i am estatic i picked up this great series, i am also really happy that i waited for the full HD experience before i got addicted to BSG.
